매일 반려견이 여러분에게 전해주는 가르침에 마음을 열어두세요. 특히 반려견을 훈련할 때, 반려견은 여러분에게 피드백을 주고 있습니다. 반려견은 현재 상황에 대한 자신의 감정을 공유하고 있는 것이죠. 그 피드백을 수용하고 조정해 보세요. 왜냐하면 그렇게 할 때마다 여러분과 반려견은 점점 더 가까워지기 때문입니다. 그 유대감은 점점 더 실질적인 것이 되어갑니다. 따라서 반려견이 공유하는 가르침에 마음을 여는 것은 여러분이 반려견에게 필요한 것이 무엇인지 알게 된다는 것을 의미합니다. 예를 들어, 반려견이 집에서 혼자 차분하게 쉬는 법에 대해 더 집중적인 훈련이 필요하거나, 항상 여러분과 접촉하거나 앞발로 만질 필요가 없다는 것을 깨달아야 할 때를 알게 되겠죠. 또는 훈련 시 강화물(reinforcement)의 위치나 강화 비율에 대해 피드백을 줄 수도 있습니다. 여러분이 가르치려는 것을 반려견이 이해하지 못했을 때 말이죠. 결국 반려견은 여러분이 훈련 세션에서 설정한 선행 조건(antecedents)에 대한 가장 좋은 비평가입니다. 그러니 반려견의 반응을 잘 관찰해 보세요.
Be open to the lessons your dog is sharing with you every single day. When you're training your dog in particular, your dog is giving you feedback. They're sharing with you their feelings on what's going on. Take that feedback on board and make adjustments. Because every time you do that, you're bringing yourself and your dog closer and closer and closer. That bond is getting more and more real. So, being open to the lessons that your dog is sharing means that you're going to know when your dog maybe needs more focus from you on how to chill and relax alone at home and not need to be touching or pawing you all the time. Or they maybe are going to give you feedback on placement of your reinforcement when you were training or the rate of your reinforcement that they just didn't understand what you were trying to teach. And they ultimately are the best critique of the antecedents that you've arranged in your training sessions.
