절대로 해서는 안 될 일은 여러분의 반려견을 다른 반려견 훈련사나 워크숍을 진행하는 사람, 혹은 수의사에게 맡겨서 해결하게 하는 것입니다. 설령 그게 수잔 개릿(Susan Garrett)이 '저에게 반려견을 맡겨보세요'라고 말하는 상황이라도 말이죠. 반려견을 맡기기 전에 다음 질문들을 던져보세요. 무엇을 얻고자 하시나요? 저에게 직접 설명해주셔서 저도 같은 결과를 얻을 수 있다고 생각하지 않으시는 특별한 이유가 있나요? 그리고 제가 반려견을 맡겼을 때 반려견에게 일어날 수 있는 최악의 상황은 무엇인가요? 만약 그들이 음, 반려견이 저를 물려고 하면 저는 몇 번 발을 걷어차거나 알파 롤(alpha roll)을 해서 누가 우두머리인지 알려줄 겁니다라고 말한다면, 그런 일은 일어나지 않을 가능성이 높습니다. 하지만 여러분이 해야 할 일은 반려견이 100% 성공할 수 있는 환경을 만들어 주는 것입니다. 여러분은 반려견에게 자신감을 심어주는 경험이 될 것이라는 확신이 들지 않는다면 반려견을 맡겨서는 안 됩니다. 최소한 다음번에 다시 그 사람이나 환경을 마주했을 때 반려견이 두려움을 느끼지 않게 할 수 있는 일이어야 합니다. 그게 아니라면 말이죠. 당신은
What you don't want to do is you don't want to hand your dog over to another dog trainer or somebody giving a workshop or even a veterinarian to deal with. Even if it's Susan Garrett saying, let me take your dog. Before you give me your dog, ask these questions. What are you hoping to achieve? Is there some reason you don't think you can talk me through that and get the same results? And what is the worst case scenario that could happen to my dog by me handing them? Now, if they say, well, your dog goes to bite me. I'm going to like, you know, pop them off his feet a few times and I'm going to alpha roll them and tell them who's boss. Chances are that's not going to happen. But what you want to do is make sure you set the dog up for a hundred percent success. You are not going to hand your dog over unless you know it will be a confidence building experience for your dog or at the least something that is not going to make them fearful of that person or this environment the next time that they come around.
