Vacation time is upon us. What time is that? Well, of course, any time, right? But here in Canada, we are heading into the summer. And so, some of you may be thinking of taking a vacation in the car with your dog. So, I thought I would share with you not only my own personal packing list, but what things I think you need to consider as far as traveling with your dog. So, let's get into it. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shaped by Dog. Today, I'm going to talk about your plan, how to prepare your dog, and what to pack on your trip. I'm also going to touch on safety, where you should be stopping and where you should be staying. So, let's jump into it and start talking about the plan. The plan needs to involve like how much time do you have? How long do you want to stay away? And if you're traveling with your dog, you want to make all parts of it enjoyable for the dog. So, let's say you're planning to go vacation someplace that's a 15 or 20 hour drive away. You don't want to say, well, let's get in the car and let's drive eight hours one day and seven hours the accident and let's get there. If you've got a dog or dogs in the car, consider their experience over that two-day trip. You want to break it up as much as you can. So, plan to not travel as much as you may have if you were by yourself. Plan to add in at least two hours into every day, an hour for lunch and two 30-minute stops somewhere in the morning or in the afternoon. That way, your dog's going to look forward to getting into the car every time you say, let's load up the next day of traveling. If you make this an unpleasurable experience, you're going to find your dogs are going to start getting resistant about getting in the car with you. So, the plan could be, where do you want to go? And what do you want to do when you get there? I would strongly encourage not to think about theme park vacations when you're traveling with the dog. Yes, most of them would have a kenneling area you can leave your dogs at for the day. But really, is that a fun vacation for your dog? When you're thinking of vacationing or when I'm thinking of vacationing with a dog, I would think of someplace with a beach or a river, someplace on a lake. I like to think of a place that's got some trails for hiking. It's your vacation. So, what makes it sound fun to you? You know, renting a place by the ocean might be amazing, but think in terms of what will your days be filled with when you are there on vacation. If the days are going to be filled with you going out for 12 hours sightseeing, maybe your dog vacation isn't the right one for this time

around. Dog vacations mean this is going to be a fun time for you. It's not just like, I don't want to pay for a pet sitter, so you're coming, pal. Right? So, dog vacation, let's make it something that will be memorable for you. I remember when I took my dog on that vacation, it was so much fun. Okay. So, for your plan, that's your travel plan, where you're going to stay and what you're going to do when you get there. All right. Now let's talk preparing. There are things that I strongly encourage you to do with your dog to prepare them for this trip. First of all, how's your dog going to be traveling? Will they be traveling in a crate or will you have to use a seatbelt? Now, my first preference always is to put your dog in a crate. I personally love traveling with my dogs in a gunner crate, but I recognize those are big crates for a lot of people's cars. So, there are other crates that are suitable like the rough, tough crates. They're another great crates. Plus, you can get those in pretty colors. But you might have a small car, Susan, I don't have room to pack my stuff and have a crate for my dog. Okay. So, there are a couple of seatbelts that I would recommend. They do crash tests on seatbelts. There's a safety testing center for dogs. I'll put a link in the show notes. But actually the seatbelt that I would go with would be the rough, tough load up. The company's done their own testing on the harness. Now, if you want one that is specifically passed all the testing from the dog safety site, then that would be the SleepyPod ClickIt. Now, the reviews are mixed on those. I've used the rough wear. And so, that's the one that I would suggest. But at the end of the day, I wouldn't be putting my dog in a seatbelt. I love the safety and security of my dogs being in a crate. Bottom line, we want our dogs to be safe, but we want them to be comfortable. Please just don't go to a big box store and take a harness off the shelf because they say it is safe. Do your due diligence and make sure you are getting one that your dog will be safe in the event you do have a little bit of a fender bender. No one who listens to this podcast is going to have a fender bender. Really, I'm sure of it. Okay. So, we've made the decision. If you've said, yes, I will be crating my dog when I travel, let's warm up some crate games. So, start playing crate games regularly with your dog and start crating your dog during the day. Now, that may be something you're already doing. Maybe you crate your dog at night. But if your dogs are like my dogs, once they're adults, I don't put them in the crate that often.

So, I would prepare by putting them say two hours a day, they're going to stay in their crate, which prepares them for the length of time that they're going to have to be in a crate when we're traveling. It could be two hours when you're not home, but I would always put in some time when you are home because your dog's going to see you in the same room, aka the car, and they're going to wonder why they're in this crate. And so, they may get fussy if you're not get, if they haven't been used to being in a crate in the same room and you're not entertaining them or taking them out of that crate. So, number one, crating. Get your dog used to being crated more. If you are going to be staying in a hotel or a place you're going to use a soft-sided crate, then you want to make sure you build up and understand that your dog's not going to destroy that soft-sided crate because it happens a lot. So, test out at the soft-sided crate and make sure your dog is comfortable and won't try to rip their way out of that soft-sided crate. Next thing I would recommend is start playing games. Now, if you are a member of our Recallers program, make a list of the Recallers games that you're going to do when you are on the road with your dog or when you're on vacation to make it an enriching and engaging experience for them. If you are not a member of our Recallers or Homeschool the Dog program, I'll put a link in the show notes to several videos that I've got on YouTube where you can learn to play games. And these are just things that you get to the hotel and you're tired. You want to just, you know, have an adult beverage and relax. But your dog's like, I've been in a crate all day. Let's do something. Well, you can play a few little games and then I'll mention some enrichment things you can do. They can do alone. So, we've got our dog crated. We've got some games that we know that we can play. Next, it's your choice. So, very important. You're going out to a strange area. You might be walking your dog at a park you don't know. You want to play it's your choice and grow it's your choice to include surprise things found in the grass. I know of three people personally who when they're out hiking or they're at a park, their dog ate a stash of marijuana. So, if your dog has really good it's your choice, they may alert you to look what's here, mom, but they're not going to devour it. All right. So, put in a few rounds of it's your choice in your enriching games that you're playing with your dog. Of course, you're going to want to make sure that your dog doesn't get car sick in the car. So,

take them on some short little day trips around the city right now. And here is my final preparation. And you are going to thank me for this one. Make sure your dog will pee and poop on a leash. Yeah, you're welcome. Because otherwise you're going to be one of those people walking up and down that little strip of grass outside of a hotel going, come on, buddy, please go to the bathroom. But if your dog is used to only doing their business out in your yard or out on a walk in the forest, they're not going to want to do it on leash. So, level one, number one would be get them to be comfortable going to the bathroom on leash. Level number two would be put it on cue. So, I have both elements on cue. So, if I want my dog to pee, I say go potty. And if I would like them to poop because I think they're due and I want to put them in the car for a couple hour drive, then my cue that I use is get busy. Now, it's not the cue that makes it happening, guys. It is the conditioning. So, I'll put a link to podcast episode number 48 where you can get that information on how to condition your dog to potty on leash. So, that is the preparation for the dog. Also, if you've never done any enrichment games with your dog, I would do it beforehand so it's not something new and novel. So, puppy puzzle games or putting things in stuffed toilet paper rolls or snuffle mat or things like that, that your dog can have fun alone when you are relaxing with that adult beverage, right? Next up, what to pack. Now, I will put a link to my personal packing list. A couple of things to be aware of. This packing list includes things that I'm going to bring if I'm going to an agility trial that requires me driving in a car versus getting on a plane. So, the first thing you might do is get a marker and scratch off the things that you aren't going to be needing on that list. That's what I do every time I print out this list for a trip. I go, okay, well, I won't be needing this, this, or this. You're going to look at this list and go, OMG, I could never travel with Susan Garrett. She brings everything in the kitchen sink. And you'd be right. I do. I bring a lot of things. And so, I actually have a big tote container on wheels and a handle is a big plastic container with snaps on the lid. And I take that into the hotels that I'm staying in. And in that tote, there'll be things like my blender. Of course, I'm not traveling without my blender. I bring a single burner hot plate, French press, of course, a bowl, a little pot to cook in. So, there's things on this,

구급상자 같은 건 당연히 필수 품목이고요. 저는 물건들을 카테고리별로 분류해 둡니다. 만약 RV를 타고 여행한다면, 반려견과 여행할 계획이라면 고려해 볼 만한 부분이죠. 냉장고에 넣을 것, 냉동고에 넣을 것들을 구분해서 챙길 거예요. 또한, 저는 쿨라트론(Coolatron)을 가지고 여행하는 걸 정말 좋아해요. 이건 바퀴가 달려있고 전원에 연결할 수 있는 쿨러거든요. 그럼 이제 제가 무엇을 가지고 다니는지 아시겠죠? 이제 여러분만의 짐 꾸리기 목록을 만들어 보세요. 차에 있는 시가잭 라이터요. 요즘 아무도 담배 피우는 데 쓰지 않는데도 여전히 시가잭 라이터라고 부르나요? 아닌 것 같네요. 제 나이가 드러나네요. 어쨌든 그건 차에 있는 작은 소켓에 꽂아서 쓰는데, 항상 아이스팩에 의존하지 않아도 되니까 정말 대단하죠. 저는 항상 하나씩 가지고 다녀요. 또 다른 작은 쿨러도 하나 있어서 거기에 냉동 반려견 사료를 하나 넣고 제 음식은 다른 쿨러에 넣어요. 그래서 쿨라트론에 넣을 물건과 쿨러에 넣을 물건을 따로 챙겨요. 그리고 어디를 가든 항상 가지고 다니는 건조 사료 목록도 있죠. 제가 이렇게 여행할 때 반려견 훈련 가방에는 무엇이 들어있을까요? 당연히 우비죠. 항상, 우비를 챙기는 건 언제나 중요해요. 왜냐하면 우비를 챙기지 않아서 비를 맞기 싫다는 이유로 반려견이 밖에서 냄새를 맡거나 용변을 보려고 할 때 반려견을 재촉하고 싶지는 않을 테니까요. 네, 맞아요. 그 외에 잡다한 물건들도 있어요. 이것들은 중요해요. 저는 망사 형태의 반사 소재로 된 그늘막을 가지고 있어요. 이건 제가 투자한 그늘막 중에서 최고예요. 쇼 노트에 링크를 남겨둘게요. 저는 이 그늘막을 정말 좋아해요. 차 뒤에 있는 반려견이나 크레이트에 있는 반려견을 위해 씌워줄 때 꼭 필요하실 거예요. 좋아요. 만약 안전벨트를 하고 있다면, 그늘막으로 반려견을 감싸지는 마세요. 하지만 많은 반려견이 과도하게 더위를 느끼기 때문에 창문에 하나 걸어두는 것은 좋을 수 있어요. 실제로 수의사분들로부터 공기 순환이 잘 안 되는 차 뒷좌석에서 너무 오랜 시간 햇볕이 한쪽 창문으로 내리쬐어 반려견이 열사병으로 죽은 사례가 있다는 이야기를 들은 적이 있어요. 좋아요. 그럼 그 그늘막 링크를 올려놓을게요. 그리고 료비 팬도요. 다른 팬들도 분명 있겠지만 료비 팬은 반려견 크레이트 앞이나 반려견 크레이트가 있는 뒷좌석의 공기를 순환시킬 때 사용하기 정말 좋아요. 추가된 텍스트입니다. 추가된 텍스트입니다. 이 두 가지는 여행할 때 정말 중요하다고 생각하는 아주 큰 부분입니다. 그래서,
on my packing list that you're going to go, oh, heck no, I'm not bringing that along. So, I'm just giving you the big picture view. There may be things that you have on your list that I'm missing for mine, and I would like to know them. Please let me know them. So, things like a first aid kit, that's a non-negotiable, of course. And I have things that I put in categories. So, if I'm traveling in an RV, which if you're taking a trip with your dog, you might want to consider that. I'll have items that go in the fridge, items that go in the freezer. Also, I love to travel with a Coolatron, and that is a cooler that has wheels that plugs into the cigarette lighter in the car. Do they still call them cigarette lighters when nobody actually uses them for cigarettes? I don't think so. Showing my age. But they plug into the little outlet in the car, which is amazing because then you don't have to rely on having ice packs all the time. I have one of those with me at all times. I also have another little cooler where I'll put the frozen dog food in one and I'll put my own food in another. So, I have items that go into the Coolatron, items that go into the cooler. And then I have a list of dry food products that I will bring everywhere I go. And what's in my dog training bag when I'm taking these trips? Of course, rain gear. Always, always important to bring rain gear because you don't want to rush your dog when they're out sniffing around, wanting to go to the bathroom just because you don't want to be out in the rain because you didn't bring rain gear. All right. I also have miscellaneous things. Now, these are important. I have these shade screens that are mesh and reflective. They are the best investment in shade cloth ever. I'll put a link in the show notes. I love these shade cloths. You will need them to put over your dog at the back of your car or if they're in a crate. All right. If they are in a seatbelt, please don't wrap them in a shade cloth, but you may want to hang one over the window because a lot of dogs get excessively hot. I've actually had veterinarians tell me that dogs have died of heat stroke when they're in the back of a car where the airflow isn't great and the sun is beating in on one window for an excessively long time. All right. So, I'm going to put a link to those shade claws. Also the Roby fans. Now I'm sure there's other fans, but the Roby fans that you can put in front of your dog's crates or just to get air circulating in the back where the dog crates are. 제가 챙겨갈까 고려하는 정말 말도 안 되게 거창한 것들이 많이 있는데요, 어쨌든 제 목록에 있는 것들이고, 저와 함께 여행하신다면 아마 제가 그것들을 가져갈 겁니다. 자, 짐 싸기는 여기까지입니다. 물론 반려견 사료도 챙겨야 하겠죠. 저처럼 생식을 먹이는데 카누 여행을 가거나 숲속으로 들어가는 곳으로 여행을 간다면, 반려견의 식단을 생식에서 동결건조 생식으로 바꾸시는 것을 강력히 추천합니다. 그렇게 하면 매우 가벼워지니까요. 사실 숲속으로 반려견을 위한 생식 25파운드를 짊어지고 들어갈 수는 없잖아요. 그렇게 되면 여행하는 동안 신선하게 유지하기 위해 또 25파운드의 얼음을 챙겨야 하니까요. 그러니 반려견의 식단을 동결건조 생식으로 바꾸세요. 사료를 먹이시는 분들은 그대로 하시면 됩니다. 그냥 사료를 챙겨가면 되니까요. 좋아요. 제가 챙기는 짐에 대한 이야기는 여기까지입니다. 이제 안전에 대해 이야기해 보죠. 제가 언급했듯이, 반려견과 여행할 때 켄넬을 사용하시나요? 아니면 안전벨트를 사용하시나요? 이건 정말 중요합니다. 또한 잠시 멈출 때도 고려해야 합니다. 차량 통행이 많은 곳에서 반려견의 배변을 위해 잠시 내려줄 때 말이죠. 추천하고 싶지는 않지만, 어쩔 수 없이 반려견이 갑자기 볼일을 봐야 할 때가 있잖아요. 반려견이 교통량이나 사람들을 조금 불안해하는지 확실하지 않다면 하네스와 리드줄을 착용시키는 게 좋습니다. 반려견이 목줄에서 빠져나와 나쁜 일이 생기는 걸 원치 않으니까요. 그러니 반려견과 여행할 때는 이런 점들을 생각하세요. 자, 이제 이동 중에 어디에서 멈출지에 대해 이야기해 보죠. 저는 아침에 30분, 그리고 30분 정도 정차할 계획을 세우는 것을 추천합니다. 오후에 30분이나 45분 정도, 점심 휴식으로 원하는 만큼 시간을 들여서 멋진 피크닉을 즐기며 멈춰 가세요. 당신과 반려견이 함께 휴식을 취할 수 있는 점심시간, 정말 멋지지 않나요? 제 생각에는, 반려견과 함께하는 휴가라면 정말 환상적인 여행 방식이 될 것 같아요. 그래서 제가 사는 지역에는, 북미 전역에서 이런 서비스를 볼 수 있었어요. 세계 다른 곳에서는 어떨지 모르겠지만, 앞으로 더 인기를 끌 거라고 확신해요. there's a lot of things that are ridiculously crazy that I would consider putting, taking with me, but they're on my list and yeah, chances are if you're traveling with me, I'd be bringing them. So, that's the packing. Of course, there's going to be your dog's food. So, if you're like me and you feed raw and you're going someplace where you're maybe going on a canoe trip and you're going to go into the woods, I'd strongly recommend you change your dog from a raw meal to a dehydrated raw meal. And so, that it's super light because let's face it, you're not going to be trekking back into the bush with 25 pounds of raw food for your dog. Because then you'll have to have 25 pounds of ice to keep it fresh for the time you're away. So, transition your dogs to a dehydrated raw. Those of you who are feeding kibble, as you were, because you can just take your kibble along with you. All right. So, that's the things that I've packed. Now let's talk about safety. I mentioned, do you travel with your dog in a crate? Do you travel with your dog in a seatbelt? That's super important. Also, you need to consider when you're stopping, if you're taking your dog out for a potty break where there's a lot of traffic, not one I'd recommend, but if, you know, sometimes they go like, I got to go now. You've got to get them out. I would have them on a harness and a leash if you're not sure if they're a little bit worried about the traffic or about people. We don't want them to slip out of their collar and something bad happens. So, think about those things when you are, when you're traveling with your dog. Now, okay. Now let's talk about where you stop along the way. I recommend you plan in a 30-minute stop in the morning and a 30-minute stop in the afternoon and a 30, 45 hour, depends on what you want for a lunch break, a nice picnic lunch where you can relax and your dog can relax. Wouldn't that be great? I think that would sound, that would be an amazing way to travel for a vacation with your dog. And so, there in my area, and I noticed it's throughout North America. I'm not sure where else in the world this is, but I bet you it will grow in population. There is a site called sniffspot.com. And it gives you areas that you could rent for 30 minutes at a time where it could be somebody's backyard that's completely fenced in, that they're putting on sniff spot. It's like Airbnb, but places that you can take your dog to exercise them. So, that you could say, I want something bigger than an acre. I want something that's got a hiking trail. I want something that's got a place for my dog to swim.

Sniffspot.com 말이에요. 그래서, 저와 반려견에게 흥미로워 보이는 Sniffspot을 중심으로 여행 경로를 계획할 것 같아요. 이제 도로 위를 여행할 때, 여러분은 무엇을 먹을 것인가 하는 문제가 남죠. 물론 식당에 들어갈 수도 있겠지만, 저는 반려견을 차에 두고 식당에 가는 걸 별로 좋아하지 않아요. 날씨가 더운 날에는 절대 그런 생각조차 하지 마시길 권해드려요. 저는 항상 직접 식사를 싸 가지고 다녀요. 보통은 그렇게 하죠. 아니, 누구를 속이겠어요? 누군가 저를 위해 도시락을 싸 주겠죠. 아니면 미국에서 Chipotle처럼 테이크아웃이 가능한 곳에 들러서 건강하고 빠르게 음식을 산 다음, 반려견과 함께 소풍을 즐기며 먹는 걸 가장 좋아해요. 정말 최고죠. 만약 지도를 살펴봤는데 여행하시는 지역에 Sniffspot이 아직 없다면, 그다음으로 좋은 대안은 자연 보호 구역이나 주립 공원을 찾아보는 거예요. 공원이나 고속도로에서 멀리 떨어진 잔디밭이 많은 곳이요. 만약 여행 중이라면, 낮 시간에는 야구장에 가도 돼요. 낮에는 아무도 없을 테니까요. 물론 어디를 가든 당연한 이야기지만, 반려견의 배설물은 꼭 치워야 한다는 점 잊지 마세요. 하지만 가급적이면 주유소에서 개를 내리지 않는 것이 좋습니다. 네, 저도 그렇게 하고, 해본 적도 있어요. 하지만 그럴 때는 뒤쪽에 넓은 잔디밭이 있는 휴게소 구역을 찾으려고 해요. 대부분 뒤쪽에 피크닉 테이블도 갖춰져 있거든요. 첫 번째 선택지는 아니죠. 요즘이라면 스니프스팟(Sniffspot)을 먼저 찾겠지만, 어쨌든 강아지에게 안전하고 흥미로운 장소를 찾아보세요. 강아지도 고속도로 옆에서 느긋하게 냄새를 맡고 싶어 하진 않을 테니까요, 그렇죠? 여러분도 원치 않으실 거고요. 그리고 이건 제가 유일하게 노령견이나 강아지에게 플렉시 리드줄을 사용하는 경우인데요. 왜냐하면 이 아이들은 느슨한 리드줄을 유지하며 이동하는 법을 잘 모르기 때문이에요. 물론 노령견은 알 수도 있지만, 귀가 잘 안 들릴 수도 있으니 플렉시를 사용해 안전을 확보하면서 자유롭게 탐색할 기회를 주는 거죠. 저는 자동 리드줄을 좋아하지 않지만, 이럴 때만큼은 사용합니다. 좋아요. 이제 어디서 머물지에 대해 이야기해 봅시다. 여행 중이고 그 지역에 아는 사람이 없으니 호텔에 묵어야겠다고 생각할 수 있지만, 꼭 그렇지만은 않습니다. 호텔은 마지막 순서로 미뤄두고요. 제 첫 번째 선택은 항상 에어비앤비입니다. 옵션에서 '반려동물 동반 여행'을 클릭하기만 하면 되거든요. 반려견 동반 불가라고 되어 있어도,
You can even say, I want something that's got agility equipment. Sniffspot.com. So, I would plan my stops around where I can go to sniff spots that look interesting to me and my dog. This is where when you're saying, okay, I'm going to travel on the road, what are you going to eat yourself? Now, yes, you could go into a restaurant. I'm not a fan of doing that and leaving my dogs in the car. And I encourage you, please don't even consider it if it's hot out. I always either pack my own meals. That's what I normally do. Well, what am I, who am I kidding? Somebody's going to pack a meal for me. Or I'll stop at a place where I can get takeout like Chipotle in the United States is my favorite place to grab something healthy and fast that I can take and then go a little picnic with my dogs. Like that's so awesome. So, if you've looked on the map or sniff spot hasn't come to the area you're traveling in yet, then the next best thing would look for a conservation area or a state park or someplace that has a lot of lawn that's away from the highway. You know, if you're traveling during the daytime, you could go to Baseball Diamonds because there's not going to be anybody there during the day. Make sure, of course, wherever you're going goes without saying that you're going to clean up after your dog. But what I would avoid is getting my dog out at a gas station if at all possible. Yes, I do it. Yes, I've done it. But I would then look to go to the rest area part where there's big grassy area at the back when a lot of those times they have picnic tables back there as well. Not my first choice. Sniff spot now would be my first choice, but look for something that's safe and interesting for your dog. Like your dog's not going to want to like get cozy and start sniffing along the side of the highway, right? Nor would you want them to. Also, this is the one time I would use a flexi on an older dog or a puppy because they won't have the understanding of traveling on a loose lead. I mean, the older dog may, but they might be deaf, but give them the freedom to explore on a flexi and you still have safety. I'm not a fan of retractable leashes, but that is the one place that I would use them. Okay. Let's talk about where are you going to stay? Now you might think, oh, well, I'm traveling. I don't know anyone in the area. I got to stay at a hotel. Not necessarily. So, we're going to leave hotel to last. So, my first choice is always an Airbnb. You can just click, I'm going to be traveling with pets on the option. And even if they say no dogs allowed,

I will often contact them and say, look, my dogs are trained and look at my references and Airbnb, and I'd love to stay at your place. And I would say 50% of the time they'd let me stay, but sometimes they just say no. So, it's safer just to go with the option that says pets are allowed. Airbnb, always my first choice. And there is like I mentioned off the top, you can rent an RV and make your whole vacation one big fun thing with your dog in an RV. That would always be fun. Little known fact, many campgrounds have what they call camp cabins. KOAs in the States and in Canada, I know, have these camp cabins where you can go in and just have a cabin in the woods as your place you're staying for the night. So, it's like camping, but you don't have a tent or anything to camp with, right? Now you will have to have your own bedding and stuff like that. But I've stayed at those and those are really interesting and rustic. Also, you can then go to a hotel. Now, things to be aware of if you're vacationing in a hotel. Most hotels are going to spray their lawns. That's how they get them really nice. So, I would encourage you to clean your dog's paws if they're spending any time on that lawn at all, especially when they're in for the night. Also, you need to consider white noise. If you are going out and leaving your dog in the hotel, maybe going out for dinner, then have some white noise. And of course, I would bring a crate in to the hotel. Also, courteous things to do in a hotel is always bring a sheet to put on top of their bedspreads. And I like to bring dog beds in because I don't want my dog sleeping on some of that, whatever chemicals are on those carpets in those hotels. Personally, I avoid hotels if I can, but you know, sometimes I have to go into a hotel with my dog. So, those are some of the things that I'll do to prepare myself and my dog for going into a hotel.
