for, for, for different, uh, sports because we want to compete. Um, I love playing with Bandy and she seems to love playing with me. Strengthen relationship. It's a way to engage. Give her as much freedom as possible. These are really, really good. I can't keep up with you guys. You guys have got some amazing answers. See you, the dog becoming the dog. I want her to be like, why else would you want a dog? Yeah. Great question. Can I just say this one more time? You are my people. I love, I couldn't, I'm giving you hearts. You guys have given me hearts. I'm giving you hearts. I couldn't love these answers any better. These are amazing answers. Okay. And, and just keep them coming, keep them coming because I love reading. I love reading about these because there are, um, a number of reasons that people may choose to train, but what I'm reading, reading from all of you. Yeah. Bonnie, I hear you. I love the word teach. I love the word train is a little bit. Um, I think it, it triggers me a little bit because of past history that I have associated with the word train. So, um, absolutely. I, I, I, I want today's word of the day is the word empowered. And you guys have heard the expression that knowledge is power. And, and I think that's why I don't ever feel like I've arrived. I feel as a community of dog lovers, like the answers that I just read there, honestly, that makes an instant connection with me that, that we are all kind of looking at, at this the same way we are. We're looking at, at our dogs as a part of our life that we share. So why wouldn't we want them to have the best life ever? And so to be empowered, we're giving them knowledge, right? I am constantly seeking for knowledge because I look at how far we've come in our ability to help dogs live with us in a way that gives them the best life possible. And for that to happen, we have to empower them. And in order for us to do that, we have to constantly be learning. And here's what the point I've been trying to say for the last five minutes. I think we've come a long way in understanding how to grow that connection and grow that bond. But I think we are just at the very beginning of the, of the climbing mountain climb of knowledge where dogs are concerned. I think we've, and what, what we've got in our recallers programs and, and, and our homeschool, the dog and Hanley 360 and agility nation that represents a complete paradigm shift for many people on how we train dogs. But I look at it. It's, it's constantly be retooling. And anytime people justify training dogs in a way that's, I hate to say different is bad because I

want this podcast, this podcast, I want this broadcast to be heard by everybody who trains a dog. I do not want anybody who chooses to train differently than us feel like an outsider listening to this. I don't want anybody who chooses to train differently than us feel like they are being shunned. And so they aren't going to be welcome here because this is the way I look at, at dog training. You know, I don't look at it. You know, there's a lot of different approaches and some of them, I think the dividing line is, is the word punishment. And so there are people who use what I call escalating punishment. And that is they train, they teach the dog, whatever. And then they, they expect those behaviors to be reliable. And then they, they give punishment. And if that punishment is ineffective, they keep escalating the punishment until they get the behaviors that they want. Now with those people, and I don't want to say those people, like they're aliens or they're, you know, they're a hindrance to society. To people who choose to train dogs that way, that it's very clear. And they believe that is the kindest way to train a dog. Now the, the, the balanced approach is they still use positive punishment and negative punishment. punishment. Um, but they probably use a lot more food or reinforcement in their training before they go to punishment. Now, then there would be, um, people who are, are force-free. Um, and they, they don't want to use any positive or negative punishment and negative punishment. If you aren't familiar, that would be, um, anything that you take away from the dog that, um, they view as, is it is, it's going to decrease their behavior. Like, um, you were playing like sweat, tater cell might be throwing the bone up against the wall. Cause he goes crazy. If I take the bone away for 10 minutes and then give it back, that is punishment aimed at altering his behavior at throwing the bone up against the wall. Did it teach him anything? I don't think so. Just might've saved the TV. That's all over the fireplace. Okay. So force-free is, I don't want any punishment of any kind, no timeouts. And therefore, like when you think about it, putting a leash and collar on a dog is punishment because you're taking the dog away from what they really want. Um, then there's people who only use a clicker to train behaviors. And what we do is I consider that what I call it gamed base. It is not, it's, it's entirely rich at reinforcement, but the reinforcement isn't just food. The reinforcement isn't just toys. The reinforcement, the biggest part of the reinforcement

we use is permission and obviously food and toys. And we, do we use punishment? We probably use, um, timeouts, but very small amount. It's not a, it's more of a, a, uh, inconsequential, like we aren't thinking about it. All right. This is what I want you to consider. No matter what kind of training there is, what we are looking at is the, the type of reinforcement we use. So some people, I don't know that there's many that do this now. When I first started out in dog training in the eighties, there were people who did not, the only kind of reinforcement they used was praise, praise and the lack of punishment is the reinforcement for the dog. So the, the things that differentiate these different types of training are the intensity of the reinforcement. So do you just give like a small cookie or their various intensity? So for my dog, this permission to run with her dog, that's a highly intense reinforcement, but this is what I want you to consider. Let's say you are looking at my dogs as an example of extremely well trained and well behaved dogs in any environment that have been trained in a way with very little punishment, very little. I w I can't think of a time, I guess you could say a crate door closing on them would be punishment in the, in crate games, very mild, and it's very inconsequential. So think about my dogs, very well trained in any environment. Now think about somebody who uses escalating punishment that if it is a dog trainer, who's got brilliant dog training or brilliant timing, brilliant selection of criteria, and they train their dogs using escalating punishment, meaning they might use a, a choke chain, a pinch collar, a shock collar, a brilliant dog trainer. Who's got excellent timing and somebody like myself, brilliantly well executed dog training, both of these dogs. Do you think you could tell a difference between those dogs? Do you think you could look at those dogs and go, I know which ones have been trained with Susan Garrett. And I know which ones have been trained with escalating punishment. Do you think you could tell, leave, leave a comment? I'm looking at your thinking, I bet you're thinking about this. Do you think you could tell a dog that's trained with very little punishment, but brilliant, brilliant, um, use of reinforcement and very little reinforcement, but excellent use of punishment. Everybody says yes, yes, yes. Scott says no. I personally do not believe you would be able to tell because a brilliant dog trainer, those dogs, even though there's escalating punishment in their world,

those dogs are trained by somebody who's gifted at timing criteria and rate of reinforcement. And, and, and those dogs live their life with as much clarity as my dogs do. I don't believe you or I will ever be able to tell. I am acknowledging that dogs trained with a ton of punishment can be as happy as dogs trained my with in the, in the culture that we have. I believe they can. The difference is two things. Number one, it's your choice, how you want to approach your dog training. Number two, it's not the dogs trained exceptionally well. It's what about the ones that are not trained very well that you try to apply the games. You try to apply the, the punishment and you don't get it as good as Susan Garrett, or you don't get it as good as the, the man or the girl that's of that's using a exclusive or majority of punishment. What is the downside of that? And it's catastrophic in my opinion, because if you are playing games and you aren't getting it quite right, the difference is your dogs might be a little spoiled and you might not have, um, the kind of Christmas of behaviors that I have now, depending on how badly you're training it. I believe in our programs, we're just teaching you to play games and it's easy to get, it's easier to get it right. Then to teach you the timing and when to execute and how to not get emotional about that. Right? So, so Scott, Scott, uh, you know, nailed it. The problem is mind mindfulness and people knowing themselves and possessing self-control. I think the best dogs, excuse me, the best dog trainers using punishment, the best of the best do not allow emotions to come into the picture. Now, I personally love that the way we train, we fill it with emotion. We fill it with the joy that we have when we see our dogs doing something amazing. And I'm sure those great dog trainers who use very little, uh, who, who use more punishment than they do reinforcement also get excited when their dogs do it. Okay. So, um, so Paul, Paula says, we forget that every dog is different. One method is not a catch-all for every dog. Paula, what I am suggesting is not a method. What I'm suggesting does work for every single dog. If you train in a way that you focus on food, toys and permission, what is it that lights that dog up? You can have an amazingly well-trained dog without needing punishment. And if you need punishment, it would be less than 5%. So I do not buy into, unless I'm reading you, you know, wrong Paula. Um, every dog needs a different, may need a different approach

within a program. For example, tater salad. And that's why, you know, if you guys went to our um, where I got to put that up there right now, if you went to dogs at.com forward slash cyber, and there's a video that I talked about training two types of dogs, dogs that are driven to work like my border collie and dogs who are really like, could I just sit in the sunbeam and, uh, count the, the sheep in the clouds. Oh yeah. Look at that one. That was a, that's tater salad. So I can't train them the same, but the system works the same. I just need to focus more on punish or on permissions with my border collies and more on behavior chains with a dog, like tater salad. So within the system, you need to alter it. I that maybe that's what you were saying, um, Paula, and I misunderstood you, but, but, but it, it isn't that some dogs need punishment and some dogs don't. I don't believe any dog needs escalating punishment. Right. I don't believe it. And here's what I know. I don't know where, where the, um, the expression came from. Um, and it, it is. And, and I know that I almost hate saying it because it is, it's some, it gets, it does trigger people when I say this, this, uh, expression. Um, I think it might go, I don't know, but it, it was something like, um, violence begins where knowledge ends. And when I feel like I'm getting frustrated that I'm not getting through to a student, that frustration, in my opinion, is a form of violence because I'm not exuding all the positive emotions that I could. And so that I'm taking as a trigger of Susan, there's a lack of knowledge on your part. What are you missing that could help this student achieve more? Because there are students who have, who have a problem with mechanical skills of dog training. There are students who maybe they, because of their, their, you know, the dog is deaf or the dog is blind, or maybe they've had two hip replacements or they're in a scooter that things have to be altered for them. But that doesn't mean the method. I hate calling what we do as a method. I just think it's applying how dogs learn to, to life. That's the way I look at it. Okay. So, so I want to, uh, to go back and talk about this now. So if you look at what we want to do, I'm going to stop this. Hold on. I gotta, I gotta get this off of there. Hold on. Here we go. What we want to do is teach something. So, um, I don't know which one of you said I lose the word teach rather than train. I much preferred or where I'm going that way. I much prefer the word teach than training. So

we all, regardless of how we approach dog training, I believe everybody's goal is to empower a dog that everybody, no matter how they train, they want the dog to be empowered, to make good choices when they're not around. That's the goal. Now, how do we teach? How do we teach that? How do we teach that to the dog is going to be different. And then the assumption or the expectation of what taught looks like? What does it, what does it look like when the dog understands what we want? And once we've decided they, they understand it, we've taught it well enough that they should get it. Then we need to test it. And when we test it, if we don't get what we want, then what is the consequences of the dog, not giving us what we want. These three things are, are intentionally, these are the three things that we have to decide as a dog owner, what we're going to do with that. Because I look at it as, um, as somebody who runs a team. And, um, if you were on my team, wouldn't that be fun? You can come work, work with us. If you're on my team and I gave you the job, like, um, I did to the newest member of our team, Aaron. I said, Hey, Aaron, I am so overwhelmed with Instagram. Would you like to take over and help create some posts to help, uh, excite people about training this way? And she said, yeah, I'd like to do that. And I said, well, here's our goal to get people engaged and curious about what we do. And we talked a little bit about what, and then I'm like, have at it. Okay. Now, if I'd been saying, okay, I've been able to grow our Instagram channel to here, Aaron, and you can't let me down. You've got to grow. Every post has got to get more people engaged. We've got to get more people understanding this way of training. And then guess what? The first post Aaron put up, it was lovely, but it was like in the lower 10% of all of our posts. And so we talked about it. I said, I love what you did. I love the art. Here's the things I loved about it. Um, yeah. How about it now? If I had said in, in one of our team meetings that we have every good morning, did everyone see what Aaron put up on Instagram? What a load of crap that was, wasn't it? It didn't get anybody liking it or responding to it. Like, so what is the you've taught that? And now you're testing. So I taught Aaron what I wanted. My test was go and make a post. And the consequence of her not getting great engagement was me ridiculing me sending her out in front of the team. Instead of her now wanting to create posts that help people understand the

benefits of reinforcement and game-based dog training. Now, Aaron's shift would be, how can I make Susan happy? And so Aaron would then have gone and looked at all the posts that Susan did. And she would try to just recreate what Susan did. I w I would have been empowering her not to make a mistake. I wouldn't have been empowering her to help reach more dog lovers. And guess what? Aaron put up a post yesterday and it was in 24 hours. It out, it created more conversation, more reach, more likes than any post I've ever put on Instagram in three years. It created more interest in 24 hours than some of my posts have been able to do in three years. So that is empowering. And that is what the way I look at dog training. We create expectations. We, we give our dogs the tools and we test them. And then when they get the answer wrong, we don't say you're at bad, you're wrong. You should know better. We say, I guess I didn't teach it the way I thought I did. I think I need to work on how I'm teaching this. Let's go back to the drawing board and try it again. And, and the consequence is I got to find my, the consequence to the dog is yeah, let's back. Let's just try this again in a different way. Let's just work on training something else. And every time this is what we call do land in do land. It's not about don't do that. You were wrong, bad choice. It's about being curious. I wonder why you would have chose that way. I wonder why you thought taking the sweet potato pie off the counter at Thanksgiving was a, was, was an appropriate choice for you. Hmm. I wonder where I've gone wrong here. Instead of that, we, we, you know, there's two different approaches. So the difference between all the different training methods are the assumptions we make at what is taught the expectations we have of our dogs versus the expectations we have of ourselves and what consequences we choose. And as you guys have heard me say time and time and time and time again, you become the person you're meant to be by training your dog. And I'm not saying that people who choose to use punishment are not nice people. Some of my, I I've got a lot of great friends who choose to use a lot more punishment in their dog training than I do. But I look at it as for me, personally, I've evolved as a human because I've learned what my expectations of my dog are and how that can make me be better. Does that make sense to you guys? Do you see? Yeah. That, that it's, it's not about us or them. It's not about, you know, I believe doing, doing a program like ours,

like recallers or homeschool, the dog handling three 60. If you're doing agility or agility nation, when you get it wrong, that's the measure. What's what happens when you get it wrong? Because I, as much as I'd love to come and visit each and every one of you in your home, I have to rely on you watching the videos, you downloading the PDFs, you applying it, videoing your own work and talking to our, to myself and our coaches in the classroom to evaluate how you're understanding this. And while you aren't understanding it, what's the fallout for the dog? Oh, they have a little extra fun. They have a, you know, a lack of understanding on the rules versus what's the fallout. If I try to teach you the timing of a well-timed collar correction without emotion, what's the fallout of that? What happens to the dog in that situation? So as we're learning, I think we're, you know, I, I think we're on a cusp of an explosion of us connecting with dogs in a bigger way. Um, and that, and that's my, and that's what empowerment means to me. It's about humans and dogs living in do land, not just for our dogs, but for those of you who are parents, for your kids, for those of you like me who lead a team for your team. That's what do land looks like to me. And it's tough. It's tough because dog training has been taught a certain way for 200 years and it's incrementally changing, but the change doesn't have to happen in increments. It could happen in exponential jumps. And I believe that's where we are looking at how can we create clarity, understanding in a way that the dog isn't making choices based on what would happen if I'm wrong. The dog is making choices based on how can I earn reinforcement? This is it. I want it. I got it. And so that's how you get the dog who chooses like, oh yeah, that sweet potato pie that's on the counter. Yeah. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, my business. I got that. I got it. No worries. Yeah. All right. That's what we're looking for. Okay. I hope that makes sense. I hope you understand what I mean by empower now. Now here's what I'd like for you to do. But until you do, if you're in our recallers program or our homeschool, the dog program, and you're, and you're figuring this out and you're going to a local classes just for the socialization, please, please, please always know you are your dog's best advocate. Your dog is relying on you. So if somebody is trying to get you to make your dog do something and you don't feel comfortable with it, just smile and just say, I'm good for today. Thank you. And if they say, no, look at it's easy. Let me take your dog. Oh, oh, nay, nay. Thank you. I'm good. Please, please, please. We are all our dog's best advocates. Do not let anybody take your dog or take your puppy to show you. Okay. Unless you know what they're going to do is just play a fun game with your dog and it's going to, your dog is going to, you know, ask yourself this question. Is my dog going to end up more confident by playing with this instructor than they are now? If the answer is no, or I'm not sure, then you just say, thank you. I'm good. I'm going to say that question again. If by handing over your puppy or dog to an instructor or somebody who's an authority, you can say, my dog is going to come back more confident and happy than when I gave

them, pass them off. Then if you can't say that, then you say, thank you. I'm good. I'm just going to work on this on my own at home. I'm going to go and check out Susan Garrett's recallers and homeschool the dog program. And that's how we're going to get there. All right. Okay. Yeah. If it was me, you know what I love, I get lost in time when I get to train puppies or people who are, or dogs that are brand new to this way of training, who have had, uh, maybe some, some experiences that have left them confused and a little bit, um, untrusting of people love, love, love working with those dogs. Um, whether it be in agility or in just pet puppy. So I had a friend of mine who said today, she was saying, Oh, my dog's so afraid of the seesaw. I said, Oh, bring them over. I love that. I'm the seesaw genie. I love working with dogs who are afraid because I love bringing clarity to dogs. Okay. And there, she's got to take these massive big horse truck. They're meant to be chewable, but they, uh, the, the technician who gave them to me said, by the way, no dogs like to chew these. I've not seen a dog who liked them yet. So you'll have to be creative. And we try to like break them in half and roll them in food and do the pill pockets. And she would like start chewing with the front of her teeth, get rid of the antibiotic, have that back. I'm eating the stuff around it. And I just decided, you know what? I don't want to fight with you. I want you to want to eat this. And so I shaped her to eat a horrid tasting antibiotic twice a day. You can shape your dog to be a willing participant in anything, anything. Okay. I got to jump off. Cause I'm, I am going off going a little bit long. So, um, hearts to all of you.
