I promise you guys you know people who make these promises that oh we can make everything so much better we can we can make it it's going to be all sunshine and unicorns for you and your dog from here on out you just follow our program and that's all it's going to be I am going to promise you it absolutely can get better and it can get better than you even imagine it could be but it's going to take some patience number one I would think that is the number one thing that people need um no scratch that patience would be number two number one is belief that you absolutely it's not going to work um and that's just part of the podcast that we released today is about about what is your mindset about about whatever that challenge is so we're gonna go through things like from a puppy so you if you followed me for for any length of time uh you've heard me say this over and over and over that our dogs are always doing the best they can with the education we've given them in the environment we've put them in I'm going to give you an easy way to remember this guys anything you're dealing with it's going to come down to three things it's the skill the environment or the will skill will environment those are the three things so here's the challenge I'm we'll give you an example that um you know when I go to I went to an agility trial on the weekend a great group of folk down there in in Houston um but I I you know people who are you have these expectations when you go on the ring and things don't work out and then you the dog gets yelled at or picked up and carried off I saw so many dogs being picked up and carried off what you're saying is you were wrong you don't get to have any more fun and it's meant to be a Punisher I used to do it myself but think about anything that goes wrong whether it's your puppy peeing on the carpet your puppy running off with the kids toys and playing keep away whether it's your dog reacting at another dog on leash ask yourself is this a skill is it a will or as an environment the problem is everybody assumes it's the dog's will and a lot of that is because we've been culturally led to believe that the dog makes these choices con um consciously that they're going to uh say yeah bring it on I I yeah I'm gonna have you on or you know what I know you told me not to go in the tunnel but I'm going in that tunnel it's rarely you know what it might be will let's say we have a dog who you're trying to teach them to bring back a ball and it's a rescue dog you've had it I don't know you've had it six months you've been working on this problem for five months the dog still won't bring back a ball

skill will or environment you could say what's will the dog has no interest in the bowl I've done you know I've been working at the six months to say that is to say this dog is limited rather than saying the approach that I've been taking to this dog's education has not led me the results that I'm looking for because I believe our dogs are always doing the best they can with the education that we've given them skill will environment I don't think it's ever will if it's will I mean people could look at belief or excuse me this when she was a puppy when she was an 18 month old puppy and I still couldn't get her to show any interest in going over a jump and you could say oh well she's a dud you know it was bound to happen every dog Susan garrisoned has been on a world team she's bound to get a dud after 30 years isn't she I I wouldn't I would say I want my dog to have joy in life and so the approaches and the training methodologies that I've taken that have brought me success with all my other dogs hadn't brought me success with her success being defined as my dogs having fun and the two of us connecting in something we love and because that wasn't happening I wasn't going to say it's the dog's will I'm going to say what else could it be if this wasn't true if I really have done everything possible is that true well it's not because I still have a dog who is not loving the sport it ended up being a nutrition problem with the biggest biggest um base of the of what was going on with her and so when we look at our dog training you keep those three things in mind and now let's look at the emotional component on that and the first emotional component I want you guys to consider is the emotional component on you let's say you get a dog from a breeder that has got a massive history of success and you get this new puppy maybe it's your first sport bread golden retriever maybe it's your first puppy you've only ever had rescues before and there is expectations in your mind on what success should be and when you and your puppy are not connecting and your puppy is running off every it seems like any time they get off leash and there's an opening they run away the emotional impact that has on you even though you get outwardly you express you you kind of release on the dog that the dog is a this and a that and an independent and stubborn and spiteful and inwardly there is a lot of shame that you bury there is a lot of feeling you've let this dog down that somebody else could have done if Susan Garrett owned this dog I bet I bet she would have solved this problem and you burden your emotional self and you might not even realize you're doing it

but here's the thing dogs are absolute magnets for our emotions absolute magnets I believe dogs are healers and so they'll take on and absorb anything that that we shouldn't be carrying and so you've got to recognize it doesn't serve you to take on that mindset it doesn't serve you to say like one of my students said this weekend at the agility trial I was trying to um do exactly what you did and you did it effortlessly and flawlessly and when I went out there I was like a hot mess and nothing went right and my dog didn't go where I wanted it to and uh how how you just looks it makes you make it look so easy and I said to her and I I actually hadn't realized this myself because today is my 62nd birthday I started competing my first competition not training my first competition in dog agility happened when I was 29 years old I've been competing in the sport of dog agility longer in my lifetime than I've not been I've been competing for 33 years and I was alive for 28 before I was competing and so you've got to cut yourself slack number one don't compare yourself to anyone number two you have that dog for a reason so in order to reach the dog and bring out their best we have to help them emotionally be at their best in order to help them emotionally be at their best we have to examine what are we burdening ourselves with that it's time to put down so ask yourself that question right now what in your relationship with your dog have you been burdening yourself with and you know it's time you let that go because that's the first step to being able to help your dog with their emotional problems you've got to be at a place where other people's opinion of you doesn't matter where your dogs success in the world of what other people think doesn't matter that all that matters is that you have the deepest possible connection with your dog that you have the deepest possible belief in your dog and that your focus in your training is about how much joy does my dog have to today compared to yesterday and if you keep that measuring step my friend I promise you that next week you're going to be in a much better place than you are this week the week after you're going to be in a much better place than you were two weeks ago you have to always consider what is my what am I bringing to the table and know that there are there are some days I will go out to train and if if things don't go the way I plan then I might just say you know what let's do a couple tricks and call it a day because I cannot I don't have the emotional bandwidth to teach you something new or to troubleshoot what you're showing me and that's okay that's okay you have to be your best

self when you're dealing with a dog training challenge like dog training is never linear not for any of us it's never oh we got that train that we can get that train now we can get that train now we can get that train no it doesn't work with that you go we got that trainer and I go to oh crap yeah there's real life and then you got to bring this back up again and then you're going along everything's good and then maybe a little uh thing that I didn't think that was gonna happen and then you're like getting up here and you're like I thought I had that trained no it wasn't trained you have to go back and correct that so it's never linear and just be open to what you're seeing today and now let's talk about your dog's emotions because we can't deal with whatever whether that any challenges emotional challenge to me so the dog who um gets too high for dog agility and doesn't think and and unfortunately those dogs are are often picked up and taken off out of the ring and I ask if you're doing your absolute best you know you guys have heard the responses to um to to um being pressed or being put in a tough spot it's fight flight or freeze well a good friend of mine who has a online business that helps she's a PHD psychologist and she helps other psychologists with their clients and she said there's actually a fourth we I believe we see it in dogs she mentioned it to me recently that you'll see it a lot in people and I said oh my gosh you see it way more in dogs fight flight freeze or please now it might not look like the dog who is flying around the agility ring knocking bars grabbing off off course tunnels is trying to please you oh they're just trying to please themselves they're just doing what they want their their way of pleasing is oh you like this agility here let me do more agility I'm not saying I know what your dog is thinking I'm just saying I know that a dog who is showing the inability to function at a high level is not does not should not be punished because punishment actually makes the excitement get higher they're going to try harder they're going to go they're going to go to the next level fight fight fight flight freeze or please and so oh okay you can you write them down okay okay um question did I ever feel like I was losing connection with this during those times absolutely absolutely and that to me was the biggest burden of failure uh it isn't about will she be on the podium at the World Championships it isn't about will she be on a world team is it about will she ever get a medal in agility or will she ever compete there was times I didn't know if she would ever compete in agility and it

still wasn't my priority my priority was I don't feel we are connecting I don't feel she enjoys doing this with me and that's what I wanted every training opportunity to be between us that everything that we're doing is something she's loving to do so and that comes down to training strategies guys that I would just go back to my recolor games with her and what recall and the recall our games took her from a place of confusion to clarity so I can do these which meant fight when we're thinking that is it skill will or environment well agility skill should never be put in before confidence in everyday life or confidence in um the skills that make a great agility dog so a great recall um the great great what we call reinforcement Zone loose leash walking for me is a big big family pet skill that leads to a big big agility skill because my dog has to follow my body motion and that's what being you know understanding that is all about so reinforcement Zone recalls retrieving um listening to their words at a distance so can you sit or down or stand from a distance can you just about pick something like like it's making good choices on your own Choice Based training is so empowering for dogs who are not in a place of great confidence so dogs who are who are fearful reactive um over the top games of choice give them power which is what is just so um important for creating That Base connection okay okay um fawning versus appeasement same thing I mean I would guess I would I would have to see the dog but I know with this e she becomes like a big liquor and that is her please fight fright fight fight flight freezer please that is that is her her please and so before you can help your dog remember you've got to let go of any of the burdens of the emotional burdens you're carrying because your emotional health has a massive impact on your overall health because if you are like when I'm rehearsing the things I could have done better with Izzy I lose sleep I do not sleep and so sleep is your number one component of Health you've got to get good solid sleep and so and then you have your mental health your emotional health impacts your your mental health and and so your emotional health has a massive impact on your overall health as it does your dogs and um the study that I've talked about over and over again Dr Biagio study out of Italy just proves that our dogs pick up on our emotions and so what we want is number one we need to have a training strategy that helps our dogs feel safe number one nothing happens if they don't feel safe which means it's skill wheel environment that starts with environment you do not try and teach somebody or a

dog or a person something if they don't feel safe imagine you're walking you know home from the store or somebody jumps out of a car puts a bag over your head throws you in the back of a car in their of their van bounds your hands you know takes the hood off and tries to teach you algebra I mean algebra the best of times probably isn't a great topic but when you are emotionally feeling unsafe learning is never going to happen now that's an extreme example but a dog can walk into a building with other dogs and immediately feel unsafe they're not going to be at their best which is why I think our students have such success with our online classrooms I mean a lot of people like to go to their local classes as well but the online classes especially ours because it's you know decade now of of success stories you're doing it in your house where the dog feels safe so number one your training has got to start where the dog feels safe and then you can go to a place where you are offering choices in that safe place because that brings Clarity and confidence woo now we've got safety and confidence those are the two big recipe ingredients for your recipe to emotional stability right that's what we're looking for for your dog and it's got to be strategic on your part and I would say I've told you the things that have to happen and let me tell you the number one thing that will hold you back from having success and that is belief in your dog and belief in yourself so you've got to ask yourself now do you believe it is possible to overcome your do you believe it's possible for your dog to overcome what they're seeing what you're seeing right now so if I said I'm going to show up to your house every day and we're gonna have a plan we're gonna start in the morning we're gonna have a plan and that might involve like three to five Training sessions that are three to five minutes long I'll go over the plan I'm Gonna Leave You and I'll come back in two days and I'm gonna check on you and how that went I'm going to give you more plan do you believe that a month from now you'll have a different dog than you're seeing today yes or no but just put in the comments yes or no do you think that if I showed up at your house every other day give you a training plan we evaluate what we're dealing with what is the priority do you believe that we can be in a different place with your dog okay so there's a lot of you that's what I love to see you know what that tells me you believe in your dog and there's a lot of people that don't you believe in your dog now here's the tough one do you believe in yourself do you believe you have what it takes

oh Susan I'm so busy I've got my shopping I got my kids I got my work and I've got all these commitments and I've got you know my my elderly fathers now living with us and I just no no no no no okay well let's hold on to the to the previous thought you've told me you know it's possible with this dog now I want you to see a way through you can give yourself Grace give yourself Grace enough that you can move the needle with your dog now I am not going to suggest you do it alone I am going to suggest you join one of our online programs because those are the training plans that gives you the incremental steps that takes you to a better place next week than you are this week and it works so well that I don't want you to I don't want to add an extra burden to you today I want you to I'm gonna I'm gonna minute I'm gonna share with you what that looks like and why to this week is the best time to join but you can do it try it out and I give you my birthday guarantee meaning I don't want anyone to feel unsafe just like your dog's feeling unsafe I remember I bought a online program um and they they build me monthly once they got me in there I couldn't get out I didn't want to stay in there but they made it impossible it took me three months to get out I don't want anybody to not feel safe with their dog my priority is that you move the needle with your dog so when you get in our programs you have a week two weeks or longer depending on the program to try some of the plans see if it works with you in your schedule and then decide and come on back and say to my team you know what um I think that that um you know I need more help or you know what my team will help help you show you where that help is or you can say ah my car just broke down I I need to rebuild the engine so can I have my money back we do know when anyone to feel stuck so we have a guarantee that you you try it out for a week or two I know you're going to see progress and that is what is going to change that connection you feel with your dog is going to change okay some more questions that you had for me here um did you have connection with this outside of agility or did the issue extend yes the the issue was was just she she didn't have the energy the drive to do much of anything she did love to tug and she loved to chase her mother but I think she had pain is what I mean I have no way of knowing that but that's the way it appeared to me and so nothing she never appeared to be overjoyed in life with anything except running after her mother in the field and chasing the barn swallows that's it because she didn't have to use conscious thought it

uh okay Sally says I've done recalls and create games and homeschooler dog and wag Nation I can't get enough that's awesome Sally okay any other questions I'm scrolling down here um we love Switzerland too by the way like Kim and I loved Switzerland uh I remember seeing chasing birds in one of your presentations I also remember an episode in which you were referring to rough love with tater salad because he had chased a squirrel I think what am I missing from those episodes how did you react so anytime like my dogs are not perfect so they're going to make choices where the they were the ones that I was not expecting you to like two weeks ago this is the first time this happened I think in I think it was the first time in at least 10 years this has ever happened to me do you know what I'm going to talk about Kim happened with one of one of my dogs one of my dogs that made a wrong choice and absolutely shocked me I was super super I was so busy and I'm like Kim I love I love getting out and training the dogs we've got Kevin I got this slice of time I got appointment here I got appointment here we're going out we're going to train so we can get it in there let's go so um I don't know if my dogs felt my intentional urgency and got them a little hyped up I don't know if it was a full moon I don't know if Kim sabotaged me and told them to do this but Kim was on her way to the building with little belief I was going I let Swagger out he ran and followed him to the building and then I told this and minty to okay you can go and then I was walking to the building and I I might have got four five yeah I had four or five strides I wasn't even on the gravel and I heard splash [Music] um this this went from the front door and b-lined it into the pond I was shocked she she is never done it was yeah I want to say Kim said go for a swim and then my dogs got in trouble because of it so what is that what happens next so I go over and I I might have said some bad words because I was so intentional about what I was doing I you know I only had this one window to train as I mentioned that momentum said hey she's in I'm in and uh I I just you know I should have just dove in but I wasn't going to dive in I hate our skin keep on I mean it's beautiful kit Linda swims in it but it's too slippery for me anyway told them to get out March them up to the house and uh I went I went training without them and it's a hot so hot that the swim look good you know what they do it they went from an air-conditioning house and they were on their way to a nice School building I have no idea so my point is my dogs do things that I

don't expect and the next thing I do is I plan for what's the reinforcement that I can put into this dog so that those choices don't ever happen to happen happen again another great example belief two weeks ago decided she was going to I have two chairs that they're kind of like rounded chairs do you guys know what I mean like the backs are rounded she's decided those are for Terriers to roll and rub their backs on dogs aren't allowed on my furniture so the first time it happened I just picked her up and put her in her X pen I didn't say anything to her and then uh it happened the next day again I think it happened three or four times before I left to go to Dallas and I came home from doubt from Texas and like it happened twice yesterday morning and I said Kim this is like a katrillion bouts of punishment how much reinforcement has she had for the right thing I think I need to buy her a new dog bed that's rounded and then Kim and Chelsea went all crazy and said no you are not allowed to buy no new dog beds I think that was unkind but um and so today she has had any time she's rolled on her back and it wasn't in one of my chairs she's got I've just made it rain with cookies on her times that I've got her I walked her around yesterday and that's what I said to Kim I want you to walk around the chairs and if she looks at the chair and looks back at you she can get a cookie but not oh see that would be perfect Kim Kim just found a nice little round sofa for her it's a dog bed it is well I told you I'm all in on dog beds so oh they're called barrel chairs thank you Karen so so now she she had one this was a crazy one she was near the said chair she went under the coffee table and was rolling under the coffee table I have some cushions under there and she was rolling on the cushions that was fine I threw the cookies under the coffee table and I got I didn't even get back to my coffee and she was in the red chair so this is great though we've had one failure and tons of reinforcement so my my thought is it's never you know it's skill will or environment she's allowed to get on the furniture when she goes to Kim's house she's not allowed at my house and now it's now it's just an understanding reinforcement has got to lead the way to help her to get to that place okay so what's your comment okay uh next question how was pink I'm a little obsessed I get why people follow that lady all over the world and go to her concerts I think I could retire and do the same it was amazing I think pink and I could be really good friends um so if you're if you're listening Alicia just give me a call um how do I learn more about reactivities

during walks you know um reactivity if you consider it is your dog's emotional state skill will environment are you putting them in an environment where they can't they can't uh freeze I mean it's that they wouldn't feel safe they can't please they can't flee they're on a leash all they can do is fight so don't put them in those environments until you build up their confidence into and so the things that they may have reacted to become white noise and that's what our choice based programs do is they help a dog alter their focus so that things that would previously trigger them become white noise that's that's their whole goal I'm not saying it's I can guarantee it's possible for all dogs because honestly some dogs need a certified veterinary behaviors to help them through these things but you know I can tell you we've had many many different dogs go through our programs that have had massive successes okay all right so any questions let's give away some prizes now any questions about any of our programs yeah pink come on give me a call yes does Pink have a dog you know pink we could we could you know even if she has a cat we have cat people in our programs okay here's a question my lovely dog lives with stepson's big old untrained bully husky can I still train her you know what I would protect your dog's confidence by not Part of Me by oh she doesn't by oh she does okay so I would protect your dog's confidence by not allowing that husky to to beat up on on them so we have to be our dog's best Advocate and if it means having baby gates or if it means you know giving the Husky like a Kong to to chew on anytime your dog's around we have to um we have to advocate for our dogs and not put them in a situation where they are going to have to defend themselves it's not fair and that's what was happening with tater he was he was relentless with the lady who owned him her boyfriend's like what was an 11 year old Bouvier I think it was no Akita okay yeah please list the lady in Austria who helps with dietary problems I just can't it's unfair to do to her because she has a very full full business um and if there's ever a time when she gives me permission to do that then I will but I I will tell you there's so many people that can help I just got a resource yesterday of somebody in my area that does live blood analysis for dogs whether you believe in that or not it's definitely something I'm excited to look into with my dogs um okay I wanted to eventually start my 10 month old Brittany I've never trained agility where should a beginner start Caitlyn thank you for asking this question because the wrong taking the wrong fork in this

road could end up taking you and your Britney down a path of a lot of frustration so here's what I would advise join handling 360. and when you are getting into the program anywhere along the way either you or one of our coaches will say I think this might be a little bit too early so we're going to suggest you go back to recallers and we will allow you to put handling 360 on hold well you go and finish recallers so I would now you might say um I've got no connection with my Brittany we really aren't a team and just start at recallers but so many people I I can't tell you the number of places I've been where they have puppy agility classes oh my gosh do you know what puppy agility classes should look like it should look like freaking recallers that's what it should look like there should be no time when a puppy needs to see a tunnel or a um dog walk or an A-frame or a seesaw there should be no time do you know why that happened is because it's difficult to come up with games that engage dogs that don't involve props that they might be curious about but that's not what's best for those dogs so my dogs it's they're usually 15 or 16 months old before they get to see real equipment there's in handling 360 the first two classrooms maybe two and a half you can do in your living room you don't need any agility equipment because it's about you two coming becoming together as a team I can handle like I do in agility without any obstacles with my dogs so Caitlyn I am so glad you asked that question and I think um I know if you join us this will be the best thing that you've ever done with your that you could have ever done with your dog um okay Jilly's a complete sport instead of training with a class in person yes Sue Yen yes because in a class skill will environment the environment is so overwhelming there's so many things for you to take in agility is filled with complexities handling 360 takes those complexities to makes them super simple and grows your confidence as a Handler and your dog's confidence so that when you are in a place where you're ready to get on real agility equipment or go to a real class I promise you suyen you will be the star of that class I know that because we've had people that came through recallers had never even seen dog agility but just join handling 360 because well recalls were so much fun why not do this and they end up with agility dogs that were far better than people who've been in the sport for 10 years a hundred percent telling you the truth on that one um I'm going to move from home school the dog then recall is nh360 and I can start reading colors yep absolutely that's a great plan Julie

yep why each recolor game in different environments before a little bit on for the next game that's a great question this is Broad for all dog training do we recommend doing recall our games in each location like each day each game in a new location before we go on to a new game and it's a great question because your dog's confidence will tell so remember skill will entire environment environment is the key environment always wins repeat after me environment always wins so we want to create environment environmental neutrality for your dog where they will play whatever game that you're asking them to play in you've got a gold environment the gold environment for me upstairs here in my office might be one but my best one is my bedroom close the door there's nothing going on they can can hear the other dogs my bedroom is number one we have downstairs in the lower level which used to be like a home theater room is now a another dog training room and that's environment number two my office is probably the third best but it's an open concept so they can hear other noises so those are the three areas that I might play the games before I would go to the park or um try to take my dog to sit outside a grocery store as people go by right so environment always wins we want to create environmental neutrality and you're going to do that in your own home which is why our classrooms work so darn well and then you can grow so now you've got games that you know I know my puppies or dogs will hand Target anywhere Anytime Anyplace because they've done it so well in the house but what happens is people take a game that they can sort of do in the house after prompting them three or four times and then take them like to a class and the dog's like I can't I've never heard that word before and then people say correct them he's blowing you off he's trying to be dominant no he's not skill will or environment you did not grow environmental neutrality at home how do you expect to get the will to show the skill when the environment is so powerful okay so um okay my Husky and rough collie just passed their cgc last night thanks to recallers on your podcast they're two years old this year I'm getting a puppy in August I'm so excited to start the puppy off with recalls yay Sydney so exciting uh are there coaches for each level a hundred percent and we have coaches in every time zone around the world we have a lot of coaches in Australia we have coaches in Europe South Africa of course throughout North America um Brazil so different depending on where you live in the world or like I like getting up at between four and five in the morning so

I I'm not doing any dog training after eight o'clock at night that's just not happening for me because that's my wind down time so like when you train you know one of our coaches will be on and the level you're training at yes yes if you are brand new to dog ownership oh my gosh we have so many examples go to that to that page and you're going to see on the celebrate page examples of we post some of the case studies from some of our students and you could even Google Susan Garrett's recallers Susan Garrett's handling 360 and find videos from previous students and I I know you will um okay so I yes more questions yep yep okay my pop is strictly an outside pup will my connection not be as strong and I gotta tell you there was there's there's a time where that comment would get a lot of judgment because most of us are of the feeling that our dogs should be living in the house so I have seen some amazing connections with people have with their dogs that live outside for whatever reason it might be a guardian dog for their flock it might be um they have allergies so you know we think of an outside dog as a dog that lives as crappy life changed to a post or a living you know with a in a doghouse and nobody gives it any lover attention so an outside dog can work amazingly but you are right that what we need to give that dog number one is fill their emotional needs and it is very difficult you've got to make sure there's enrichment for the dog outside you've got to make sure that they get connection with you on a very regular basis you need we need to make sure they get regular exercise living in a backyard is not exercise especially when you live in a backyard I don't know what your situation is but there's a lot of things that you can do to make sure that dog is living their best life even though they are living outside and I and I say it when I say it like that it still sounds like a judgment and I apologize for it that's my own bias but you can do it you can play recall our games with that dog absolutely I've had people who have done it with Street dogs in India they've been joined our program just so that they can enrich the lives of Street dogs it can happen is five two is five years old too old to train uh agility that's a great question we get you know is five years old too old to train anything so the answer is no five years old is not too old to train agility the the biggest part of agility the biggest benefit to agility is this this connection you get with your dog and so you can get that deeper connection you might take the next 18 months to two years working through all the layers of all the
