I am going to teach you the hand target, sometimes called the nose target, because the dog's nose is touching your hand. Now, why on earth would you need that? Three big reasons why I love this behavior, and I believe every single dog owner on the planet should have it. Let's say your dog, you're out and about, and your dog gets a little bit alerted. What's that over there? You can put your hand target down, brings the dog's focus away from what's out there, back towards you, and you can then back out of the picture. Second reason I love it is because it's a great way to change your dog's physiology. Now, why would you want to do that? Because it injects more joy into what you're doing. When we get the dog doing something that's a simple, simple behavior that they know has a history of immense reinforcement, it instantly changes their groove. It's a great building block for tricks, like a spin in one direction or a twirl in the other direction, because your hand becomes a target. Okay, let's get with the training.
