호르몬의 영향을 받기 시작하는 강아지들을 보게 될지도 모릅니다. 그리고 팟캐스트 217화에서, 제가 자기 조절 능력에 대해 이야기했었는데, 강아지들의 사춘기를 다룰 때는 완전히 새로운 국면을 맞이하게 됩니다. 생후 6개월이 넘은 시점이죠. 사춘기 단계는 6개월에서 18개월까지 이어지며, 강아지들은 몸속에서 솟구치는 이 모든 호르몬에 대처하는 법을 배우게 될 것입니다. 아마 예방 접종을 몇 차례 받았을 텐데, 그 또한 행동 변화에 영향을 줄 수 있습니다. 그리고 만약 여러분이 반려견에게 벼룩이나 진드기 방지용 바르는 살충제 같은 것을 사용하는 타입이라면, 영양 상태나 다른 여러 요인과 마찬가지로 그것 또한 반려견에게 영향을 미칠 수 있습니다. 그래서 여러분은 변화를 목격하게 될 것입니다. 이때 사람들은 '아, 우리 개가 변했어'라거나, '우리 개가 버릇없어졌어'라고 생각하곤 하죠. 아니요, 강아지들에게 더 엄격한 훈육이 필요한 게 아닙니다. 그저 여러분이 스스로에게 투자한 시간을 돌아보고 기대치를 조정해야 할 뿐입니다. 여러분의 교육 수준은 어떤가요? 얼마나 배우셨나요? 단순히 블로그 게시물이나 가끔 보는 유튜브, 혹은 답을 찾으러 유튜브를 뒤지는 정도로 배우고 계신가요? 그건 반려견에게 공평하지 않습니다. 강아지에게 공평하지 않아요. 저는 항상 수강생들에게 말합니다. 보호자가 똑똑해질수록 반려견의 행동도 더 좋아진다고요. 그러니 여러분은 그만한 투자가 필요합니다. 기대치, 기술, 환경, 그리고 반려견의 의지까지 말이죠. 반려견은 여러분에게 이렇게 말할 겁니다. '부엌에서 치즈 한 조각을 꺼낼 때 사춘기인 제가 당신 말을 잘 들을 순 있죠. 하지만 밖에 나가 다른 개들이 있을 때는 못 해요. 제 기능을 못 한다고요.' 보시다시피, 이건 개 탓이 아닙니다. 강아지들은 항상 최선을 다하고 있어요. 저는 여러분이 그 사실을 이해하는 게 매우 중요하다고 생각합니다. 마지막 단계로 넘어가면, 18개월부터 대략 3세 정도까지 반려견은 비로소 성견이 됩니다. 18개월이 되면 겉모습은 다 자란 것처럼 보일지 몰라도요. 그 이후로는 크게 성장하지 않을 수도 있습니다. 하지만 정서적, 정신적으로는 여전히 갈 길이 멀었습니다. 그러니 '이제는 더 잘 알겠지'와 같은 기대를 하지 마세요. 그들은 성견입니다. 신체적으로는 그렇게 보일지 몰라도, 온전한 성견이 되기까지는 아직 갈 길이 멉니다. 자, 이제 여러분의 반려견을 생각할 때, 지금 반려견이 어느 발달 단계에 있든 간에, 여러분이 반려견을 훌륭한 반려견으로 키우기 위해 필요한 기술 훈련과, 반려견의 정서적 안정을 위한 컨디셔닝에 시간을 투자해야 한다는 점을 생각해야 합니다. 그래야만 긍정적인 CER, 즉 긍정적인 조건화된 정서 반응을 형성할 수 있기 때문입니다. 반려견이 가야 하는 환경, 예를 들어 동물병원이나 미용실 같은 곳에서도 말이죠. 반려견에게 '네, 발톱 손질을 받을게요'라고 말할 수 있는 기회를 주어야 합니다.
You might see some puppies starting to deal with hormones. And in podcast episode 217, where I talk about being able to self-regulate, this is a new ball game when we're dealing with our puppies' adolescents. They're over six months old. The adolescent stage goes from six months to 18 months, and they're going to learn how to deal with all these hormones rushing through their bodies. They've probably had a couple of vaccines and that can affect behavior change as well. And if you're of the type that uses things like topical pesticides on your dogs for fleas or tick, that could also have effects on your dog as well as nutrition and all these other things. So, you're going to see changes. And this is where people think, oh, my dog has changed, or my dog has become a brat, or my dog. No, they don't need to have the firmer hand of God on them. They just need your expectations to look at the time that you've put in on yourself. What is your education? How much have you learned? Are you learning just through blog posts and the odd YouTube or surfing YouTube for answers? That is not fair to your dog. That is not fair to your puppy. You know, I always tell my students, the smarter you become, the better behavior dogs become. And so, you need that investment. Expectations, skill, environment, and the dog's will. The dog will show you, oh, I can listen to you all you want as an adolescent in the kitchen when you're opening a slice of cheese. But outside when there's other dogs, I can't. I can't function. And you see, it's not the dog's fault. They're always doing the best they can. I think it's super important that you understand that. We move to our final stage, which is from 18 months to anywhere around three years that that dog is finally mature. 18 months, they may look their physical height, and they may not grow substantially after that. But emotionally and mentally, there is still a long way for them to go. So, please don't have the expectations. Be like, they should know better now. They are an adult dog. They might physically look like one, but they are a long way from being that adult dog. Now, when you think of your own dog, whatever stage of development that they are in right now, you've got to think about the training of both the skills you want for them to be an amazing family pet and the emotional well-being conditioning that you need to put in time so that you are building positive CERs, positive conditioned emotional responses to environments that they need to go to, including the veterinarian or maybe the groomers. They need to be given the opportunity to say,

yes, I want my nails done. And no dog that I know of is born that way. You have to grow your education to put in the time to help that dog, no matter what stage they are, to grow not just behaviors. It's not just about coming when called and bringing you the paper. And it's not just about whatever sport you want to play. It's about putting that dog's emotional well-being first. Yeah.
