강아지를 머물게 할 공간이 필요합니다. 그러니 크레이트 하나, 혹은 그 이상, 울타리(X-pen) 하나, 혹은 그 이상이 필요하죠. 이건 아주 중요한 문제입니다. 집 안에서 보호자 없이 너무 많은 자유를 주는 건 좋지 않습니다. 그래서 강아지에게 온 집안을 마음대로 돌아다닐 자유를 다 주게 되면, 씹지 말아야 할 것들을 씹게 될 것이고, 심지어는 전선까지 씹을 수도 있습니다. 부적절한 장소에 배변 실수를 할 수도 있고요. 앞으로 우리가 꿈꾸는 반려견으로 성장하는 데 전혀 도움이 되지 않는 나쁜 습관들을 반복해서 배우게 될지도 모릅니다. 물론 강아지도 밖으로 나와 탐색할 시간이 필요하지만, 그건 보호자가 무엇을 하는지 지켜보는 감독 하에 이루어져야 합니다.
We need a place to house our puppy. So a crate or maybe more than one crate, a X-pen or maybe more than one X-pen. This is a biggie. This is just way too much unsupervised freedom in a house. So if the puppy has all this freedom to roam wherever they want in the house, they're going to chew things that maybe they shouldn't be, including possibly an electric cord. They may pee or poop in inappropriate places. They may learn to rehearse habits that are not going to help you to have the puppy of your dreams down the road. Yes, they need time to be out and about and explore, but that's supervised with you watching what they're doing.
