In 2012, I got a puppy, Nico, to add to my two females. At first, everything seemed fine, but I started to notice quirks with him and so did other people. Once someone asked me if he had autism. I didn't even know dogs could get autism. I was incensed she would even suggest it. Nico is just a gentle soul that does not like commotion, vagueness, or confusion. Nico's anxiety grew as he got older because my working line dope needed a job. He began smiling, which I knew was an appeasement gesture, and it broke my heart. One night in a group class, Nico finally broke and decided to run around, completely shut down. I decided that performance sports would not be. Embarrassed, on the verge of tears, I left the class immediately and Nico went on the shelf for five years. During 2020 COVID, after the unexpected deaths of both my females, Nico and I found ourselves alone, stuck at home, and a bit depressed. We needed something to do. I found Recallers. In Recallers, I've learned how to communicate with him in the quiet, calm manner he needs, allowing him to make choices, work the problem, learn through successes, and use his abilities that exercise the working brain that have been grossly understimulated. By teaching me the importance of patience, clarity in training, and a quiet urgency, I can support Nico's continued learning. Recallers is also teaching me how learning works in dogs. What I didn't realize about my previous dogs was they were very forgiving to my misdoings as a handler and trainer. They had resilience to my frustration and an innate ability to figure out what I wanted when I was unable to communicate. Unfortunately, I equated their successes in performance sport as a reflection on my training ability when, in fact, I really should tip my hat to them. I think the most profound lesson that I've taken from Recallers is the joy in the possibilities. Five years ago, I quit a loving, intelligent, gentle Doberman because I was lost. And although I can't have that time back, thanks to Recallers, we're spending every day uncovering new adventures that at one time I never thought possible. Now I'm the one smiling from delight and amazement at what he's accomplished and where we're going together. Thank you, Recallers.
