Hey everybody. Good Sunday afternoon. It's 12 days of gift giving. And I think we're officially into the 12 days. I think we're well into the 12 days. So today I have a question of the day. Oh, check out this beautiful mug. Are you a fan of the podcast? Are you a, are you part of Shaper Nation? Shaper Nation, giving away a insulated coffee mug as part of what's going on today. Okay. Let me know if you're on, let me know who's out there, where are you from? And I'm going to share the question that I have for you today. It's a bit of a long one. So take your time. It's like, I'm putting you in a scenario and you need to tell me your response. Here we go. Hi Gladys, Texas Hill. Beautiful. It's beautiful. It's beautiful up here. It's a little bit chilly, but it's beautiful here. Waterloo representing in the house. Okay guys, you know, I do get a little excited when the local people local to me, you know, give a shout out because it's not often that that happens. But I I'm still thrilled that I see Brazil and Austria and the UK are here. Scotland are all on here. Michigan, California, Cornwall, Delaware. Okay. This is exciting. Here's the question. I would like you to put yourself in this scenario. And what, what brought this to my mind? And I'm going to share where you can go. I had a live this morning where, um, it, you know, I, I took a chance. I let Tater do something that I knew he really wanted to do. And then I took a chance on a live stream. I'm live. And I, and I did a recall and I knew there was very little chance that he was going to come back when he was called and he didn't clip cliffhanger. So my question to, and we've got Norway and more from Ontario hot springs. Oh, it's that cool than hot springs. Are you kidding me? You need to change the name then. Um, Minnesota, Utah, Northern Alberta and the Czech Republic and Calgary in the house. Okay. Here's the scenario you're out in the woods or you're out walking your dog. And, um, it's a secure area. It's a conservation area. And so it's not, there's not a danger of your dog being hit by a car or anything. When suddenly your dog spies a rabbit jumps into the forest and goes and you call him and you get nothing. So what do you do next? Put it in the comments. Let me know. Also put in the comments. What are you thinking feel or feeling? Cause that's really a part of it. Denmark. It's like, what do I, did I, Poland, did I just name, like I, what am I up to 20 different countries that are on here? That would be interesting. Find that one out. Somebody on my team will add them all up. Um, okay. So tell me, Amy says,

I make a loud noise and I run the other way. Okay. That's great. Amy. I also want you to put, what are you feeling or thinking? I yell this way, which is my dog's cue to change direction on a long line and go the opposite direction. Usually she spins and follows me. Uh, I love that. Uh, right. I don't know how to say your name. Rye Wellen. I I'm feeling fear and my stomach drops. Yeah. Uh, start training impulse control is what you're thinking. Great. Feeling frustrated. I love the honesty. I was a hundred percent vulnerable when I did my Instagram live this morning, another country, Portugal in the house. Beautiful. And so I love, love, love that you are there. You're, you're being vulnerable with me here. I'm feeling afraid. I'm feeling frustrated. Um, okay. Knowing the dog will not come back. I will not call him. I simply give chase into the briar to get him back. Um, also I find a place to hold and wait. It it's going to be a while. Yep. That's great. I would, I probably wouldn't chase. I might make a weird noise and run the opposite way. If you, if you watch and listen to my podcast, you will, that's, that has happened. Um, stay put with my stomach in knots. Yep. Feel disappointed, but I also know that I've over faced him by taking him there. Slight panic, starting, uh, to wave my arms, disappointed in myself. Uh, Chesnia. Wow. I call the word that is fun and emergencies and I am scared. I like it. Emma H 360. Woo. Woo. Way to represent. Make sure I have tall boots on and go in after I'm feeling disappointed. I freak out on the inside and I try to stay calm and call his name. Panicked. I get frustrated. I'm thinking, Oh, Judy. Oh, love your honesty. Just poison my recall word. Uh, I go after her and not sure that after, I mean, this has happened to us here with tater salad and he's gone and there is no sight of them. Like, so I will call once and, um, and then it's like this, there's no sight of them. You are giving him permission to ignore your recall. If you keep calling, right. Scream and fall to the floor. Worry about, uh, but sure they want to make sure I'm okay rather than anything else. Yep. That's a great, uh, great plan. Hi from Holland. Wow. I love, I love these answers for sure. I do not call again. Good going Paschali. Try another word to get his attention. If nothing happens, I start feeling stressed. I run towards him. And again, usually he will come back. Uh, I've have a nice piece of chicken. I yell prompt, run the opposite way with a high voice. So lots of variations. And I guess it makes sense to me that

the, um, that the people who are going to jump on a live when they see Susan Garrett is on a live are not going to, you know, say, feel like you little turd of a dog. I'm going to kick you in the butt when I see you again and blah, blah, blah. Um, and it's okay. If you feel that way, a hundred percent. Okay. Right. Um, I lay on the ground and squeak. Um, if your dog's in full hunt with a rabbit, depending on the breed of dog that may or may not have any effect. Um, moment of panic, call him by his name, raise my hand and say here. Okay. A lot of great, a great suggestions. A lot of great suggestions. Is there a right answer? Well, Wendy, that's a great question. I think that it depends on how the dogs were trained. Now, if it was one of my dogs, one of my dogs who have been born and raised with me, I have no doubt that they would come back. They might, I might say their name and, and I might have to like that saying their name, make it them to stop. And then I might have to say this way, you know what you had, I'm glad you stopped. And now we're going this way with tater. It depends how far away he is from me when he sees that squirrel in runs. And if it's a chipmunk, he won't come back. And so I won't try. And he's been with us for two years. Is it better? I wouldn't say it's a, I'd say it's more than a hundred percent better, like 500% better. Is it perfect? No. Could it be better than it is? Absolutely. We just don't put any work into it. Kim and I don't put work into that because at this point, he's so good. The little things that we can work on, we can, we'll, can be more patient and work on them over time. And if we were going out off the property to an environment that was like a conservation area, we wouldn't take them off leash. We just know that it's not worth the risk. All my other dogs, I'd have zero problem. I have had my dogs. I remember we were, Linda was just here and just left. I don't remember what country we were in. It might've been Finland. We were there for the world championships and, or yeah, I think it was Finland. And I had my dog off leash and two of my, my teammates had their dogs on leash. Linda had her golden retriever and another friend of mine had a border collie. I had my border collie off leash. And I'm like, what are, what are these big, we see these like a whole carpet of, it looked like cobblestones. What they were, was rabbit turds. There was that many rabbits. They were rabbit turds. We get up over Hill and their hairs, they're monsters. Right. And they just start scattering. And the dogs are like, holy crap,

this is wonderland. And my, you know, all the dogs lunge forward and encore is the only one off leash. So she lunges. I said on, we're going this way. Boom. Oh, okay. That's not important. That's the kind of, of recall. I want. That's the kind of recall. I get, I had the same kind of recall with my Jack Russell terriers. It's not because they're border collies because guess what? I know a heck of a lot of border collies that have zero recall when they are fixated on chasing something, but it's, it's just a given for me because it's the most important thing for me. So that is what I train the most. And I put a ton of work in when I get a new puppy or a rescue dog, and I don't give them freedom until I know it's great. So they don't rehearse chasing animals. And so with my puppy, this, she wasn't off lead, um, with other animals around. She was especially bad chasing dogs until I would say close to a year old and she makes great choices. I can call her off or anything right now. Okay. So if you get a chance and you would like to learn more about that, you can go to my Instagram. I put a post with the live where Tater did not listen this morning. And then I did a series of stories that I put into a, I don't know what they're called album of some sort. Um, you know, was this a bad idea? I put as a professional dog trainer, there are two things that I can do on social media. I can show you how to teach sit down stay, or I could share with you. We're doing something. Not a lot of people in this world are doing. We are training our dogs without physical punishment, without intimidation. And so the best thing I could do for you is to be vulnerable and show you what to do when your dog doesn't do what you want them to do, because anyone can teach you how to train a dog with a cookie, but who can teach you what to do in the moments the dog isn't doing what you want. And so if you go to my Instagram page, you can see exactly what happened, what I did. And then I took them for another walk and how I put in the training and set them up for the exact same kind of recall. And he came back in the exact same place. Okay. So today we're talking about empathy. And for me, I don't know, this is like a chicken and an egg for me. What comes first, empathy or humility? If you have empathy, it's easier to be humble. And if you are humble, it's easier to be empathetic. So if you, in dog training, I think this is so important. So if you, if you, we can share this to our, Christine, you said you're not Instagram. We can share this to

our Facebook page. And I know my team will do it in a blog somewhere. So you can see it at some point. So if empathy is the ability to understand and relate to the feelings of an animal or a person, it's supposed to be a person probably, but an animal in this case, in dog training and humility is to downplay your own self-worth and to have a humble heart. I believe those two ingredients are so important when you are a coaching human beings and be wanting to train dogs in a program that does not resort to physical punishment, choke chains, pinch collars, electric collars, you know, multiple timeouts. So if you don't want to do that, then empathy and humility are critical because dog training is all about the assumptions or the meanings you give to any situation. For example, your dog runs off. Now you, you call them and your dog doesn't come. And you could say you, I shouldn't swear on this because, you know, I know kids like to watch my lives and parents like to share these, my lives with their kids. So you little rotten egg, you know better. And when you make the assumptions that the dog is consciously choosing to defy you, your blood gets going. And what that does, let's talk about the changes biochemically in you, your car cortisol goes up, everything starts escalating. It's not healthy guys. You are blaming and judging. And when you get ahold of that dog, are you going to be kind? Oh, heck no. You're going to be, you know what? And so when you catch up with that dog or when the dog finally decides to come back, they're going to see you with steam coming out of your ears and you aren't going to be kind and you may not like physically correct them, but you may be, they'll know, they'll know they did wrong. They know that you're upset. How does that serve the dog wanting to come back the next time? How does that serve your relationship with your dog? There's this great quote I'm going to share with you from, um, from, uh, um, Wayne Dyer. So first, let me just say, I'm going to, before I share the quote, I'm going to share this mantra, which I developed because I am a big fan of Dr. The late Dr. Wayne Dyer. And I believe he said something very similar to this about people. And so it's been my mantra for dogs for, I don't know, a long time that I, my assumption is the dog who runs off and chases a rabbit and doesn't come back when we call them that dog's doing the best that, that, that dog can with the education that we've currently given them in the environment that we put them in. So would tater salad come back if there's no rabbit?

Absolutely. Would tater salad come back if there's no motivator to do? Absolutely. What about, you know, would he come back when there is a rabbit? Some of the time, I would say probably 75, maybe even 80% of the time. So w w when I know that it's not perfect, I look at, is it the education or is it the environment? And quite often as a common combination of both, you haven't given them enough education to have a knee jerk reaction because when they see a rabbit, it's not a conscious thought it's a, it's an, it's a trained reaction. So, um, to come back, it's an innate reaction to chase. And what we want is to change the trigger. When you see rabbit go and you hear me, you turn this way. So we once the, the, uh, innate response to chase kicks in, if we haven't put any training in that teaches them how to override that, are they being bad? No, because it isn't conscious thought. It isn't them going, I hear her coming, but too bad for her. It's not a conscious thought. It's just an innate response. So we have to create a better education in a less, in a less, um, distracted environment, get the responses we want and start adding distractions a little bit at a time. So this goes back to this great quote from, um, Wayne Dyer. If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. I love this quote. There's an, I mean, you want to spend a, you want to spend a good hour of your time. Just Google Dr. Wayne Dyer quotes. And there's probably, I don't know, three, five, 10 pages of amazing inspirational quotes that you will find. Um, because he's just, he's a, you know, he's a legend. I've got, I've got every one of his books and I've read every one of his books. I actually listened to them on tape. Two of them, I've actually read and listened to. Okay. So when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change, when you change the way that you look at dog training, that the dog isn't being spiteful or stubborn, but the dog is doing the best they can, then possibilities come up for you. It changes that it's the same with people. Those of you who are coaching people, this is the biggest lesson I learned in my journey as a dog trainer. I've always looked at, I've always looked through at life through the eyes of a dog. If I see somebody walking down the street with a dog, something happens in me. I immediately look out at the dogs through the dog's eyes always. And what, that's just who I've always been. And what pain that has caused me is if I see that dog being mistreated,

I go all spider monkey on that person. Now, not complete strangers. I tend to look away, but if I am, if I am coaching you and you do something that is in my mind, I'm looking through the eyes of your dog, confusing and hurtful, and you blame the dog and get mad at them. I used to go all spider monkey on that person. And it took a number of years for me to realize the impact I was having on the people that I was driving them further and further away from the way I wanted them to see dog training, because I wasn't exemplifying the kind of person I wanted them to be to their dog. I wasn't exemplifying that to them. And so if you're coaching people, you've got to recognize when you're being triggered and being triggered in a way that you are judging a human. And you've got to come up with a way. I have a word that I use that allows me to go to a, you know, kind of like a self check-in. I don't want, I don't want to respond that way because I don't want to push people away from being kind to their dogs. And I don't want my body to, to experience all these hormones and stress hormones every time I'm coaching somebody that that's not good for my longevity as a coach. Right? Do you guys follow this? Does this make sense to you? Are you, are you catching this? I recognize this is a journey and where, wherever you are now, it's may be tough for you to, I don't get it all. Just try and get one thing. Just try and get one thing that you are doing that you can change and every day add to that. Okay. So that you are bringing empathy, compassion, and humility into every interaction you have with your dogs and with other people, no matter what, you know, it doesn't matter if somebody is being unkind to you on, on social media. A, what are you doing reading crap on social media? I mean, read inspiring things on social media. Don't go down the drama holes. Don't go down the vague booking holes. And if people are being unkind to you, as Wayne Dyer says, that just defines them. The way people talk about you or treat you defines them. How you respond to that defines you. So if you define, if you're, if you respond to it in a way that you go, okay, I'm going to remember you in my prayers, because clearly you're a hurt person and you just move on and don't give it any power is different than you saying, you think I mean to dogs. There was somebody who wrote a quote, somebody I really, really looked up to and respected in the world of dog agility. And she wrote this on social media about me. Clearly Susan doesn't love her dogs.

Shaped by dog. Shaped by dog. Shaped by dog.
She just uses them as a means to an end in the sport that she can compete with. Most hurtful thing anybody has ever said about me because it couldn't be more wrong. And so I'm like, how, like, are you going to be mad? Are you going to give that statement power? Are you going to look at what are you doing that would give somebody that idea? And, um, you know, the person I need to be true to are my dogs. Somebody else's opinion of me is none of my business. And so no matter what, if you're being bullied and, uh, unfortunately in the world of dogs, it's a, it's a big thing because people ego, ego is high when humility is, is, is low. And what we need to do is when ego is high, the impact of our words isn't important. We need to get ego low and, and humility high, right? What, what somebody else thinks of you is really none of your business. Okay. So all of that, I promise you will help you to approach dog trainer, dog training, accumulating all those words that we've said in the past few weeks, being joyful and happy. Um, you want, you want to make sure that you're doing what's best for you so that you can grow as a human. And I think that's where our dogs come in. Shaped by dog is the truth, right? Shaped by dog. Okay. I want to give away some prizes. Shaped by dog. So here's, here's what we are going to do. Look at this. I love this. Shaped by dog. So my friends at for my murals, they have these amazing, they're even better than this. This is a great insulated, um, coffee cup. Uh, but what they've got now it's, um, am I allowed to say it's a knockoff of something that sounds like Shetty? Okay. That's what I'm saying. It's a knockoff of something that sounds like Shetty is made in the same company that the Shetty mugs are made in. Um, and it's got shamed by dog. It's engraved on it. I'm going to give away one of those, um, today. So yesterday I said, if what I was talking about is something that resonates with you, please share it in your social media. And I'm going to say that to you today. So right now I see what some of you have done and what I would like you to do is I'd like you to, if what I'm talking about resonates with the kind of person you want to be for your dogs, for the kind of person you want to show up as in this world. And I believe that's us dialing in our higher self. If that's, if that resonates with you, then please number one, like this video, because that lets social media know this kind of dog training needs to be shared. So number one, please like, or heart it. Let's have

some hearts out there. Number two, share it on your own social media page. And if you've got three, like if you're in Twitter and Facebook and Instagram, then share it on all three and then come back here. And when you share it, tell people, what was your big takeaway from this? This is how Susan really connected with me. And then tell people why they should come and watch it. Come back to the comments and write shared. And then tomorrow, tomorrow, I'm going to come back here at one o'clock and I'm going to do another live and I'm going to do another draw. But today giving away two prizes. Why? Because it was empathy and humility. So I'm like, had to have two prizes. I don't know how I ended up, you know what it was, uh, whatever, you know, God, the universe, the higher being. When I looked at my list of what's today's word of the day, check it out. I had written two Sundays. Nobody on my team caught that. I didn't catch it. The universe wanted us to have empathy and humility as the word, and they go hand in hand. So if you write down, you shared it on, if you shared it in two places, right? Shared times two. If you wrote shared it in three places, right? Shared times three. And then you're going to be in the draw for tomorrow. But for today, I'm going to check in with my team and I'm going to see what the number of people who shared yesterday was. And I'm going to create our little, uh, random, uh, okay. Where have I gone with you guys? Boom. Uh, okay. So we got a random generator. I'm going to open this up. What is today's number? Today's number is I think it is 74. 74 is today's number, which means like I'm giving away two prizes today. So you have like one in 36 or seven chance of winning today. Right? So here's how we're going to do it. I'm going to blow this up. I'm going to share my screen. So you guys can see we're all on the up and up and I'm going to do this twice. Cause we're going to get two numbers. This is from yesterday. Share my screen. Uh, yesterday's number was 74. I wish you guys could hear the, the, um, if I put my earphones up to the microphone, you can hear the dorky music that they put with this. All right. I'm going to put my earphones up to the microphone. See if you guys can hear this. Let me know if you can hear it this time. Okay. Here we're going to generate. Could you hear it that time? Number 52 is our first prize. I'm going to do this again. And if it comes up with 52, you win both prizes. Here we go. And number three, you can hear it. That's hysterical. You know what? It's a little things in life. I,

I, I just love to laugh. And so that little dorky, it's just so funny. Okay. So we are going to find out and actually what's going to happen is my team is going to post the two names of the people who won the first person that I, I shared will win the sounds like the, the Shetty mug and a with shaped by dogs and graved on it. And to, I crack myself up G all the time. And the second person, what you're going to win. Check this out. You're winning a propel. Absolutely. Giving away a propel. Okay. Now it is such fun, but listen, here's the thing. I I love talking dog training. I love teaching people. And that's why we are putting, we put together a big, what we call our cyber event. Cyber event is on now. This is your chance to be in the craziness. That is the world of Susan Garrett for a year as an online student. And it doesn't matter where you are in your dog training. It doesn't matter if you've got a 10 year old dog. It doesn't matter if you're doing agility. It doesn't here. I'm going to share one of our students who wrote something about this was about handling 360. Eve wrote, I didn't join because it was, I didn't want to join because it was so much money. And I will admit compared to other online agility programs, it looks like handling 360 is a large investment, but that's because it's six programs in one. However, now I have a dog who is so well-trained. She says my, I think she wants to say, but regularly while running full out on course, I wouldn't trade that feeling for any amount of money. It's teamwork. It's getting results. Number one is a family pet. How do I have amazingly well-trained agility dogs, dogs that every single dog I've ever owned, every single dog I've ever owned has been a world champion or a Canadian national champion. That's from 1998 was the first dog I owned all the way up till now with the exception of momentum, because with COVID, I just didn't compete with her. All right. So every single dog, it's not a fluke because success leaves clues. And that's what I want. It starts as how do I get that? It starts by having a hundred percent focus on the thing we talked about at the beginning of today, having an amazing recall, having an amazingly well-trained family pet, because the time they spend in the agility ring is a slice of a very small, small piece of the timeline that they're with us as a family pet. So that's always my focus. Have an amazing family pet who is also a world-class agility dog. You may not want the world-class agility dog, but the programs

그럼 어떻게 시작할까요? dogsat.com/cyber로 가세요. 그렇지 않으면 dogsat.com/cyber로 가서 등록하세요.
we have details to get the, whatever your goals are, you set them for yourself. Okay. So how do you get there? Go to dogsat.com forward slash cyber. All right. Cyber. And I'm sure that you see people in here that are commenting because they've been on our programs and they know. So, you know, I love handling 360. I love recallers. It works for anybody in all walks of life. It works for the, it doesn't, isn't specific about a breed of dog or that you have a puppy, but if you have a puppy, this is the time to start, start working at it. This is the time to start establishing what that, that empathetic relationship is. Empathy. I want to be really clear. Empathy doesn't mean the dog can do what they want. Empathy doesn't mean there are no rules in life, but rules are applied and maintained in a way that is clear and fair. And the dog wants to play by those rules. It's different. It's completely different than I told you what I wanted and then you didn't do it. And now you're in trouble. It's not, you're in trouble, right? There's the, what's the biggest difference that I've noticed in training this way. And I've been training this way since 1993, all in since 96, but gradually evolving in 1993. What's the biggest difference is the dog's personalities shine. They aren't afraid to show us who they are. There's no, there's no holding back. And you see you, people who visit my home, they say, Oh man, all your dogs have so much personality. It's because they're allowed to be who they are. And I just look at the dog who they are. And I adopt the program based on maybe tater salad needs more work with driving to me with distractions where my border collies need more work to me driving to me with motion. Right? So it's just something that you, you work towards. Okay. Okay. I'm going to share some of these. Maria wrote, I'm working recallers with my 10 year old dog. That's awesome. Maria thought our connection was good before, but it's improving since joining. And this is the thing, 10 years old, Maria, first of all, I want to celebrate that you are honoring your 10 year old dog. I can't tell you the number of people that I've said, Oh, my dog's older. My dog's 10. Yeah. She's, I don't do much with her. No, they still have this spirit. They want to be part of our life. So good on you, Maria. You might be joining recallers for your eight month old, but you've got a 12 year old that you can play the same games with. That's the, that's the most awesome thing. Okay. If you guys have any questions, leave them here. Otherwise I'm going to sign up dogs at.com forward slash cyber.

모드, dogsat.com/cyber로 가보세요. '캔 터치 디스(Can't touch this)'는 아니니까요.
At least go over there and watch the video that explains what program I think would be best suited for you and your dog. And, and there's like, there's a, um, if them, then that decision tree that you can work through and decide which one would be great. Oh, Danielle. That's awesome. Danielle wrote. I'm doing recallers with my 13, 12 and eight year old dogs. I, I have a special spot in my heart for older dogs. I just do. Christian wrote before playing Susan's games with my dog, he would run away constantly. Now he's fabulous family dog who stays around doing really good in agility. And I'm just going to brag on Christian, um, because she might not brag on herself. Tell, okay. I'm not going to let you do it. Christian, tell them the breed of dog that you have because, oh yeah, that sounds good. Her dog doesn't run away and it's does agility. Woo hoo. I'm not going to, I'm not going to spill the beans. Kristen, you tell them, um, new rescue. Where do I start? Okay. Mod go to dogs at.com forward slash cyber. And what you do is you watch that video. My hallucination is you'll probably be best served in recallers. That's where we started with, with, um, tater salad. Okay. Check it out. I didn't want to spill the beans, but Kristen is talking about a Siberian Husky that used to run away all the time. Hello. When you get a Siberian Husky, that's what they will tell you. Don't expect them ever to come back because when they get a chance to run, they'll do that. That's what they're bred for. As if that's an excuse for them. Kristen's doing amazing job with her dog, Zeus, not just coming back when you're called, but like crazy good and agility. It's just so much fun. So much fun to watch. Okay. I think I saw a winner's names. Okay. You, you gave me the winner's names. Uh, I'm going to check now because I, I got down the rabbit hole of, okay. All right. First winner. Who's going to win a amazing cup with engraving on it from, um, a good friends at for my morals. It goes to Dawn Holloman Harrington, Dawn contact us, uh, at wag at dogs at.com. And the second goes to, this is getting the propel goes to MC Madlock. Not, not to be confused with MC hammer. Can't touch this. All right. Okay guys, I'm getting silly now, so I'm going to jump off and thank you so much for this. Come back tomorrow, 1 PM. And if you haven't done so please like and share this video and, and come back and join us tomorrow for our new word of the day and my feelings on where that fits into my life with dogs. I'll see you then. Thank you guys.
