Like changing your dog's behavior by playing a game that they love and you love. It doesn't make sense that this would be better, more constructive dog training than going to a class and doing your sit down, stand, come, right? But you're seeing a difference. the fact that one of the things we've heard from many of you is seeing how this is working with my dog, I feel bad about what I did before. And that is not healthy energy for you. Because guess what? If we had 20, 20 vision, if we had a crystal ball, we wouldn't make any mistakes anywhere in our life. It's not healthy to have any regrets. Our dogs don't benefit by it. And certainly you don't benefit by it. So you've got to give yourself grace and say, all right, I get it. Things are different. I'm okay with that. This is a journey dog. I believe our dogs take us on this journey that help us to ascend to be the best, best kind of people we can be. And so that is, you've got to be 100% okay with that. Handouts, step-by-step instruction are so helpful. I have ADHD and I've been able to follow. Danielle, fellow ADHD-er, it's all right. We all, like some people really don't benefit from the PDFs. They really benefit from the videos, which is why both of them are so very, very detailed. And so, I'm going to be able to do that. Okay. Oh, getting my pup June 10th. The challenge is that we have two big programs that we coach people in and that is Homeschool the Dog and Recallers. We have an agility program with other coaches, but Homeschool the Dog and Recallers. So if we were to give lifetime access, we would want people to make sure that they're getting the mechanics right, that they're getting feedback. And so that's why we take the season of nuance, we put it into Recallers, we coach people in there. That's what we do. My husband sabotaged everything I do. I went on vacation to see my mom. I came back last Saturday. Now my training again, impulsive control barking eating habits. You know what? Here's the really cool thing about dog training. The dog understands there's two sets of rules. It would be great if your husband could be inspired by watching your progress to say, well, maybe I'd like to play that game as well. But super important. It's all about connection. We don't want the connection between you and your husband

to have any friction in it because you want to train a dog a certain way and he's not on board yet. Because if that creates friction, then that's going to push you to further apart where the dogs are concerned. And so what we want to do is say, it is what it is. You know, I can't control what other people do any more than I can control what my dog can do. All I can do is inspire. And so I'm going to inspire my dog and my dog will learn with me. These are the rules and learn different rules with my husband. And possibly, you can't expect it, but possibly your husband might be inspired to want to know more. Oops, I have to get rid of that first. Sorry. What, if you were to use one word or a couple of words to describe your relationship with your dog while training. So how, what is the word? When you think of training your dog, last night session, yesterday session, in class, your last in class session, what is a word or words you would use to describe?

So little and bond, I say engaged. Sally says connected. There are two recaller students back to back. They were both really good answers. NSYNC is another one. Be hopeful. That's great. Be honest. You are in a safe place here. You can 100% express your opinion. Engaged, focused, playful, joyful, and goofy. I love it. Proud, wonderful connection, laughing. That's what I want to see. Engaged, joyful. Any of you sitting there thinking, that's not how my training goes. You're welcome to put anything different. Hopeful that these little things are going to add up. If you're in the season of nuance, I promise you that they will. Inquisitive. They're really smart, but I'm inconsistent. 100% okay. Having so much fun. Okay. Sally says frustrated. Sometimes we're frustrated in our training and that is okay too. That doesn't make you a bad person because you're frustrated with your dog training. Is it Kim? Kim sometimes gets a little frustrated. Anticipating. A little less focused because I have three dogs. That's okay. You can be focused on when you're training. Occasionally frustrated when my mechanics aren't good, but videoing helps. Oh, Lisa. That's music to my ears. Music to my ears. So you can see that. I can see the people who are recaller students, but honestly, sometimes I'm frustrated. Sometimes I'm connected and that's the way it will be. The really cool thing. I remember when I used to say this line, our dogs are a reflection of our ability to train dogs. People will get so angry, cranky with me about saying that. They're saying, you're just making people feel bad about themselves because it's easier to say, my dog is a brat. My dog is nippy. My dog is barky. My dog blows me off. My dog is stubborn. It's easier to say that because then we don't feel bad about ourselves. I don't want anyone to feel bad about yourselves. That's not what you hear. I think the line, our dogs are a reflection of our ability to train dogs should be inspiring. It should be inspiring. Just like I believe that my students are a reflection of my ability to train dog training concepts. So if you going through the season of nuance as my student and our coaches, our coaches, students, if you aren't getting the outcomes, I said you were going to get, I'm not saying, well, you're a bunch of duffers. Like, oh, you're lazy. You're uninspired. You're not putting in the work. No, I say those students are a reflection of my ability to teach. Therefore, how can I change our online program to inspire people to take action? How can I change the lessons that I'm teaching so they get the outcomes they're supposed to? You see what I mean? I don't feel bad about myself.

If people don't get the outcome, I go, all right. So this worked for everybody with a Labrador, a Yorkshire Terrier, a golden doodle, a Pomeranian. But for some reason, I wasn't getting the same results with people with a Whippet. Well, what can I change? What motivates Whippets? And so that's how we've tweaked our programs so that we have beagles, we have coonhounds, we have you name it. So we have a lot of people who are doing it. The program didn't start out like it is today. It's improved to the level it is because myself and our coaches take ownership of your reflection of our ability to teach both in the PDFs that we provide for you, the details in the videos, the way that we answer your questions and engage you. It's no good that we have a phenomenal dog training program. If we can't inspire you to take action and you will never take action if you are feeling bad about yourself because you haven't done enough today. I didn't train my dog enough today. So the first thing we have to do is get you to believe in you, get you to believe in what's possible for you. We've got the program. We just need to get you inspired so that when I say, what's the word that you think of when you think of your dog training, it is some of these great words. You can be honest. You can be honest and say, yeah, I'm frustrated sometimes, sometimes, or I feel hopeless sometimes, or the training that I was doing in the last month didn't bring me any results. So I'm kind of thinking, I'm, I can't really, I find it difficult to believe in my dog. And that is 100% okay. That is a starting point. So right now, no matter if you're one of our Recaller students or not, I would love for you to write down your starting point today. Thursday, May 29th. This is the starting point with my dog. What's even better is if you can get pictures or videos of where you're starting. So if you have a dog who's shredding your couch, I know you want to stop them, but it'd be great if you just grab some video, grab, took a picture, then stop them and say, this is my starting point today. My dog just dug up all of my fresh herbs that I planted in the garden. That's my starting point today. So where's your starting point today? Because here's how we're going to continue. We've got to start, you know, guys. Okay. This is maybe a Canadian analogy. We're making a snowball. All right. So your starting point today, that snowball may have a lot of things in it. You don't want, but it's got some good stuff. You've got, it's your choice started. We got a bit of a hand target started. We've got a dog who understands cook versus search.

But Susan, I've got a dog who won't come when they're called. Who's digging in the garden. Who's barking at on leash. Who's lunging at kids. That's your starting point too, because here's how I'm going to make sure you know, I'm going to make sure you stay inspired. Some of you are going to join me callers, but even if you don't, I want you to stay inspired. So you've got your starting point. You're writing it down. Here's the top of the page starting point. Thursday, May 29th. All the things that are frustrating me, all the things that are making me feel a little bad about myself, all the things that I wish was different. And then all of the things that you're seeing glimmers in. And what you do is you look at where you were a month ago. Did you have the same glimmers? You might not have had the glimmers. If you are somebody with a new puppy or a new rescue dog, this is going to be really difficult for you. I find new puppy owners, new rescue dog owners in season of nuance are the most difficult. Here's why. Not that you're difficult students, not at all, but you're, you're a many of you are in this honeymoon cloud of love. That you go, oh my gosh, this is so easy. My dogs are doing all these games. This is my little puppy. Oh my gosh. I can't believe how good they are. And so when I say, join us for recallers for a year, they go, you say, I got it. Look at my dog. She's an angel. Unfortunately, what will happen is a year from now, you're going to be in so much pain because you don't have the guidance and the direction to build on what you've got. And you don't realize that dogs without structure, without ways for future reinforcement, turn to the environment for the, for the reinforcement. So many people are in pain because they have a dog who is challenging them. I don't know what to do with my reactive dog. I don't know what to do with my dog that won't stop chewing my furniture. I don't know what to do with my dog who I cannot walk on leash or the dog will not come back. No matter how many times I call them. That is a place of pain. It's easy. You're a sponge. You will listen to what we say because you want to get out of that pain. What is that great expression? A healthy person has a thousand wishes. A person, an unhealthy person has but one. A new puppy owner is a healthy person. Everything's rainbows and unicorns. I love it. So you have a lot of wishes and dreams and aspirations. Once you have a dog training challenge, you have but one challenge and it's so much pain.

And this is why I say the new puppy owners and the new rescue owners, you're a bit of a congundrum because you feel no reason to move forward. Now, some of you will. We get a lot of people with new puppies and rescue dogs that join us. But a lot of you are in this, I have a thousand wishes. And it's not until you're in pain because you have a challenge you don't know how to get out of. That's when and it's unfortunate because I don't want you to feel pain. I want you to just keep growing on what you've done. I'm getting ahead of myself. We still have a lot to talk about today. So, um, let me give away some prizes first. All right. I got to give away two prizes. So we, you know what I, I know I'm supposed to give away prizes early on, but I'm giving away prizes now. My favorite gem is that I have to keep in mind. Keep in my mind is if my dog gets out of position or doesn't follow what I'm asking. It's my dog telling me that my training isn't complete. It's information for me. It also helps me think about what I may have missed in the process of training for a behavior. Have I made a faulty assumption and how can I fix that? So thank you, Chris. That's a great, great gem. Uh, that's a great takeaway. Our dog's behavior is feedback for our training. That's it. It's just feedback for our training. Okay. So congratulations. Um, and the demos are going to be based on the challenges that you are having.

So I'm going to answer some of the questions that you've asked. But also in our last live, I talked about a little puppy named Charlie. And so I'm going to Charlie's here today and I'm going to do some training with Charlie. And I want you to, if, if you think about training happens in five layers, five layers of training. I want you to, maybe you can, um, tell Alison, she can bring Charlie in. Oh, what you would do with the propel. Maybe if there's time, I'll do a little demo. Remind me at the end, I'll do a little demo of why this is my favorite piece of fitness. Um, equipment. Okay. So Charlie, let me give some background. Charlie is, uh, I believe she's 12 weeks old because I met her on Saturday for the first time ever. And she was 11 weeks then. So if she isn't 12 weeks, she's soon going to be 12 weeks. She was born in rescue and adopted as a 10 and a half week old puppy. We believe that, well, she was adopted as a coon hound mix. Um, I think that there's some Terrier in there cause she's quick as a whip. And so I'm going to do some training with her. Maybe they'll do some training and demonstrate how to use propel at the same time. Um, I'm going to do some training with Charlie and I want you to think if there were five layers to training, I'll probably demonstrate four of the five layers. Okay. And I want you to see if you can pick out those four of those five layers. All right. So, but until Charlie comes up here, I'm going to answer some, uh, we're going to talk about some of the questions that you guys had. In the series. Um, okay. I need, uh, from Patricia, I need to go back to hand targets because one of my dogs is shy, then backs off quickly after a soft bump. What's a good way to start over on the hand target since my mechanics were obviously off with her. So number one thing, Patricia, I would, um, go to super outrageously high value for that dog. Um, so I would, um, go through fire to get that. So they're not going to be upset or put off by, um, can you get that, that little, um, bed out of there for me, please? The crate. So they're not going to be put off by the hand target. Um, also you can combine the hand target with search. So that at first you're not going to care. So I use the terminology average or better. So if my dog is coming into touch, I will say search before she gets a chance to touch and throw it away. If I have a soft touch and before she comes in search, throw it away. So then my average is I can get her that close and she happily drives out and gets a cookie and comes back. Now I'm going to get a soft touch search. So what is your average?

And you're going to reward below that and above that. Um, maybe profit can, when the puppy comes in, bring him over there. Um, so that you can have him on leash so that he doesn't scare the puppy. There's one right here. There's one out there too. Okay. Um, and I'll just maybe do a little demo with the, with the puppy to show that. But when I get the puppy in here, I'm going to really be working on trying to demonstrate to you. What are those five layers? What are the five layers of dog training that with every dog I've ever owned, I would say, any learning situation that it's a baby, any learning situation will start like that. You can just pick her up and bring her in so that she's not worried about profit. Okay. I'm going to change the camera. And so there is a little girly. Okay. So, um, I will keep her leash on for now. Thank you, Alison. All right. Okay. So many things to talk about in there. First of all, what did you observe? All right. So, let's talk about, yes, Charlie was very happy. Happy tail. Lots of shaping. You can, yeah. Yeah. You can go out. Thank you, Alison. Was a tug play a lair? Yes. The tug play was a lair. That's really great observation. Use my voice to engage the puppy. Arousal. Reward placement markers. Mary's a ringer. Okay. So, so many. Okay. So, I can't click on you guys. It happened so fast. Worked on getting your attention and become engaged. So, many of you have said something like that. Warm up puppy. Now, remember this puppy was born into rescue. She's only been with Alison for, I believe, 10 days. Alison is a first time dog owner. She is in by no means a dog trainer. So, when I, it was introduced to, to Charlie, I guess, four days ago, she had never been shaped to do anything. She'd been lured to do most. She was very, very bitey. There was very little biting this time. So, it was very fascinating. Okay. So, let's talk about the very first lair that I did that many of you saw was, I'm going to un-select this, was a layer of connection. So, we talked about these layers in the season of nuance, but I wanted to draw them out in particular, so that you could see, oh, every time I work with my own dogs, but absolutely, when I'm working with a new puppy, a puppy that knows a blank slate, that they know nothing, then I follow the same process. The first thing is a layer of connection. And that is engagement. Yes. That is tugging. I need to connect with a puppy. Now, what do most people do? The puppy is distracted by the environment and they immediately get the cookies out. Okay. We've got connection instantly, but what's the connection with? It's not with you, my friend. It's the connection is, oh yeah, I love food. Okay. Okay. Okay. So, I set up an environment where there was limited access to reinforcement. All that that puppy could do was sniff the floor, sniff the baby gates. There's a crate there, but I had the door closed. I manipulated the environment so that the puppy would choose the right thing, so that my training would be a success. I got out and I kept the puppy on leash for the first little while until I saw, yeah, I'll get a little, I wasn't getting tugged right away, but I got something, some little bit of following.

So, I didn't like, I didn't tell the puppy, you've got to tug, you've got to do this. I just allowed the puppy to make the choices she wanted until she chugged, she tugged with that toy. There's probably other toys, like if I, if I truly was training a new puppy that I'd never met before, I have some puppy toys that have more fleece and that are a little bit easier for a puppy to grab onto. And that would have probably, but I know that I played with Charlie four days ago and I know that I was able to get her to tug without a ton of effort, a little bit of effort because I am, I'm, this is a brand new environment. She's never been up here. So of course, what is the number one need or drive of all of us? Safety. So puppies, dogs, new environment. Am I safe? So had I like walked her around and given her some cookies, possibly she would have felt more safe. I chose to go with the tug because it helps a dog elevate their state of arousal to the point where the environment isn't as important to them. Okay. So what was the next layer? What happened after I got that connection? I could tug, I could take the towel. I could take the towel out of her mouth. She would offer me behaviors. That's when I knew, okay, we're connected. Now what's next? What is the next layer that I went to? What is the next thing that I went to with that puppy? Anybody? I'm going to give you the answer. That is clarity, clarity of a behavior. So the first thing I did was shape her. Yep. Sally M got it. Boom. The first thing I did was shape her with the tug toy. We were playing tug. Now I'm going to withhold it. Boom. You did something. Yeah. All right. Now, tug. So then I asked him to bring in the dog bed. She's never seen that dog bed before. I bet you there'll be a lot of smells that she has never smelled on that dog bed before. And so she did, she go and immediately start sniffing. She sniffed a little bit, but I reinforced her for getting to, for investigating. I didn't wait until she got on there and sat and looked at me and engaged. Watch me, watch me. No. No. All I did is reinforce her for something. And so I'm creating clarity of what earns you reinforcement. I did that in many different ways. So introducing, she, she knows search because Alison joined the season of nuance after she was here on Saturday. She's played all the games that you all played. So the puppy knows cook, no search. I saw a couple of little limitations in there, but of, of where her learning is and isn't. We can get to that later.

Um, but it was clarity of a behavior. This bed earns you good cookies. All right. Does anyone know what I went to next? What would I, what did I go to after I had clarity? Boom. She kept coming back. Boom. Yeah. This is how I get my cookies. Yeah. Boom, boom, boom. Boom. What did I do next? So I, I grew, I grew that puppy's confidence. I grew that puppy's confidence. And do you, it was so subtle. Do you know how I did that? What did I do? I did it by moving away from the bed and her going, yeah, look, I know what to do. So I'm growing the confidence at how do I earn my reinforcement? How do I earn my reinforcement? Because the more ways we can present like dogs, dogs learn in pictures. Okay. Here's my snapshot. You're right beside the bed. I get on the bed. I get on the bed. I get a cookie. You say, search. I go to the wall. I get a cookie. That's the picture. I know I changed the picture by moving away. I, I, I didn't change the picture by leaving the X-pen because then the opportunity for her to be successful would have gone in the toilet. I changed the picture just by moving away. I wanted to grow her certainty of what was going on and how she could earn reinforcement. Because that grew the confidence. Now what I have confidence, what do I want to do next? What? So now I've got, I could, I could introduce more ways for the puppy to be confident, but what did I do? What was the next thing that I did? Does anyone remember when I was training? Lisa is right. I did add challenge. How did I add that challenge? Does anyone remember what I did with that puppy? I added a challenge I thought would be really difficult, but doable, difficult, but doable. Does anyone remember anybody recall what I did to add that challenge? What I did was I put a cookie on the floor, not in her mouth. I didn't say search. I just put a cookie on the floor and she came off. And then she went back on and she earned more cookies. So this pyramid is like the secret to making the, making sure that the dogs can learn through games. They can have the autonomy to make those choices. As long as we have a plan that creates success for them, that shows them the boundary of success. And once we've got that, then we go to more complexity, which I probably did by adding the propel. And then we go to more complexity. And then we go to more complexity and the other, but complexity would be taking that puppy to a pet smart dog training class and expecting her to sit beside me.

Too often when puppies rescue dogs, agility dogs are trained, they're thrown into complexity before people allow them to grow up these layers of connection, clarity, confidence, and challenge. What the, what we should be doing is going challenge, more confidence, challenge, more confidence, challenge, more confidence, challenge, more confidence. I'm going to add complexity now by putting you into more distractions. Right? So that's exactly what we did with you in the connected dog series is we strategically introduced games that allowed value to grow connection to happen. Then we introduce ways for the dog to be successful at something, right? It's your choice. These are all foundation games that you can use any one of them to build a connection with your dog in any new environment. Okay. Angel said, it's really helpful to see the layers of learning and action, which is why I asked Alison to make the trip over here because it's no big deal for me to show you with one of my trained dogs. I know I don't get the same impacts from you. I want you to see an 11 week old puppy. We can exponentially improve that puppy's life by playing these games and adding opportunities for her to have more freedom and show you how amazing that those puppies can be. But it is all about having a plane, a plan that is layered in these connection, clarity, confidence, challenge, a little bit more confidence, a little more challenge, confidence, challenge, confidence. Oh, we're going to throw some complexity in there. That's really, if you are not, if you haven't finished the season of nuance or even even started, you've got this weekend. And if you have finished, I would love, love, love for you to look at some of the stories of some of our recaller students and the challenges you name a place. Remember I said your starting point is today, May 29th. There's going to be a new relationship, a new beginning for you and your dog, no matter how you're feeling, no matter how overwhelmed or frustrated, we're going to give yourself grace. You're going to know you're in a like-minded community of support that wants you to succeed. We're moving forward from here. So this is your starting place. This was, this is the dog starting point. Now imagine if there's, there's like thousands of other homes that Charlie could have ended up in. Charlie could have, could have ended up in somebody's backyard on a chain. Charlie could have ended up, you know, being ignored or people just hoped that she turned into this great dog.

Charlie could have ended up in a chain. But if we're intentional, we can create the dog of your dreams all by playing games. It 100% is possible. Okay. More before I go to these questions. Do you have more questions for, for me? Um, the most recent, uh, was this these about the session or these about the session? Okay. Uh, is cook your clicker substitution? Click. Uh, if you're, um, what you learn about in season of nuance is cook is what we call a location specific reinforcement marker. We call it, um, we call it, um, a spotlight just for the sake of making it easy. So a clicker is, um, more general, but, but very specific. A cook means that I'm delivering you cookie bite your mouth. A click could be, I might click and then throw a toy. I might click and, um, um, say search or throw cookie on the ground. My puppy knows I don't need, like, I don't need to use a clicker for anything I'm doing here because nothing's that specific. A clicker is something. If I was teaching my puppy, I want you to touch your rear leg to the back wall. I would click the moment the paw touched the back wall and they would know that specifically what I'm looking for. If I was teaching my puppy to wave and I clicked every time they lifted their paw, I might get like a, uh, I've got a question instead of a wave. All right. Um, so speaking of pet smart, Stephanie says, I'm a new pet smart strainer trainer trainer with 29 years competitive obedience, rally nose work club teaching experience. I am really working. These concepts into my students training. That's brilliant. Invite your students to the student, to the season of nuance. We have till Monday. Um, okay. So cook is different than a clicker. It's less specific, but more specific. Does that make sense? I know it's a little bit crazy. Um, it's more specific in that. It tells the dog exactly where the reinforcement will be delivered. Uh, does the bed indicate working now? Um, I think engagement with me indicates working now because I could put a bed down. Um, um, and that, that doesn't, that doesn't change the mindset of my dog. Like if I was to move all of this out, um, and train profit and him just started putting inanimate objects into the training environment, he wouldn't stop and investigate them. But if I stopped and, and stared at it, he would. So I don't think the bed indicates working. I think, um, that the, that the engagement that I start with indicates working is tapping your site occasionally significant. I don't know when I tap my side.

So in the last demo I did, um, that's a recaller game that yes. Uh, it's indicating a place of focus for the dog, but I don't think I tapped my side here at all. How do you decide how long to make a session? You always make it shorter than you think you should. We always want the dog to hate that we ended that session too. Often people wait till the dog starts sniffing or leaving or scratching, or this is getting boring. And then they, oh yeah, I went too far. And they quit. That's that's not how you want to end your sessions. You want to be, this is going great. I'm going to stop. I'm going to, you know, Oh, okay. We'll get back to that. So you want to like, if I have a rescue dog, um, I have a journal in recolors in the library. It's called the streaker journal. And it's, uh, um, it's a journal that I entry wrote probably 15 years ago, maybe even more. I had a rescue terrier. I was his third home and I was rehabilitating him as a sport dog. And I did a journal every day. I think I had, I I'd be guessing. It was a matter of weeks, maybe six weeks or something like that before I had people tripping over themselves and wanting to adopt him. And when he started, nobody wanted him. He'd been in three homes. He peed everywhere. He didn't tug. He didn't like food. And he ended up having like this amazing fly ball career, but I digress. So the streaker journal, which is in recolors of your recolor student. If you haven't seen the streaker journal, check it out. When I started training in the streaker journal, my sessions were 10 seconds long, five seconds long, 20 seconds long, three seconds long. Because that dog did not want to play with me. So all I did was sessions of engagement. I wanted him. I would bring him down to this training den. It was in the lower level of my then home and I would get him out. I would run across. I had changed his name. So we really didn't know his name. I would just make a goofy noise, run across the floor, put a handful of really exciting treats on the floor. As he was eating them, I backed away, made a goofy noise, ran across the room, put a couple more exciting treats on the floor. And then did that one more time, picked him up. And that was the end of my session. It was something like that. Like that, that was a session. So I can't tell you how long to make that session. If I was training my dog Profit, there would never be a time where he would say, can we quit now? He would probably die. But I know that's not good for my dog. That I want my dog mentally engaged and physically able to be at their best.

So my training sessions are, depending on what I'm working on, between three and five minutes with an adult dog. With a puppy, it could be a minute or two or less before I break into a game of tug. And I might do a few of those in one session. If I was training Charlie, I would break it up with crate games so the puppy can have some downtime. I reorganize what I'm going to do and bring her out. Like I might bring her back and forth. But that's why I suggest to our students, don't set aside 20 minutes or an hour to train every day. Three minutes, two minutes, one minute. You turn the coffee maker on. It takes three minutes for that thing to heat up. Go do a little training session. That is far, far more impactful, far more impactful than your hour of training that you do once a week. I guarantee it'll change your life. If you're doing the kind of training that we have for you in the season of nuance. How long should breaks be in between the games? I think like live your life. Make that coffee, sit down, have your coffee and then do another session. How long would you have tried to tug if she didn't show interest? I would never have tried to tug if I didn't know she would tug. So when she was here on Saturday, I asked her owner if she had ever tugged. If she had said no, I would have done some things differently than I did. But she said, yes, she has tugged. Now she wasn't going to like latch on and tug with me. This was a new environment. Remember, I knew number one need and drive of all animals is safety. She is not going to go, whoa, I'm grabbing onto this. And heck, I don't. She, when she came in the door, what happened? You guys could hear profit barked at her. Now I am a little lower on the safety scale. So I knew when he barked, the chances of me getting immediate tug would have gone down. Right. So all of these things play a role. So how long would I have tried? I would have just made myself so, so interesting. She would have tugged. I mean, I, I just know what I'm capable of with puppies and, and I know what I wouldn't try. I'm not going to try and make a dog to tug with me that I have zero understanding or what their history is. And the toy I choose would be different depending on the history of that dog. If I worked up layers, a dog doesn't have confidence to do the, to do you stop the session and try the next time. If I stop a session because my dog has shown a lack of confidence in the work, that stop needs to be a catastrophic event in my life. Too often people say, Oh, my dog's not engaged. I'm going to put them away.

Oh, I think I went too long. I'm going to put them away. All that you're doing is lowering the dog's threshold for wanting to train with you. And so if I have a dog and it happens that I make poor dog training decisions. I remember once with one of my terriers in weep holes, she just stopped working. And it was like somebody had driven a dagger through my heart. I have this dog because I love them and I love engaging with them. And here she showed me this is no longer fun for me. And I said, this will never happen to us again. Because I'm going to write down everything I can think of about that session. What are the things I did? What were the wrong decisions I made for you? Instead of saying, Oh, I got a big baby sucky dog, shut down dog. And that's who it is. And I just expect that she's going to do this for no. I want to bring out the best in that dog. I want them to have their best life. So I know we can do that. I know we can do that. Do you follow this plan for every dog for every training session? I follow the layers of learning that I laid out for you for every new behavior that I am training. I can whip through all those layers. If I'm like I was downstairs training before I went live with you. And so I start with a connection. Always, always. I evaluate confidence. Always. I throw in a little challenge. Always. Those three layers take less than 20 seconds with the dog that I know that I'm training, but it always goes through the same thing. And that's how, you know, it's a predictable formula for success. Why would I, why would I mess with that? Okay. Where's recallers info? I believe the best place for you to look at right now is our students. So there's many videos. Like I would say hundreds of videos. There's two things you can do. Google Susan Garrett recallers. You'll probably get 5,000 videos of former students saying, giving their opinion about recallers. I am not exaggerating. You'll get pages of Google pages on that. But if you go to doggyflix.com, their stories, read some of the stories. I want you to see yourself. I want you to see people who started exactly where you're starting. Some of you may not have, you're saying, you know, my dog training, isn't that challenging. That's great. This is the time that you can now accelerate the learning for your dog by following a proven formula. Okay. Do I have, okay. We want to get back to the tapping. So the question wasn't tapping my side. I was patting the puppy's side. So if you've ever seen two dogs play, they body slam each other, don't they?

So I do a little bit of that when I'm playing with a puppy and I work up to with like, oh, my own dogs. Like I can really, I call it smack the baby. Smack a baby. So yeah, I just bring in the physical play, especially if you have a dog that you want to do sports with. I think it's fun for all dogs. Some dogs you have to start really soft with just a couple of fingers, especially remember what's the number one need safety. So you're not going to take a new dog and start smacking them around because they're going to go. Whoa. Whoa. And remember there's a difference. So, you know, I went up to Kim who's sitting here being ever so engaged in everything that I'm doing. Kim doesn't like me on camera. And I went up to Kim and I said, hey, did you see that movie last night? Wasn't it awful? Then she's going to laugh and tell me about the movie. Yeah, that was brutal. But if I came up to her and I said, did you put like milk in my coffee? Like that's a different kind of hit, isn't it? With a dog that you don't have a relationship with, they're going to be unsure. They're going for safety first. Right. And your intention, your energy has a lot to do with that. So it is a form of connecting with the dogs. And I think it's super important. Like I said, especially for dogs who are doing sports because they're going to be banging up against things all the time. Okay. More questions about the program. I think it was going to do. I'll just do a quick little demo. Can you move that out of the way? So I'll do a demo with that and showing these layers of learning happening fast. Where do you fit drive into that pyramid? Oh, that's a great question, Catherine. Where do you fit drive into the pyramid? So connection is bringing out the natural drive, allowing the dogs to show you where their drive is. Now, if you have like a working dog, working line shepherd, working malinois, working field lab, working line dog, they can go from zero to a thousand very, very quickly. It's still important that we get engagement at a border collie, of course, is going to go in there as well. We need engagement, but we also need control in that engagement. Obviously not with a wee puppy. So I am going to do things with a dog. I know is super high in a different way than I'm going to do things with, say, my border collie, Vissy, who is a little softer and isn't going to go. She is, she's always about safety and she's not going to go to a level where she's out of control. So drive is connection, but you need to evaluate how much you've got and how close to being over aroused are you with that dog? That's a really, really good question.

Okay. So I'm going to get profit out. I think I can do this just on this camera. That'll be, that'll be good. So I don't have to change cameras and I'll just go through those connection. Clarity, challenge, back to connection, clarity, confidence challenge. All right. So I'll put some things in the environment so that you can see that the items in the environment don't indicate work. It is engagement from me that indicates work. I'll put some cookies in the bowl here. I'll put a propel on the floor, which all my dogs know what this is. And for sure, my dogs spend so much time on a climb. So I don't know, is this in shot yet? Oh, there it is. So all of these things, I'm going to move that chair so you guys can see. So if I was, I'll put a toy out there too. So if I was just going to call him into this environment, you can see the toy, you can see the climbs, then he's not, can you take his leash off of him? He's not likely going to investigate these other things. My guess is he's going to come in and connect with me immediately. I could be wrong. So I'm trying to go to a location where, I move that out there. Okay. So probably the last thing I touch is the thing that he's going to investigate. That's my guess, or he'll come right to me. So let's see. Okay. Okay. And there's the cookies here. Put those, put those there. I'll put one on the floor too. I'll put a pile of them on the floor. Let's see how that goes. Okay. So I got everything outside of where we are. Profit break. So this is where he engages. He looks around, strike. Yeah. That's what we want. I, sit, strike. You can't talk. You can't talk and play with me. You can't talk with me. You don't know everything. I might sit, strike. And side, side, and side. Yes. Strike. Yeah. Okay. So he didn't know what was important. And he's like, okay. And he's like, okay. So he didn't know what was important. None of those things indicated work to him. I indicate an engagement. So let me get these cookies. Oh, I dropped some cookies. Put that on the floor. And he said, this was the last thing you touched. So this is it. Up. Up. Up. Good. Okay. Stand. Step. Good. Good. Nice. I want two on and two off, buddy. Let's try this. Step. Step. Good. Step. Nice. Cook. Good. Cook. Cook. Cook. Cook. Cook. I didn't say that. Yes. Yes. Good. Cook. Cook. Bring me. Of showing you all of those layers. How I would whip through those layers with an experienced dog. Notice when he came out, what did he do? He came out and he looked at me. At no point in his life was he ever reinforced for focusing on me. At no point. I remember when I started more traditional dog training. Um, we spent so much time with the puppies going, watch me, watch me, heads up, watch me. Um, focus for you is a byproduct of engagement with the dog. If you're playing games that gives the dog power to choose, you get that focus for work. That's just free. It's like extra. You don't have to pay time putting in. Watch me. Heads up. Watch. Watch. Okay. Um, all right. Um, yes, there's a question. Do I just strike mean take the toy? Yes. Strike means come to my hand, take the toy. It's different than if I'd said, um, bring me. Right. So bring me would be, there's a toy over here on the floor that would have been go and find the toy on the floor. So he's laying down right now. Let's just test this. Bets strike. You're sitting in a chair. That's weird, mom. Thank you. Can you go hop a tap? Right now. Bring me. Bets, bring me. It's not poison. You can get that one. Bring me. I like to know, am I being effective communicator? When I share with you, this is possible for all of you. It will work for your dog. Your dog needs to feel safe. You need to feel safe. When those things happen. Magic can happen with the two of you provided you're following a successful plan. The successful plan is in the season of nuance for you right now. Um, I have an observation. Why do you think there are more women than men involved with dogs that, um, do you mean on our team? Cause we've got quite a few men on our team or do you mean in our community of learning? If it's like the general dog community is a very strange one. And there's a lot of reasons for it, but I don't want to get into that. But generally speaking, like when I speak at some of the, the high level dog training conferences, like the American, uh, association of, uh, professional pet dog trainers, um, 95% of the audience will be women, which means women are engaging in learning more about elite levels of dog training. However, if you look on social media who has all of the millions of followers is generally men.

I think that's a reflection of the patriarch that we, as women, it's mostly women who are training dogs, but sadly women immediately give authority to men and maybe not to women so much. So I think that's part of the reason if you're talking about our dogs, that team, you know, what our dogs, that team, I don't know what the percentage of men on our dogs, that team, but we have quite a few. Um, yeah, we have all types and we love them all, all the dogs, even cats. Okay. Um, George, you're wonderful. Heart for men like George. I believe women are more empathetic, empathetic, but, um, that could be a judgment. I think there's a lot of very good men training dogs, a lot of very empathetic men training dogs. Um, and I think in the future it will, it will definitely change as this way of training gets to be more accepted. There will be a massive population of men and women training and leading, being leaders in this, in this, um, mission of having help, helping dogs live their best life ever, um, without the need of physical corrections or verbal intimidation.
