As we wind down the year, I thought I would do a best of 2021, the most popular podcast of 2021. I'm also going to share what my favorite podcast of the year was and the one I would love each and every one of you to listen to more than once. Hi, I'm Susan Garrett. Welcome to Shaped by Dog. There was a common theme through all of the podcasts that were at the top and I will tell you what our most popular podcast for the year. But the commonality was they were all about dog training. They were all, somebody was Googling, I have a challenge and I need help with this. And they could be grouped into walking my dog on leash, help with my puppy biting, reactivity or resource guarding. So, there's like four topics that covered all 10 of those most popular podcasts of the year. And so, the number one podcast of the year, I'm going to just jump right in and tell you all about it. I'm going to go through these and I'm going to share with you the big key takeaways and why the information that I share, why it's just so darn effective for you and your dog. So, number one, drum roll please, number one podcast of the year, Leash Walking. This is episode number 76, Leash Walking, Distracted or Reactive Dog. So, this was a podcast where I shared several games that you could play when you're walking your dog on leash, which there's two things you could do when you're walking your dog on leash. And I talked about it in this and other podcasts. You could be a distracted owner walking with your phone, you know, scrolling through, you know, whatever on your phone, which you know what, that's not going to benefit anyone, certainly not your dog. You could be engaged with your dog and play some of the games that I mentioned in this podcast, but you could also just let your dog sniff, let them check the P-mail. And you know, I like to do a balance of that with the dogs that sometimes they're just walking with me, hanging out and they are doing their own thing. And other times they're engaged. Why do I want that engagement? Because if there's a dog coming towards me, I don't want them to suddenly go, Hey, connect with me because I got to get you on the other side. I'll always be scanning the area to see, should I have my dog working with me so that, oh yeah, we can pass where my shoulder is on the side of the dog and my dog's on the opposite side just to prevent any possible problems. '두 랜드' 방식이란 우리가 단계를 나누어 가르친다는 뜻입니다. 이해를 높이는 단계이자, 상호작용하는 게임을 통해 가르치는 단계죠. 우리는 음식 유인물을 사용하지 않고 행동을 형성(shape)하며 개가 스스로 선택을 통제하도록 가르쳐서 개들이 스스로 옳은 행동을 하고 싶어지게 만듭니다. 그런데 최근 페이스북에 이 내용이 올라왔을 때 누군가 이렇게 말하더군요. '제가 하는 방법은 개가 뛰어오를 때 가슴에 무릎을 살짝 대주는 거예요. 그러면 개는 안 뛰어오르게 배우죠.' 그 글을 읽고 저는 생각했습니다. 가슴에 무릎을 대는 것과 같은 행동을 바라보는 많은 사람이 있죠. 만약 그 댓글을 다신 분이 이 방송을 들으신다면 부디 이것을 비난일 수도 있지만, 이건 공통점이죠. 사람들은 '음, 그냥 개일 뿐이잖아'라고 말하곤 금방 알아차립니다. 하지만 이걸 한번 생각해보세요. 만약 안아주는 것을 좋아하고 사람들을 보면 아주 크게 껴안으며 반가워하는 아이가 있다고 해보죠. 개가 점프해서 껴안는 것처럼요. 그런데 갑자기 팬데믹 상황이 된 거예요. 아이들이 손님을 껴안게 할 수는 없죠. 그래서 우리는 사람들에게 이렇게 말하는 겁니다. 문을 열고 들어올 때, 그냥 내 아이의 배를 부드럽게 툭 치라고요. 그러면 아이가 알아들을 테니까요. 숨이 턱 막히게 하라는 건 아니에요. 못되게 굴라는 뜻이 아니에요. 그냥 부드럽게 찌르는 거죠. 마치 필스베리 반죽을 찌르듯이요. 아이에게 미리 경고할 필요도 없어요. 그냥 배를 툭 치기만 하세요. 그 방법도 아마 효과는 있겠죠. 하지만 그 대가는 어떨까요? 반려견과 겪는 어떤 문제든, 어떤 도전이든 그 관점을 자신에게 돌려 '좋아, 어떻게 하면 내 기대를 명확하게 전달할 수 있을까?'라고 고민하는 것은 반려견과의 관계를 더 깊은 수준으로 이끌어 줍니다. 그것이 반려견을 위한 훈련 환경을 조성하게 해주죠. 누군가는 '수잔, 저는 그런 훈련을 다 하고 싶지 않아요. 그냥 내 개가 얌전했으면 좋겠어요'라고 말할지도 모릅니다. 글쎄요, 살면서 가질 가치가 있는 모든 것은 시간을 투자했기 때문에 가치가 있는 법입니다. 살면서 가장 중요한 것들을 생각해보면, 아마 그것들은 물건이 아니라 관계라는 걸 알게 될 겁니다. 우리와 반려견의 삶 또한 하나의 관계입니다. 그러니 그 안에 가치를 불어넣어야죠. 그게 바로 이 게임들이 하는 일입니다. 우리는 행동을 셰이핑(shaping)하며 학습의 층을 쌓아가고,

In our number 10 most popular podcast here on Shaped by Dog. And the reason I think it's only number 10 is because it's a very recent podcast. Podcast episode number 121 was our, one of our most popular podcasts in the first 24 hours, it was released. And it was about teaching your dog not to jump on your guests or not to jump on people that you meet. And of course it's a do land approach. A do land approach, meaning we teach in layers, layers that create understanding, layers that we teach with interactive games. We don't use food lures, we shape behaviors and we teach the dogs to be in control of their own choices and they want to do the right thing. Now, when this was posted on Facebook recently, somebody said, you know, what I like to do is to just gently give my dog a knee to the chest when he dumps up and he learns not to. And I read that and I said, you know, there's a lot of people who look at something like a knee to the chest. And if it was you who said that, please don't take this as a criticism, but it's a commonality. People go, well, it's just a dog. And they figure it out really quick. But think about this. If you took a kid who loved to hug and they just love greeting people with this great big hug, jumping up as a dog's hug. And suddenly now we're in a pandemic. We can't have our kids hugging guests. So, we tell our people, when you come through the door, just gently punch my kid in the stomach because he'll get it. Like, don't like knock the air out of him or anything. I don't want you to be like, you know, mean. Just a gentle like poke, like a Pillsbury poke in the style. You don't have to warn him. No, just give him a poke in the stomach. I bet that would work too. But at what cost? And taking any approach, any challenge you have with your dog and turning it on yourself and going, okay, how could I be clear with my expectations allows you to reach a deeper level in your relationship with your dog. It allows you to set up training for your dog. And you could say, oh, Susan, I don't want to do all that training. I just want my dog to behave. Well, anything worth having in life is worth having because you invested your time in that. All the most important things in life I bet you will find are not things at all, they're relationships. And our life with the dog is just a relationship. And so, you want to put in value. And that's what these games do. We're building layers of learning through shaping behavior

개가 좋아하는 게임을 만들어내며, 결과적으로 우리가 원하는 행동을 이끌어냅니다. 윈윈이죠. 또 다른 인기 에피소드는 66화였습니다. 바로 자원 지키기에 관한 내용이었죠. 사실 제가 키우던 강아지가 자원 지키기 시기를 겪었을 때의 일기 같은 이야기를 들려드렸었죠. 그리고 제가 덧붙이고 싶은 말은, 이에 대한 각주로, 제가 녀석이 자원 보호(resource guarding)를 겪던 시기가 있었다고 말했을 때, 만약 여러분이 문제를 겪고 있다면 자원 보호나 반응성(reactivity) 같은 문제는 절대 한 번에 끝나는 게 아닙니다. 그냥 체크 표시하고 끝낼 수 있는 게 아니죠. 항상 그 개가 음식이나 다른 개들 주변에서, 또는 장난감과 다른 개, 혹은 여러분과 여러분의 음식 등 그 개가 무엇을 자원 보호하든 그 상황에서 어떻게 자신감을 가질 수 있는지 이해하도록 돕는 것을 늘 염두에 두어야 합니다. 그런 문제가 다시는 발생하지 않도록 지속적으로 그 은행에 돈(신뢰)을 저축하는 것을 두려워하지 마세요. 하지만 '아, 그냥 수잔의 프로토콜을 따랐으니 이제 다 괜찮아'라고 생각한다면, 스스로를 속이는 겁니다. 무시되는 모든 행동은 커지거나 악화되기 때문입니다. 그리고 어떤 환경에서든 여러분 반려견의 자신감은 우리가 항상 인지하고 있어야 하며, 그들의 최고의 옹호자가 되어 끊임없이 '걱정할 필요 없어, 여유는 충분해'라는 메시지를 저축해 주어야 합니다. 그래서 다 큰 개가 되어서도 문제가 되지 않도록 해야 하죠. 그래서 우리 팀원이자 팟캐스트 제작을 담당하는 샤론에게 올해 가장 좋았던 팟캐스트가 무엇인지 물어봤습니다. 그녀는 팟캐스트 118화를 골랐는데, 흔히 발생하는 문제라 모두가 들어보면 정말 좋을 것 같습니다. 집 안에 두 가지 규칙이 있을 때 무슨 일이 벌어지는지에 대한 내용이죠. 비록 이 에피소드가 가장 인기 있는 에피소드는 아니었지만요. 왜냐고요? 무언가를 어떻게 해야 하는지에 대한 요리책 같은 지침은 아니었기 때문이죠. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 매우 중요한 에피소드입니다. 왜냐하면 개들은 우리가 훈련사로서 일관성을 유지하는 만큼만 일관성을 보인다는 사실을 알려주기 때문입니다. 따라서 집에 매우 일관성이 없거나 지속적으로 일관성 없는 사람이 한 명이라도 있다면, 개는 항상 그 사람에게서 원하는 것을 얻어내려 할 것입니다. 그리고 만약 여러분이 지속적으로 일관된 사람이라면, 말이 좀 중복되었다는 건 알지만, 그때야 비로소 개들은 여러분에게 기준이 있다는 것을 이해하게 될 것입니다. 당신의 기준은 항상 동일합니다. 절대 변하지 않죠. 이는 당신에게 어느 정도 책임이 있다는 뜻입니다. 밖에서 비가 오든 상관없습니다. 회의에 늦었든 상관없죠. 반려견에 대한 기준을 바꿔야 할 이유는 없습니다. 그건 때때로 반려견에게는 언제나 해당하는 이야기입니다. 그러니 기대치에 대해 명확하고 일관성을 유지해야 하며, 그러면 반려견은 당신에게
that create games that the dog loves to do, which creates behaviors that give us the outcomes that we want. Win, win. Another popular episode was episode number 66. And this is all about resource guarding. And it was actually, I recounted a diary of what I went through with my puppy, this, who went through a period of resource guarding. And let me just, I just want to add a footnote to this, that when I say she went through a period of resource guarding, if you have a problem like resource guarding or reactivity, it's never like one and done. You don't check it off. You always want to be cognizant of helping that dog to understand how they can be confident around food and dogs or around toys and a dog or around you and your food or whatever it is that that dog is resource guarding. Don't be afraid to put money in that bank on an ongoing basis so that you don't ever have that problem. But if you go, oh, I just followed Susan's protocol and yeah, we're all good. You're kidding yourself. Because any behavior that gets ignored is either going to grow or erode. And your dog's confidence in any environment is something that we need to be cognizant of and be their best advocate and constantly be putting money in the, hey, no need to worry. There's lots to go around. And so that it never gets to be a problem as an adult dog. So, I asked Sharon, who is on our team and works on the podcast production, what was your favorite podcast of the year? And she picked podcast number 118, which I think is a really good one for everybody to listen to because it's a common issue. What happens when there are two sets of rules in the house. And even though this one wasn't one of our most popular ones, why? Because it wasn't necessarily a cookbook recipe on how to do something, but nonetheless, a super important episode because it shares the truth that dogs will only be as consistent as we are as trainers. So, if there's one person in the house that's very inconsistent or is consistently inconsistent, then the dog will know to always try to get what they want from that person. And if you are the person that is consistently consistent, that's a redundancy I recognize. Then they're going to understand that you have criteria. Your criteria is always the same. It never changes, which means you have a little bit of responsibility here that it doesn't matter if it's raining out. It doesn't matter if you're late for a meeting. There is no reason why you change criteria for the dog. That sometimes is any time to the dog. And so, you need to be clear and consistent with your expectations and your dog will

be amazing to you and always do the same thing because the rules never change. As I said in episode number 118, you are not that gaping hole in the fence. Now, three of our top 10 podcast episodes were all about how to stop puppy biting. And let's face it, puppies bite. It's a way of life. But if you do this right, your puppy really shouldn't bite for long. Honestly, I play with a puppy and they understand my rules really, really quickly. And it isn't done by me saying no or being harsh with a puppy. It's all done in play. So, if you have a puppy or considering getting a puppy, make sure that you listen to podcast episode number 17, episode number 82, and episode number 18. All about teaching your puppy to understand life with me isn't about biting my hands or biting my pant legs. It's about biting the things that are appropriate. And we're going to grow the things that are appropriate and be patient with a puppy because the way that they communicate is through their mouth. I'm just going to add an aside. I think I've mentioned it in every episode. One of the big reasons puppies bite, people keep them up way too long. Puppies sleep a lot. And if you're certain your puppy's getting adequate sleep, lots of naps, you're going to find that the amount of biting that happens goes way down. Now, as I mentioned, the commonality in all of these top 10 podcasts is training. And podcast episode number 68, a big favorite, and it was three tricks every dog should know. And they're simple tricks. I walk you through how you could teach them. episode number 107, where I shared how you can kindly and cooperatively get your dog or your puppy to allow you and them be involved in getting their nails trimmed. So, it doesn't have to be a struggle. It doesn't have to be a fight. Check out both podcast number 106, it's kind of related and number 107. But the number one favorite for myself and for Sharon, and it's the one that I wish that you guys would watch and rewatch. I wish you'd share it on every social media channel that you have, because I think it shares the message of Dooland better than any other podcast episode. And that is podcast episode number 100, where I celebrated the fact that we made it to 100 episodes. And I talked about the parallel between dog training and the evolution of dog training and the evolution of how children are raised. And it's just, I think such an important podcast for every dog owner to listen to. Because then things like back to my Facebook page, where we shared the post about how to get a dog not to jump up. Somebody wrote, well, my trainer told me to grab my dog's paws and hold them until the dog sits. Again, not a Dooland approach, but not an uncommon one. Podcast number 100, well, it's about the philosophy about bringing out the best in your dog. About creating psychological safety for the dog. About bringing up their confidence. About creating a relationship, a teamwork. And it's just an investment of your time that pays dividends for a long, long life for your dog. I believe the way you train a dog has an effect on the longevity of the dog. Why would I say that? Because it's all stress related. If the way you train a dog is causing stress, well, we know what stress hormones do to longevity. It absolutely has an impact on that. Dog training can't help, but have an impact on how, not only how long our dogs live, but the kind of life they have in each year of their life. Now, as we get near the end of the year and we are in the holiday season, I just want to say, I know that right now there's a lot of people that are forced to spend the holidays alone. I myself will be spending the holidays alone. I have nine brothers and sisters, but because of the pandemic, we don't get together the way we used to. We do it on Zoom, but I want to share with you that when you have a dog, you're never alone. And I'd like you to be proactive for the holidays. I'd like you to make a list of the podcasts that you would like to listen to. Maybe those with games, training games that you can work with your dog. Maybe on certain days,
