'뉘앙스의 계절(The Season of Nuance)' 말이죠.
We are live. Exciting. This is going to be epic. I wrote that on Facebook. This is going to be an epic live. So let me know in the comments where you're listening from. And let me know if you have had a chance to watch the first episode of The Connected Dog, The Season of Nuance. Not a problem if you haven't, but I'd love to know if you have. And I'm just going over to see if this is working on Instagram, which I don't think it is. So I think we're going to have to go without Instagram today. Sorry, all you Instagram folks. So I have a question. I mean, I've asked you a lot of things already to put in the comments. So lots of people who've already watched. That's great. From San Diego, Santa Fe, New Mexico, Devon, England, Netherlands. Hello from all over the world to everybody. Minnesota, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Awesome. Honestly, there's going to be... I like to think every time I go live, I provide great clarity for people. But this is going to be... I use the word epic. I'm going to say it again. And it's not just because I'm coming live from Epic Canine here in Austin, Texas. I would love for you to answer this question for me. In 10 words or less, describe the biggest challenge you're facing with your dog, or if you have a puppy with your puppy right now. 10 words or less, if you can do that. I have watched the first two episodes. Yes, we have two episodes currently. Thank you. We're watching from South Dakota. One and two. Awesome. A lot of you have watched. Hi, Sarah from Michigan. Cambridge, Ontario. Come on. That normally is like 20 minutes down the road from me, but not today. Okay. 10 words or less. Sarah says, extremely high drive, super fast, gets frustrated easy from the Tampa area. Okay. Thank you for that, Sarah. Brantford, Ontario. Hello, Ruth Hunt. Ruthie and I, back in the 80s, taught dog training at the same dog training school, believe it or not. Number one challenge. Oh, growling at the veterinarian. I bet your veterinarian would like us to help you with that. I'm looking... Today isn't about fixing all of your challenges. However, I'm going to give you some great insight into next steps for sure. Um, loose leash walking with a 16-week-old Julianne. It's a little bit early for loose leash walking. I think you can be doing a lot of things to go towards that. I actually don't walk my puppies on a leash when they're that age. I do a lot of exercise other ways. Um, food aggression between my two dogs. Separation anxiety. Look at all the different, all the different, uh, challenges. Frustration-based reactivity towards dogs.

Uh, Nell hasn't had a chance to watch the other episodes, to watch our episodes yet. We have time. They're very short. Um, reactivity. So, uh, a varied, a varied amount of different challenges. So today, what I'm going to do is I'm going to answer the questions that you guys have posted on the Connected Dog. And I'm going to tell you that after this live, I'm just going to give you a place to do this. After this live, we are going to be having our first platinum level Zoom call. Now, this is great and that I get to share with you. But on a Zoom, you have the option of putting your face on the screen too. It's a little bit more personal. I expect with this live, we'll probably have 1,500, maybe a few thousand people on this live. But, and so I can't have a personal conversation with anybody. And I can't tailor my conversations. So the, the platinum level, if you're interested in it, um, you can still sign up for that. And you'll find that on, um, doggyflix.com. You'll find out how to join the platinum level. It's $50, like one session. I promise you will be worth $50. Okay. Overexcited greeting. That's a common, look at this. Getting adequate arousal for learning. A lot, this is a similar emotional level. Um, that's a great observation, Marianne. Me getting out of my own way. Um, nails. We, we got you on that. Pedicure, please, can fix that one for you. A high anxiety with your rescue as she gets older. Check thyroid. Go to your veterinary and ask them to check thyroid. Um, dogs screaming in kennel when I'm working other dogs. That is one I just, I'm intolerant of. I just can't, I can't do, I'm not at my best when dogs are barking in the background. So I make sure that's a priority that that doesn't happen for me. And, uh, yeah, it's something that we can fix. And I've got a formula that I'm going to share with you guys today. That's going to help a lot of you with these challenges. So thank you for Jane says best $50 she's ever spent on the connected dog platinum level. I promise you that if you, if you allow yourself to invest in that $50 in the platinum level, you'll be going to be saying the same thing. That's my, you know what? I, I put out so much information for people, um, because I want everybody to have access to great dog training, but I love when I can work with a more intimate group because I can dial it in even, even more specifically. So there's going to be a lot of great things here today. We're going to talk about it even more detail, uh, on the, on the platinum level call, which is a zoom call. Okay. So we're, I'm going to start right off. Oh, look at how cool is that?

포 마이 멀스(For My Murls) 제품입니다.
If you look at the comment section, Elena from our team has already put in the link that you can join the connected dog. Next question I have for you. Have you printed out? And I personally like to go to the printers for these things. Have you printed out your lesson plans? So for call or grab lesson plans so that I like, I mean, I like writing in my books so you can write in that. And then this one and throw my back doing this one, the playbook that comes with the connected dog. So if you're watching this and you're not in the connected dog, then you need to get in there. We have got so many things available for you. Um, a hundred percent free. The $50 is just for those who really want to deep dive. All right. Enough of that. I want to give away a prize. So first thing, the first order of business is if you, um, are watching this and you would be interested in getting a prize, all that you have to do. I have to get Julia, uh, Elena's off of there. All you have to do is share this live. So copy the share, wherever you're seeing it, go and put it in anywhere in social media and come back and in the comments, right? Shared and tell us where you shared it. And if the name is different, then you need to let us know your name on that social media. Can you turn the air up a little bit? I'm going to, I'm going to be a little wound up. We have a great and very interesting demo dog today. Siberian Husky. This girl's turning on the Siberian Husky charm today. I also have brought thisie with me. She's here from, I brought her down to Texas with me. Okay. So share this live and what I'm going to do, we're going to start right off. We're going to give away, I brought one with me. Here it is. From For My Murls. You hear that? I don't know. Here. So it's got one of those crinkles in, which is my dog's favorite. And it's also a squeaky. Some dogs like it. I love the bungees. This is For My Murls. I'm giving one, look, it even says recolors on it. How cute is that? I'm going to give one away. So all that you have to do is share. Actually, yeah. At the end of today, I'm giving this away before I get off the live. But don't worry if you're not on the live. I got to put my hair up because it's hot in here. Never mind. My hair is on. At the end of today, I'm going to tell you how you can also earn or win another prize. All right. So all of that is happening right now. But I'm going to start right off. So some of you said where you shared it. That's good. I love that. Jill said I also shared it in real life. That's awesome. So just say where you shared it.

And here's a question about, for now until I can get to town and printing business printed a couple pages. Okay. That's a great idea. Jenny had to go in. Well, she didn't have to. But she was so gracious to go to the printers and pick these up for me today. So awesome. I'm going to start off with a question here. We have a bunch of questions that you guys have asked. So here we go. First one off. And a lot of these questions I've heard before. So I think it's amazing that they're circling around. After playing hand targets. So that was a new step-by-step layered approach to hand targets. Because we're talking about the season of nuance. So there's nuances to every skill we can train our dog. And in the connected dog this year, I'm really breaking down the... Did everybody notice the nuances on how I broke them out in what we shared both in the three videos that are there? Hand target and episode one and episode two. So the nuances are really what helps dogs learn faster when we can get the humans to understand those better. So here's a question. After playing the hand target, when I go to grab my dog's collar, She thinks I'm playing the hand target game and goes for my hand. What should I be doing differently? That is what I love. Because if you've built value for the hand, then when your dog sees the hand, they're coming in and you just grab the collar and get a cookie in their mouth so quickly. It's a double whammy. We're reinforcing them for coming in. And they might touch your hand as you're going down or drop. But it's awesome. And remember, we're playing this at first on leash. So you create so much value for that. That's amazing. I love that. And your dog's telling you you've brought great value for that. When you train, like in our Recallers program, everything is in a layer. So the hand target is a layer that actually helps the collar grab because the dog associates your hands with good things. Everything's in a layer. And so you've just experienced the interactions of those layers, which I love that you picked up that nuance. It's brilliant. It's not a bad thing. It's a good thing. Okay. All right. The next question. The writing is very, very small. What's the difference between a marker and a location-specific marker? So it's a location-specific reinforcement marker. Location-specific tells the dog exactly every single time you will look here for your reinforcement. So if I say the word cook, you know, it's going to be a delivery service. You don't have to move any further. Now, there's a lot of different markers.

And why we want to use markers in dog training is because they're a bridge between the dog making a good choice and the reinforcement happening. Because learning happens through that timeline. And if they make a good choice, and let's say we want them to, like, put their paw in a certain place, they make that good choice. And then we come in with the food and the paw moves off that spot. And then we feed them while we've just fed them for moving off it. The marker is a bridge, which is what a lot of marine mammals will call their marker. It's a bridge between the behavior, the choice the dog made that we love, and them getting the reinforcement. So the marker is specific to that behavior. So all markers are the same in that way. Like a clicker, a whistle, the word good, good boy. I don't know what other words people might use for super. I use, you know, I'll use super a lot with my dogs. So there's a lot of different words that tell the dog what you just did I love. A location-specific reinforcement marker tells the dog, yes, that was correct. And here's where the reinforcement can be found. And there'll be several different location-specific reinforcement markers that we're going to show you over the course of the connected dog. So that's a super great question. Thank you. Okay. So there was a question I want to get to here. This is a great question. And it leads right into what I'm going to teach today. Today was supposed to be just about answering questions, but I can't help myself. If I have the opportunity to be in front of, now we have 600 people here, I want to share something to bring clarity to everybody's dog training. I hope you are all watching the connected dog, but I promise this is going to be really critical information for everybody. So here's the question that will lead into what I want to teach today. My question is what to do when the environment exceeds my value. There are times when my dogs will not accept food. Example, when we're out on the grass, they see a rabbit or a squirrel in my yard. How do we get past this? She, so she is, she's, I'm not sure what this sentence means, but so that's the question. How do we get past this? How many of you listening or watching this have that problem? We want to be reinforcement-based dog trainers. We want to not say, no, we want to not correct our dog. But what do we do when the value of the reinforcement is higher, or excuse me, is, it doesn't, it doesn't compare to the bunny. Have any of you experienced that? Just let me know in the comments. And if you have, let me know in what way. Is it bunnies? Is it squirrels? Is it wildlife?

Like, maybe, like with this, it's that fly ball. It's other dogs running. That there is no reinforcement when she first started the sport that would compare to that. So, no other, nobody else has that? Oh, phew. Okay, a couple of you. Because I'm like, nobody. Okay, well then, maybe I prepared all of this for nothing. Phew! Okay, some of you have said that. Okay. Anytime the cat walks into the room, that's awesome. All right. So, I'm going to share what I have prepared for you today. And I want you to think about the effectiveness of dog training. And I believe it comes down to three things. And all three of those things have a million other things under them. I believe human mechanics is 50% of it. And the reinforcement for the dog is 30%. And the drive of the dog is 20%. 100% of those numbers is my made up guess. This is not from a science book. I love to point out what, when I'm sharing things that are not science, this is my observation. But what does that mean? Human mechanics are how you can be present to the training. How you can be able to effectively get the reinforcement to the dog without the dog doing other things in between. So, somebody like myself, who have been focused on reinforcement-based dog training for more than 30 years now, who has not allowed... If somebody said the only way to train that is with punishment, I would say it's not worth training it. But if I really wanted it, how could I train it without that punishment? My brain has been working this way for 30 years. Therefore, my mechanics with dogs is so much better than it was 30 years ago. For some of you listening to this, you might be brand new to dog training. So, if I'm saying 50% of the effectiveness is your mechanics, you might go, Oh, I'm sunk. My dog, how are they? Why am I telling you that? Because I want you to give yourself grace. You cannot possibly be as good at reinforcing as I can be because I've lived it for so many years. But does that mean you can't train your dog? Absolutely not. Because I believe if you can get 10% of each of these, you will be an effective dog trainer. And the more you learn about the use of reinforcement in training, the better you will get. Human mechanics is the bomb. And knowing that, you can now, I hope, be relaxed around your 10-week-old puppy who isn't getting it. It's not the puppy. It's the puppy and your skills together. So, 50% is all the things that go under the human mechanics. 30% is the reinforcement that we're giving the dog or that the dog's getting from their environment. And 20% is the dog.

So, if I'm trying to train a border collie to want to drive to a tennis ball, it will be somewhat easier than training maybe a sighthound. Does that mean a sighthound can't do it? No. It just means that my use of the reinforcement, my mechanics have got to be better. So, when people say, oh, that was my once-in-a-lifetime dog. Every dog I've ever owned has been my once-in-a-lifetime dog because I recognize that the dog has so little to do with the equation and the effectiveness of dog training. Does that make sense? Is that little equation? Is there any aha moments here that you guys say, oh, wait, I get it? Or is this just me talking in circles because it's just my guesstimation? Okay. The other thing about this equation is this is why you will see, like in dog sports, a dog and handler team that are amazing, but that the handler has never got that kind of success with any dog after. Because the drive of the dog is unbelievable. Or when I say drives, the drives is the drive for food, the drive for toy, the drive for wanting to work with man or woman, the drive for, you know. So, it's all the drives. It's not just how excitable the dog is. It's all of the innate internal drives. So, if that once-in-a-lifetime dog is just amazing, it can make that trainer that doesn't have great mechanics look so much better than they are, which unfortunately you get knocked down a couple pegs when you get your next dog and you realize, I've got work to do. Okay? So, I wanted to put that out there to just let you see it's not the dog. And because 50% of it is us, there's promise and hope in getting better. Okay. Now, I want to talk about reinforcement. I said 30% of it is reinforcement. 30%. And what am I talking about reinforcement? I'm going to break that down for you right now. The intensity of the reinforcement is part the value. So, if you are training right now, when I'm going to train today, I've got all different types of different reinforcement here. So, the value to the dog. You might say, I've got steak and chicken. But your dog might not like steak and chicken. So, it's what is valuable to the dog. The value is important. And it doesn't mean we always use the best value. It's the value to the dog in what's going on right now. Now, we take that and we multiply that by your rate of reinforcement. So, you might say, I'm doing the collar grab and my dog's just sniffing the floor. Well, is it because you're using boring, dried up kibble? Or is it because you're using high value rewards, but you're only giving him one every five minutes?

The intensity of the reinforcement is what I mean when I talk about reinforcement has a 30% impact on the effectiveness of your training. So, the final thing, the qualifier, the thing that will make this great or not great, once we've got that intensity, is your human mechanics. So, you can have amazing value reinforcement and an amazing value, a rate of reinforcement, but you drop the cookies or you're not present to getting the choice exactly right. So, that's going to maybe lower it a little bit. So, if you're 90% spot on on your human mechanics, the intensity of the reinforcement to the dog is going to drop down a little bit. Does that make sense? Because I'm, you know, I am a science graduate. I have a bachelor degree in science. So, I love going into equations. And sometimes people go, I'm an artist, Susan. I don't want to talk like that. Okay. Okay. So, is it all right if I keep going on this line of thinking? If I go a little bit deeper? Or is this too much? Should I go back to another question? Human mechanics always comes into play. Okay. Inez says it makes sense. And I can keep going. All right. So, I'll go on to the next line of thinking. So, we know now if we go back to effectiveness in dog training. So, I've explained the 30% of the reinforcement. So, now what we want to go to is the effectiveness of that reinforcement now is the intensity. Remember, intensity is value times the rate with the human element on the outside. But we also need to consider the value of the competing reinforcement. So, Donna's question to me here is my dog. I've got really high intensity reinforcement. And I've got it. And I'm giving a high rate. But the bunnies are winning. So, what that all has underlying it is the value of the competing reinforcement. And that's why if we have 100% intensity, we've got great, great value. We're using steak and chicken and these balls that most dogs just love. So, we have 100% in the value department. Yeah, 100%. And we're at a training class. And so, there is on a scale of 1 to 10, it's just a slightly distracting. If it's only slightly distracting, the intensity now of your reinforcement has dropped to just 50%. Just 50%. On a scale of 1 to 10. So, then if we amp this up and we go to a dog park, now at a scale of 1 to 10, the competing reinforcement is a 10. And there's dogs jumping each other. There's dogs whipping around. There's people throwing Frisbees for the dog. And your dog said, what was previously exciting to me no longer has any value. Sorry. And so, what can we now multiply all that?

What if you go to the dog park and all you have is belly button lint to reinforce your dog? You now have, let's call it, 0% chance of getting any kind of response from your dog at the dog park. So, you need to consider the intensity of the reinforcement and the value of the competing reinforcement. Which is why, if I could tell you, instead of dog park, let's say that's what we call the training den. You're training in your little enclosed environment, which in the connected dog, we encourage you to set up a training den. So, now, instead of on a scale of 1, that would be the competing reinforcement. The environment is always going to have at least a 1, right? Because there's always going to be a floor to sniff. It's never going to be 0. We can't train in a vacuum. But to get 100% effectiveness of our reinforcement, we need that the competing reinforcement has got to be as close to 1 as possible. And how do we get that when there's bunnies? This is the beauty of how we train. Is that we build for our dogs what I like to call environmental neutrality. And what does that mean? That means that we train in a low environment or low distraction environment. And when we're training in our training den in that low distraction environment, what happens is the intensity of the value of the food can drop down. We don't need 100. So, I'm not going to use the highest value thing I have. I'm going to use one of the lower value things I have. And I'm going to grow that dog's focus for me in the training den. And then we just add more and more layers until you get to a place where I am with my dogs that I can take them and bunnies. Like they have to stop for bunnies. A bunny actually hit my puppy in the shoulder as he was bolting through the bushes. So, and he was like, did you see that? Six months ago, he would have been on that bunny's trail just flying. Six months ago, he would have been on that. Six months ago, he would have been on that. So, it's the layers upon layers of the dog having success in lower, where the value of the environment is low. And then we just keep building and building and building on that, right? And then I can go to any place where there's competing reinforcement. There might be, for example, fly ball is a new competing reinforcement for this. So, although deer and bunnies no longer have any power for her, the other fly ball dogs do. And so, I just have to go back to highest value intensity. But I'm going to lower the value of the distraction by getting further away from it. Okay? So, we have talked about this a lot on my podcast.

But I want you to understand it's okay right now that your dog isn't taking food when there's bunnies around. You need to not try to train when there's bunnies around. Okay. How can we do this without edible rewards? So, Annie, I'm not sure why you don't have edible rewards. But I'm pretty confident that your dog eats. I bet you at some point your dog eats. And so, you need to make sure that you build the value of what he eats up to a level where you do have edible rewards. So, whatever your dog is eating is your reinforcement. And you just have to build that into your training. Young lady, thank you. Okay. Meanwhile, you can use toys to do any of this. Okay. How can we objectively rate you in the numerator? All right. Let me go back to my... In what... Oh, I have to get that question off now. In what context are you meaning? So... Are we back to... So, the value of competing reinforcement... Oh, probably here. Where am I? Sorry. There. How can you objectively rate your human mechanics? You can ask somebody else to help you with that. But your dog will be the one that tells you how effective is your training in all different locations. I like... I video every training session I have. And I can effectively evaluate how my mechanics are doing. Okay. So, another question. My favorite... My puppy's 11... Who is 11-week-old stray. Favorite tug toy is a leash. Any tips? It seems all puppies training should be on a leash. So, I can't tell you how many comments we had on episode number one when we were doing collar grab that the dog was grabbing the leash. So, I'm going to show you... I'll get... I'm going to do a little demo here. And I will show you what... So, let's just talk about it from the point of view of what I just shared with you first before I get the dog out. So, if we know that the intensity of reinforcement is the value of the reinforcement to the dog to the rate of reinforcement. We know that. All right. We're going to go up here. The value of competing reinforcements. If the dog is grabbing the leash, the value of the competing reinforcement is probably, what, five? So, it's lowering the intensity of the reinforcement. What can we do? What I'm going to do is I'm going to check in. Is my value as high as it possibly can be? And these are both scored on a one to ten. So, are you... If I was training with a kibble, my rate of reinforcement was high. I wouldn't be anywhere near a hundred. So, kibble would be one. My rate of reinforcement would be... Even if it's a perfect ten out of ten. The intensity of that reinforcement is going to be ten at the most out of a hundred instead of a hundred.

Therefore, the leash is an eight. We've got a competing reinforcement if you're not fast enough with your cookies. So, what I'm going to do, I'll show you with Electra, is I'm going to go right off. This is a Siberian husky who has not worked with me, who really has... I have no value. So, I'm guessing she'll come out and maybe sniff the floor or look other places. I don't know what she's going to do. I hate to make a knock on Siberian huskies because they're amazingly gifted, talented dogs. And if I said to Jenny, you get her out and do this demo, it would be perfect. Because of all the variabilities that I just talked about that Jenny is taking care of in her relationship. But I have no relationship with this dog. So, let's see how it's going to do. My goal is to do a collar grab. She's not going to grab a leash. Highly unlikely. Would she ever grab a leash? If I presented it as a tug toy. But just for... If I take her out on a leash, is she going to go, oh, I see great value in that leash? No. And so... But she's going to do other things. We'll see if she will look at me. I'm going to come out and I'm going to start with a lower rate of reinforcement and low value rewards for her. First thing I'm going to do is put my dog away. I'm going to change this camera so you guys can see what we're doing. Can you put... There we go. There we go. So, there's the camera. And I'm going to put some good rewards in my pocket. The highest value rewards that we have here. I'm going to start with some lower ones. Okay. So, I'm going to get the laptop. She's sleeping. So, that will add to the intensity of my reinforcement. Okay. So, she's got a little stretch. So, I... Okay. No. She didn't get reinforced from me. So, now she's saying, what? What? I don't really care about you. What's going on? So, this isn't grabbing the leash, but this is probably typical. People are... People's dogs are new. So, grab the leash. Cook. Cook. Cookie. Yeah, that was okay. Thanks. Yeah. What else you got? That was a lower intensity value cookie. All right. So, I'm going to take a week. That's pretty interesting. Now, I'll start that again. I'm going to walk around a little bit. I feel like I'm trying to personify Eeyore as a dog trainer. Grab the leash. Cook. Give a cookie. And then she's like looking off into outer space. What else? What else is there to be doing this area? So, now I'm going to like to grab the leash. Cook. Give a cookie. Look at this Christmas dog. That was a high value of a lawyer. She's like, okay, hang on now. So, if this was a dog who wanted to grab the leash, she's no longer going to do it. Because, of course, I'm going to go to the dog.

So, if they're not a little bit of a dog, they're going to go to the dog. So, if this was a dog who wanted to grab the leash, she's no longer going to do it. Okay. Oh, right. I forgot to tell. I forgot my audio breaks up when I use this little mic. Sorry about that. So, what I wanted you to notice is when I first went out there. Oh, I'll change my camera now. When I first went out there, I had lower value reinforcement. And so, she would like take it and then look around, sniff the ground. That formula. That formula. The value of the reinforcement and the rate of reinforcement. As soon as I went to a higher value reinforcement and I went to a higher rate of reinforcement, all of a sudden, that husky was like, I'm your girl. I'm your girl. What are we doing? Thank you, Electra. Electra is a very well-trained dog, but she just doesn't know me. Right? Okay. Does that make sense? Do you see how that formula is going to help you? And what I hope most of all it's going to do, it's going to help you understand that it's never the dog. But there's always an answer that comes back to us. Our dogs are always doing the best they can with the education we've given them in the environment that we've put them in. We'll talk more in the platinum level about how that formula works while we're working through these games together. Okay? So, let me go back to some of these questions. All right. Marcy says, I already used the word search for my nose work. What suggestions do you have for another word that I could use? You can use any word you want. I like to use for a marker one-syllable words, though. So, chase, because the dog's chasing the food might be a good one. Really doesn't matter what the word is, as long as it's not a word that you use in your dog training somewhere else. Okay? Do you have any other words for a marker for finding food off the floor, Jenny? Yeah. Yeah. Some people say find it. I use find it for finding things that I've hidden, like with the puppy, I hide his bone around the room. So, find it is two syllables, but it's like a clicker. It can, you know, be, yeah. Find. Yeah. You guys put some comments in there. Help a girl out. What are the words you use? My, so, this question, Anne, I hope I've already answered. I'm struggling with my dog's temp. He does not mind me grabbing the collar, but there's no excitement, no tail wagging. He just stands there and takes the treats. So, what is the intensity of reinforcement? What is the competing value of the reinforcement? And competing value of the reinforcement, that could be time of day. Okay.

McKenna.
That could be, if you know that, like if I, if I wanted to, I love to get up at five o'clock in the morning. And if I wanted to train with any of my dogs at that hour, I would have to do a little bit extra work on their part because they are like, this is no hour of the day for anybody to be getting up. So, they wouldn't be as keen to train with me. I could do it because dog training is 50% human mechanics. I could get them excited about it, but it'd be much easier if I was doing it at a different time of day. So, that's all taken into that denominator of competing reinforcement. I like to just stay in bed, mom. That's a competing reinforcement. Okay. So, I got answered that one. Have been using the word break to go for treats. Used to use search. Should I go back to it? I would definitely, if you're using break, like you may have heard me release Electra from the kennel by saying break, then break shouldn't mean find food on the floor and you can be released to find your value, which should be with me. So, I would not, I would not, you might want to come up with a new word in the interim too, instead of, so go for search, but don't use break anymore to mean just you can come out of your crate. You might come up with a new word. Free. Free. Okay. Answer that one. Let's see what else we got. My dog has been trained to get paid on the word yes as her marker. Can I use that instead of cook? I hope by now, Patricia, you understand that there's a difference between marker and location-specific marker. So, cook is a location-specific marker that tells the dog, don't move. I'm coming to you to reinforce you. So, I would definitely, you could still use the word yes as, if you're not, if there's no specificity to the training that you're doing. But, like, I use the word good as a word that doesn't really have any specificity. It just means you are correct. I will give you a reinforcement. It might be a toy. It might be a cookie. It might be at my side. It might be something I throw. Highly unlikely it'd be something I'd throw, because I would use a location-specific marker for that. Okay. Here's a good question I'm going to use here. This one from McKenna. What a beautiful name. Is that really your name? McKenna. I would like to have the name of McKenna. Mine are happy to let me grab the collar, but they don't offer their collar like some of the videos I've seen. What's the secret? Really, McKenna, it is the consistency of your mechanics playing the game with a high-intensity reinforcement. So, high rate of reinforcement with good value rewards. And I want to make it clear.

The denominator of my equation, the competing reinforcement, affects how much intensity you need in your training. So, if I'm training here, I don't need any kind of high-level reinforcement, because it's a quiet environment. There aren't any other dogs. So, any tug toy will do. When I'm training thisie with, there's a sheltie. She loves shelties. So, if there's a sheltie in the environment that's barking, I will use a fluffy toy that's long that I drag it, because I know it's a higher-intensity reinforcement. So, when I talk about we want 100, we want 100 when the environment dictates we need 100. And your goal is to get a lower reinforcement intensity, to get that lower in more and more environments, because then the big guns, so, you know, the honeybee first, for example, for Electra or those balls, I can use when there's a high level of distraction for the dog. Okay. This was a question that was on here. My Frenchies don't wear collars when they go outside. Can I do this with a harness? Yes. You would play the game exactly the same mechanics, but you would use a harness. If you're using a head halter, it would be the same. I would grab, though. I would still grab, like, around the breastplate. So, because grabbing there, it's like a connection point for our dogs. So, I do love to do that. Okay. And if you're somebody like me that sometimes will use a harness with your dogs, then play this game, not just with a collar, play it with a harness as well. My dog, or my dog, my voice is getting, losing it a little bit. Okay. Okay. I don't have a problem, but I'm sure that someone here will have a dog who moves forward when you grab, to grab the cookie. Will we address that later? At first, it's not as, especially when we're playing collar grab, if they move a little bit, I'm not that concerned because in episode three and four, we will make sure that that doesn't happen. Right? And it has to do with the evaluation gap that we identified as part of the training. Okay. Okay. I've noticed in the video that Susan's grabbing the leash and not the collar, but I've seen her demonstrate this in the past where she actually grabs a collar, which will work. So, grabbing the leash gives us an opportunity to evaluate the dog's temp, T-E-M-P. And if by grabbing the leash, their ears still stay up and their eyes are brighter and their tail stays up and they're still like, this is good. Then that gives me permission to maybe grab a little lower and eventually grab the collar.

What I found is with some of our students, when we went right for the collar, some of the dogs would back up and go, I don't feel comfortable with this game. And so, if I grabbed the leash, that dog would show me signs of that lack of comfort by maybe pinning their ears or, you know, they wouldn't give me as dramatic a physical reaction as if I'd grabbed the collar. But they would show me enough that I would say, okay, we're just going to do a lot of leash grabs. And then the dog is going to, because we're conditioning, we're conditioning a positive emotional state in the dog. When that woman touches my leash, it's a good day for me. I got high intensity rewards. This is really, I like this. So, then they're going to look forward to the leash grab, which means when you eventually go to touch the collar, it will be absolutely, you know, pleasant bill for them. They really aren't going to, they're not just going to, not going to care. They're going to be excited by it. Okay. Yeah, that was a long way of me saying that the grabbing the leash is a smaller layer. Sally, you would have been more efficient sitting here. Thank you. Okay. I answered that one. I answered that one. Okay. I think I've answered all of the questions that I was given. Oh, something. There's a question here about doing this with a small dog. So, if you have a really, really small puppy, you might want to start doing it on the floor. And until, and eventually when you're standing up, because if you're, you know, there's a lot of really tiny breeds out there. So, if you get a tiny breed that is a young puppy, then that's a long way down. So, I definitely would start this on my knees, on the ground, repeating, touch the leash before I would reach. Because you're reaching, the collar, you know, could be tiny. And so, we want to grab the leash, get that built up before we build up to anything else. Okay. Do you have any more over there? Number four. Number four. Number four. Number four. It's, you know, it's these layers, understanding the nuances of when to use high value food rewards. And when you can go to a lower value rate of reinforcement and how to recognize that this, the environment is calling your dog's name. Like the nuances of how those three things play out is what's going to allow you to get to that place, what I called environmental neutrality, without the use of physical punishment. Right? Like, I don't believe when people, you know, people will say about the way that we train dogs that you, that reinforcement-based dog training won't work on all dogs. It won't work on all. All dogs are different.

They're going to need different techniques. You have to, all dogs are different. Sure. They all have different drives. Reinforcement-based dog training works for all of them though. Don't let anybody tell you any different. Don't let anybody tell you any different. Okay? So, if you haven't seen the Connected Dog Season of Nuance, the first two episodes that are available, that will help you. And if you really are liking the kind of level of detail that I'm talking about, then you probably should be in the platinum level of the Connected Dog. And we, and you don't have to be on the Zooms live because there's actually, the platinum level has its own classroom. So, you know, we put challenges in there. We put different, the Zoom calls will be in there. So, anyway. Oh, another question. Just before I was signing off, there's another question that came on. Interested in how we reduce feeding, reduce the treats. So, if you have a small dog, you're going to have to cut your treats really, really small and mix in things that are really healthy for the dog. Carrots, cauliflower. No, maybe not raw cauliflower. Raw cauliflower, not good for dogs. So, that would be something. And that goes into the intensity of reinforcement. We don't need the intensity of reinforcement if we have a low value of distraction in the environment. Okay. Okay. Portugal. My sister's in Portugal right now. Hello from Portugal. So, don't, you know, everybody looks through, all professional dog trainers have a bias. My bias is towards, we don't really have the right to physically manipulate, punish dogs. And so, if we want our dogs to fit into our world, especially those of us that do sports, then we have to be more innovative in our approaches to getting the dog to be on board with what we want to do. It's possible. It's absolutely possible. What we know now about it is like light years ahead of what we knew 25 years ago. And 25 years from now, I'm still going to be digging for more nuances and how we can help dogs live their best life without intimidation or physical corrections. Okay. What I would like from you now is if there was any aha moments for you during this live, I would love for you to go to my YouTube page or my, excuse me, my Facebook page and facebook.com forward slash. Oh, that's not it. My team will put a link in there. And write what your big takeaway was. What was the thing that was the, oh my gosh, why didn't I think of that? Oh my gosh, that's common sense. Oh my gosh. I'm going to ponder this and see how this works for my dog.
