You are absolutely correct, Catherine. If your dog chooses not to do what you ask and then you trump the value of reinforcement they're getting at the time, it is luring, which is why I call it training triage. It's not a practice. It's not good reinforcement-based dog training. It actually is really poor reinforcement-based dog training, but it's in the moment dog training. It's the dog training that you do to keep your dog safe or other dogs safe or other people safe. It's the training you do to stop the reinforcement the dog is getting in the moment. It's triage because just like using a belt and a stick to fix a broken bone in your leg, it's not a practice you're going to do long-term. It's something you're going to do to fix what's broken in the moment and then plan and take action to get better training rehab, aka a better reinforcement-based training program.
