all right so um malligator mom i never asked you but it sounds like obvious where you got that name from but i still need to ask you in case for wonder malligator mom i assume you have a few malinois right so tell us a little bit about uh your dogs and um how you got with that you know name why you made a channel about being a malligator mom yeah absolutely um so i i have four i have four malinois yeah and a lot of people think that the malligator mom portion of that name would play into the fact that i have multiple malinois but it actually doesn't um the reason i went with that was because i actually am also a mother of four children oh wow so i felt like there was nobody out there in the space that i could identify with being um you know interested in this breed and training and protection dogs but also being a mom and playing the role of mother and having four children and and being able to have those two worlds coexist it felt like that wasn't possible and i didn't see anybody else doing it um and so that's kind of where the name play comes in wow um i got into let us read a little bit you got four kids and a bunch of how do you handle it no i mean i got one and you know one two crazy malamas that's more than plenty how do you do that how do you do that that's phenomenal um so some days i don't some days some days i don't want to get out of it um it is a lot it is a lot and it's definitely a lifestyle right like like it has changed every aspect of my day so um getting into this breed i think i was well suited for it because i already managed a big family i already knew about structure and routine and making things happen that way and so this kind of was natural for me in that in that fit it was a good fit for me i took to it i think pretty easily but um but yeah four kids um four malinois is a lot it's a lifestyle it is all day every day it is not easy um but i mean it's also an incredible source of joy so you know have my younger kids are really um they're interested in the dogs my two older kids i think were a little older that they just weren't what age are they oh so okay my oldest daughter is 20 and then i have an 18 year old son and then a 13 year old son and an eight year old daughter so the older two not not so much into the dogs they were teenagers into their own thing um but the younger two like working with the dogs and so it's something we get to do together and it's become a lot of fun so wow wow i mean still still i don't know how you even do that you know how do you give everybody the attention they need because the malinois they want your attention all day

맞아요. 오, 네. 그래서 아이들을 돌보다 보면 '아, 맞다,' 이런 생각이 들죠. 아직 개들 밥도 줘야 하고, 조금 더 훈련도 시켜야 하고, 아직 해야 할 일이 남았구나 하고요. 네. 가끔 평화를 찾으시나요? 개와 아이들과 함께하지 않을 때, 당신만의 자유 시간은 어떻게 보내시나요? 어디로 가시나요? 개도 없고 아이들도 없을 때, 그럴 땐 뭘 하시나요? 음, 그래서 아이들과 말리노이즈와 함께 하루 중 틈을 내기가 정말 어렵지만, 저는 정말 즐겨요. 음, 이건 좀 이상하게 들릴지 모르겠지만, 저는 개들 배변 시간마다 밖에 나가는 걸 정말 좋아해요. 안으로 다시 들어가서 다른 일을 처리할 필요가 없도록 그 시간을 10분이나 15분 정도 늘리기도 해요. 가끔은 그냥 앉아서 개들을 지켜보기도 하고요. 그냥 그대로 두기도 하고요. 그냥 밖의 풍경을 즐기면서 훈련이나 일, 혹은 다른 걱정거리 없이 개들과 함께 잠시 여유를 갖는 거죠. 그래서 저는 그 일상 속의 작은 순간들을 최대한 활용하려고 노력해요. 다들 가지고 있죠. 네, 그냥 인지를 못 할 뿐이에요. 당신처럼 바쁜 사람이면 이미 짐작하셨을 텐데 말이죠. 왜냐하면 저도 말씀드렸듯이 강아지 몇 마리와 아이가 있는데, 거기에 더해서 틱톡 채널도 운영하시잖아요. 영상을 일주일에 몇 번이나 올리시는지는 모르겠지만, 팔로워가 70만 명이 넘으시더라고요. 제 말은, 그건 대단할 뿐만 아니라 제가 그 정도 규모의 소셜 미디어 채널을 운영하는 데 무엇이 필요한지 알기 때문에 더 대단하다는 거예요. 왜냐하면 영상을 편집해야 하고, 아이디어를 생각해내야 하고, 게시해야 하고, 사람들에게 반응도 해야 하니까요. 그러니까 네, 그것도 당신이 하시는 일 중 하나죠. 네, 맞아요. 정말 많은 일이죠. 제가 전부 직접 관리하고 있어요. 댓글에 답글 다는 것도 항상 저예요. 다른 사람이 하는 게 아니라 항상 제가 직접 하는 거예요. 음, 그래도 저는 그게 감당할 만하다고 생각해요. 왜냐하면 많은 부분이 아주 자연스럽게 이루어지거든요. 그냥 제가 하고 있는 일이나 저와 관련된 것들을 보여주는 거니까요. 콘텐츠로 만들 수 있겠다 싶은 재미있는 영상들도 포착하고요. 다 아주 자연스러운 것들이지, 작정하고 만든 건 별로 없어요. 그냥 제 삶을 보여주는 거죠. 공감해주시면 감사한 거고요. 네, 제가 처음 본 당신의 영상이 일종의 패러디였던 것 같은데, 그때는 그걸 몰랐거든요. 틱톡 영상에 당신이 나타났는데 십만 달러짜리 강아지를 샀다고 하셨죠. 저는 그렇게 믿었어요. 그러고는 뭐든 다 할 수 있다고 하길래, 와, 저 사람은 정말 말리노이즈를 키우면서 모든 걸 다 안다고 생각하는 무식한 사람의 전형을 보여주는 건가 싶었어요. 물론 나중에 보니 당신이 그냥 장난을 치고 있었던 거였지만, 그때는 몰랐죠.
right oh yeah so then the kids then you know when you're doing the kids you're thinking oh that's right i still have to feed them out i still have to train them a little bit i still have to get them working yeah do you find peace sometimes what is your like where is your free space go to when you have some time you're like no it's not gonna be dogs and kids what is your go-to then um so trying to find a moment in the day with kids and malinois is really hard to do but i really enjoy i mean this is going to sound kind of weird but i really just enjoy getting out for like their the dog's potty breaks and i'll extend them for like 10 or 15 minutes so i don't have to go back inside and deal with anything and i'll just sit sometimes and just watch them you know and just let them and just kind of enjoy the outside and just kind of take in a minute with the dogs without training or working or worrying about anything else and so i try to just take advantage of those everyday little moments we all have them yeah just don't recognize you you would assume somebody as busy as you are i can already imagine right because like i said i have a few and a kid but on top of that you run a channel on tick tock and you post videos i don't know how many how many times a week but you got over 700 000 followers i mean that's not only amazing i know what it takes to run a social media channel and of that magnitude that you have that comes on top of it right because you got to edit the video you got to come up with the idea you got to post it you got to you know react to people so yeah that's also something you do yeah yeah i mean it it is a lot i do manage it all completely myself it's always me responding to you it's not somebody else it's always me on there um yeah but i think i think it's been manageable because a lot of that is just very organic i'm just showing what i'm doing how things that are relating to me funny clips i might capture that i can turn into content like it's all very organic it's not a lot of like on purpose stuff you know it's just like this is my show of a life you know like if you identify with it great you know yeah so the first video the first clip that i saw of you was i think it was kind of some kind of parody but i i didn't know at that point so i saw you coming on screen in a tick tock video and then you bought a hundred thousand dollar puppy you said i think i believe it was and then it was like yeah i know it's how to do everything and i was like wow is it like what a stereotype of a dumb person getting into you know a malinois and and assuming but of course you were

하지만 확실히 정말 공감 가는 내용이었어요. 왜냐하면 가끔 길에서 사람들을 만나면 사람들이 질문하는 것들이 있거든요. 말리노이즈를 그냥 평범한 개로 생각하거나 반대로 최고의 무기라고 생각하는 등 워킹독에 대한 오해가 정말 많거든요. 특히 워킹독에 대해서요. 그래서 공감이 많이 갔고 '아, 이 사람은 진짜 개에 대해 잘 아는구나' 싶었죠. 그래서 사람들이 왜 당신의 콘텐츠를 알아보고 좋아하는지 알겠더라고요. 이 채널을 운영하신 지 얼마나 되셨나요? 팔로워가 70만 명이라니 정말 많네요. 음, 틱톡을 시작한 지 2년, 아니 2년 반 정도 된 것 같아요. 아, 코로나 때 시작하셨군요. 네, 맞아요. 분명 진화하는 과정이었죠. 틱톡은 결코 쉽지 않아요. 매우 냉혹하죠. 사람들은 당신을 좋아하거나 아니면 아주 싫어해서 대놓고 싫다고 말하니까요. 네, 저도 욕을 많이 먹었어요. 솔직히 말해서 소셜 미디어에 자신을 드러내는 사람이라면 누구나 자기가 하는 일을 싫어하거나 영상을 문맥과 상관없이 가져가서 왜곡하는 사람들을 겪게 되죠. 콘텐츠 전체를 보려 하지 않고, 자신이 싫어하는 영상 한 클립에만 집중하는 경우 말이에요. 물론 욕도 많이 먹지만, 그래도 많은 분이 제가 공유하는 내용에 공감해 주신다고 생각해요. 왜냐하면 제 경험이나 제가 가진 지식을 공유하는 사람이 많지 않다고 생각하거든요. 제가 이 견종을 키우려고 했을 때, 아이를 키우거나 바쁜 일상을 보내면서 이 개들을 어떻게 돌봐야 할지 보여주는 사람은 거의 없었거든요. 과연 그런 생활 속에서 이 견종들과 함께하는 게 가능할까 싶었는데, 아무도 그런 정보를 주는 사람이 없더라고요. 그것 때문에 사실 몇 년 동안이나 제가 원하는 그 견종을 키우지 못했어요. 왜냐하면 조사를 정말 많이 했거든요. 올바른 결정을 내리고 싶었죠. 음, 그런데 막상 실행에 옮기기가 두려웠어요. 주변에 하는 사람이 아무도 없었거든요. 그리고 음, 많은…, 말을 조심해야겠네요. 누구의 기분도 상하게 하고 싶지 않지만, 진입장벽이 정말 높아요. 음, 엘리트주의적인 태도가 만연한 것 같아요. 아, 맞아요. 사실 이 부분은 저희가 좀
just making fun of it but i didn't know at that point but definitely very relatable because you know sometimes people uh you know when you go on the street and people the question that they ask about you know malinois they don't see it as a working dog sometimes they think it's the the average dog or the opposite they think it's like the ultimate weapon so there's so many misconceptions about dogs especially working dogs and uh yeah i thought i could really relate to it and it's like oh then of course i saw oh there's somebody that actually knows about dogs and just you know one of it so i could see where you uh you know you have people recognizing your content and liking it so i don't know how long have you been running this channel because 700 000 that's a lot a lot of followers um um i think i think i got onto tick tock two years ago maybe two and a half years ago huh when corona came then yeah yeah yeah yeah um so it's definitely been like an evolution right and and it's it's been a grind like tick tock is is not easy um it's it's very brutal like people people either either love you or they hate you and they tell you they hate you yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah i i've gotten a lot of crap i'm not gonna lie i mean i think a lot of people that put themselves out there on social media they do you know you're just gonna get people that don't like what you're doing or who take a clip completely out of context um or don't bother to look at what you're actually presenting you know as far as content is concerned just focused on one clip that they don't like um you know you get a lot of crap for sure but i think that that overall people have been able to identify with with what i'm sharing because again i don't feel like there's a lot of people out there sharing my experience my side of what i have to offer um like like when i was trying to get into the breed i wasn't seeing a lot of people out there who had kids right or had like these busy lifestyles how do you incorporate these dogs into all of that is it even possible i didn't see anybody out there doing it and it actually prevented me from getting into the breed for years before i wanted to because i've been doing all my research you know like i wanted to make the right decision um and i was afraid to actually do it because i didn't see anybody else out there doing it and um there was a lot of um i have to be careful how i word this i don't want to piss anybody off but there's a lot of gatekeeping um there's a lot of elitist attitude i think around the oh yeah yeah yeah actually i think we should

이야기해 봐야 할 것 같아요. 논란이 좀 있더라도 숨기지 마세요. 정말 흥미로운 주제라고 생각해요. 작업견 커뮤니티나 세계, 뭐라 부르든 그곳에 발을 들이는 건 큰 도전이죠. 제가 처음 클럽에 들어갔을 때 경험을 말씀드릴게요. 벨기에 링 클럽에 처음 갔을 때, 사람들이 '쟤는 뭐지? 뭘 원하는 거지?' 하는 눈빛으로 쳐다봤어요. 네, 그리고 흘끗 쳐다보고는 그냥 자기 할 일을 계속하더군요. 누구 하나 '안녕하세요, 잘 지내세요?'라거나 '뭐 도와드릴까요? 보시는 게 마음에 드시나요? 관심 있으신가요?'라고 묻는 사람이 없었어요. 아니요, 전혀요. 제가 직접 '저기요, 질문 좀 해도 될까요?'라고 해야 그제야 '뭐, 뭔데?' 하는 식이었죠. 그러고는 '아, 저도 그런 개를 한 마리 키우고 싶어서요'라고 하면 거의 무시하는 분위기였어요. 그게 제 첫 경험이었죠. 그리고 당시 저는 경찰이었는데, 경찰견 부서에는 소속되어 있지 않았어요. 그 이유 때문에 경찰견 부대 아는 사람이 한 명도 없었죠. 길에서 경찰견 부대 사람들을 마주쳐도 그들은 사람들을 잘 쳐다보지 않았거든요. 마치 그들은 건드릴 수 없는 존재처럼 보였어요. 그들과 친해지기가 정말 어렵게 느껴졌죠. 그리고 여전히, 지구 반대편인 미국에서 당신이 이런 말을 하는 걸 들으니 신기하네요. 전 유럽에 사는데 말이죠. 마치 이 커뮤니티가 꽤 폐쇄적이라는 느낌을 받으셨군요. 말씀하신 것처럼요. 게이트키핑(진입 장벽)에 관해서요. 당신이 겪었던 경험에 대해 저희에게 조금 이야기해 주시겠어요? 그 게이트키핑에 대해 처음 어떤 생각이 드셨나요? 어떻게 하면 여기에 들어갈 수 있을까 싶었나요, 아니면 저 사람들은 도대체 뭐가 문제지 싶었나요? 제 학생들도 그렇고, 그 부분에 대해 좀 더 말씀해 주시겠어요? 확실히 매우 폐쇄적인 집단이긴 해요. 제 생각에는 말리노이즈를 키운다는 것이 그 이면의 큰 이유 중 하나인 것 같아요. 이런 엘리트 의식을 가진 사람들, 즉 게이트키퍼들에게 말리노이즈는 자신을 특별하게 만들어주는 존재인 것 같아요. 그래서 그들은 마음의 문을 열고 싶어 하지 않죠. 만약 우리 모두가 특별하다면, 우리 모두 특별한 거잖아요. 그러니까 이건 자신을 특별하게 만들어주는 무언가라고 생각하는 거죠. 그들은 그 비밀을 지키고 싶어 하고, 다른 사람들이 성공하는 것을 보고 싶어 하지 않아요. 거기에는 몇 가지 요인이 작용한다고 생각해요. 솔직히 말해서 저는 그런 게이트키핑 태도를 가진 사람들을 몇 명 만났는데, 그들의 본심은 선하다고 생각해요. 그들은 이런 개들이 과도하게 번식되거나, 객관적으로 개를 키우면 안 되는 사람들의 손에 들어가는 것을 보고 걱정하는 거죠.
talk about this a little bit of controversy don't don't hold back i think it's a very interesting topic i think you know going it going into the working dog community or world whatever they call it is a huge step and i'll tell you a little bit of my experience when i entered the club the first time belgium ring club and they they just look at you like what is he what does he want like yeah and then they just give you a glance like yeah and then they just continue and nobody says hey how you doing or hey can we help you with something do you like what you see are you interested in this no no no it was none of that you have to like hey guys can i ask a question and then they would go like what what up and then uh that's that's something really interesting you do you you know i also want to have one of those dogs and then it's like they ignore you almost that was like my first experience like and then you know i was at the police and uh i wasn't at the canine unit and i didn't know anyone at the canine unit for that reason because if you would meet somebody at the canine unit i saw them on the street but they didn't really look at some people it like it's like they were untouchable almost like it seemed like it's hard to connect with these people and and still i mean hearing you say this on the other side of the planet in the us i live in europe i do feel like you have the same feeling like oh this community is is kind of closed and like you say gatekeeper so share me a little bit about uh share us a little bit about the experience that you have about the gatekeeping what was it your first thought on oh how do i get in this or what is what's wrong with these people my students tell me a little bit about it it's it's definitely a very closed off group i think um i think that i think that a lot of the reason behind that is that um having a malinois i think to these to a lot of these more elitist type people these gatekeepers is something that makes them very special and so they don't they don't really want to open up you know if we're if you were special we're all special right so it's it's kind of like this is something that makes me really special and they want to guard that secret um they don't want to see other people succeed and i think you know there's a there's a few things that play there honestly you know i i do i have met some people who have this gatekeeping attitude who i actually think that their heart is in the right place i think that they see these dogs being overbred um finding their ways you know

'워킹독 분야에 입문하고 싶어요'라고 할 때 어떤 경험을 하셨는지 정말 궁금해요. 여러분들의 이야기가 듣고 싶어요. 저의 경우도 '아, 여기는 정말 쉽지 않겠구나'라는 생각이 들었거든요. 그래서 제가 온라인으로 공부하기 시작했고, 유튜브를 찾아보고, 아니면 뭐든 읽으면서 공부하기 시작했던 거예요. 그런 이유로 제가 스스로 공부를 시작하게 된 거죠. 완전 초보자와 경험이 있는 사람 사이에는 정말 큰 간극이 있다고 느꼈기 때문에 경험이 있는 분들에게 '그 지식 좀 나눠주실래요?'라고 물어도 딱히 그런 일은 일어나지 않을 것 같았어요 그래서 독학을 해야 했죠. 그런데 틱톡인가 인스타그램인가, 아니면 둘 다였나, 거기서 우연히 당신 영상을 봤어요 혹시 새 영화 '도그'에 대해 언급하시는 내용이었나요? 맞아요, 그 영화 제목이 '도그'였죠. 저는 아직 못 봤는데, 혹시 보셨나요? 네, 봤습니다. 오 그렇군요, 영화는 좋았나요? 정말 좋았어요. 마음에 들었습니다. 다행이네요. 요즘은 개가 나오는 영화를 보면 가끔 이런 생각이 들어서요 예전에는 영화를 즐겼는데, 이제는 '아, 저건 대역을 썼구나, 개가 실제로 하는 게 아니네'라는 생각이 들거든요 개를 훈련하게 되니까 확실히 기분이 완전히 다르네요. 그런데 그 영상에서 '이 영화 좀 보세요'라고 하시는 걸 들었거든요 혹시 말리누아를 보호하려고 그러신 건가요? 그렇게 말씀하신 이유가 무엇인가요? 네, 앞서 말씀드렸듯이 저도 어느 정도 공감이 가는 부분이 있어서 그랬던 거예요. 그래서 그렇게 말했던 거죠 그들의 마음이 나쁜 의도는 아니라고 생각해요. 저도 어느 정도는 진입 장벽을 높이는 듯한 그 느낌에 공감하거든요 왜냐하면 우리는 이런 개들을 많이 보니까요. 유럽은 어떤지 모르겠지만, 여기 미국에서는 보호소에 있는 말리누아들을 정말 많이 보거든요 이런 개들이 키우는 데 무엇이 필요한지 전혀 모르는 사람들의 손에 들어가는 경우가 많아요 결국 상황이 나빠지는 거죠. 그래서 '이 개들은 보통의 반려견들과는 다르니 조금 더 주의가 필요하다'라는 식으로 보호하려는 그 마음에는 공감합니다 네, 그 부분이 공감이 되지만, 동시에 우리는 미묘한 줄타기를 해야 한다고 생각해요 사실 저는 많은 사람이 말리누아를 잘 키울 수 있다고 생각하거든요 충분히 성공적으로 키울 수 있는 사람들인데,
into the hands of people who who should not have them who objectively should not have them and so their heart's in the right place but they have a bad way of coming across the community is not very welcoming that was my experience it was not a welcoming community so let me ask you now because it's it's really true and i think people that are watching this can make a comment like what their first experience was was it good or was it bad like hey i want to get into the working dog i'd love to hear from you guys how that went like for me it was also like oh this is going to be tough and that's why i started studying online and started studying youtube and started studying you know or read whatever you could get into because i did feel there was like this huge gap between somebody as a complete novice and then somebody has experience hey you want to share some of that knowledge you have that wasn't really going to happen that's what i felt so i had to self-study but uh i just saw a clip of you uh on um i don't know was it tick tock or instagram maybe both where you were making comments about the new movie uh dog right yes yeah that's what it called i haven't seen it yet have you seen it i have yeah oh okay and was it good i thought it was great yeah i liked it okay because sometimes when i look at dog movies now before i used to enjoy them now i was like ah they put down tracks on them you know the dog's not really doing this like it's a whole different feeling now that you train dogs but i did hear you say like hey watch that so are you also protecting a little bit the melon what are you just what was your reason to do that yeah i mean i i do like i said i can identify with with some of that that's why i was saying like i don't think their heart's in the wrong place i i can identify with that feeling of gatekeeping a little bit right because we do see a lot of these dogs especially i don't know if it's what it's like in europe but here in the states we see a lot of these dogs in shelters um a lot of these dogs just get into the hands of people who don't understand what it takes and and it's just a bad situation so i do identify with a level of that gatekeeping that protective like hey you know like these dogs aren't your average dog they do require you know a little bit more um and so i identify with that but you know at the same time it's it's it's trying to walk this fine line between you know i i actually think a lot of people can have a malinois and be very successful with it

and i hate to see those people missing out on that experience yeah because of the unwelcoming community yeah like somebody i just see in the comments they did a lot of research i was thinking i wasn't good enough you can imagine how many people would think oh i'm not good enough for a malinois right that was neat if i'm too like inexperienced and all that kind of stuff and at the end of the day you know i i started from minus zero also since if you're afraid of dogs and then you have to go train a malawa i mean that's a little bit of a problem and it definitely proved to be a problem at first because i the very first dog that i got was actually an adult and um that didn't work out really well i looked at it and yeah and i was like oh i'm afraid of this dog gotta return it so yeah that was my first experience so yeah you can imagine that what that does to your self-confidence but um yeah thinking thinking of it um as you know the uh going into dog sports i was just having a conversation with an elite trainer like one of the best in the world and um that person told me hey when i have you know a litter or when i would have you know top puppies i'd never have somebody pick you know a very high drive puppy as an inexperienced handler and i said well why why not well of course because it's gonna go wrong they're gonna mess it up or they yes but you know it depends right because some people might have you know the ability to develop skills in a rapid time and when they have a really good puppy this puppy will actually support them in developing the skills that they need and it's going to be great for them if they can make a few mistakes and the dog's not really going to suffer all that much from it because you know the lower drive the dog doesn't leave you a whole lot of margin to mess up because then they're going to be completely fed up so i kind of disagreed with that but you know that mindset does exist you know with almost everyone every everyone that breeds would you give the top you know high drive dog to somebody inexperienced your first gut feeling is no of course not but then again well you know you have to assess you know the the handler or the trainer that wants to get that puppy also like you know what kind of engagement are they going to put in what kind of time like what can they already show like just you know moving wise and stuff like that so how do you how do you see you kind of talk to my belief you got to give him at least a chance to to understand what it would be and you know from that conversation i would rather than have that puppy go to somebody completely

초보자라도 좋은 가이드라인이나 프로그램을 가진 사람에게 가는 게, 모든 걸 안다고 생각해서 다룰 수 있다고 믿지만 결국 망쳐버릴 경험자에게 가는 것보다 낫다고 봅니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 과거에 항상 그래왔으니까요. 경험이 있긴 하지만 제가 무슨 말을 하는지 아시겠죠? 네, 맞아요. 하이 드라이브 견은 심지어 초보 트레이너나 핸들러, 혹은 견주, 그 누구의 손에 있더라도 말이죠. 제 말은 그들은 훨씬 더 쉽게 회복할 수 있다는 거예요. 그러니까 만약 훈련 중에 실수를 하거나 처음 훈련하는 사람이라서 고전하고 있더라도, 음 제 의견으로는 하이 드라이브 견이 훨씬 더 빨리 회복할 수 있다고 봅니다. 네, 그건 사실이에요. 로우 드라이브 견보다 그 견종으로 더 많은 실수를 해도 괜찮아요. 제 생각엔 문제는 사람들이 개를 사는 데 투자를 한다는 거죠. 요즘 개를 사는 게 더 이상 싸지 않거든요. 예전에는 말리노이즈는 가난한 사람들을 위한 개였죠. 어쩌면 모르실 수도 있겠지만, 여기 이 나라에서는요. 그 개들이 사육되던 곳에서는 가난한 사람들의 개였어요. 왜냐하면 개가 워낙 튼튼해서 절대 아픈 적이 없었거든요. 농사일을 돕거나 물건을 나르는 등 여러 일을 하는 데 쓰였으니까요. 식탁에서 나온 빵 부스러기 정도만 먹이고, 따로 사료를 챙겨줄 필요가 없었죠. 남은 음식을 먹고 자랐고 절대 아프지 않아서 수의사한테 갈 일도 없었으니, 정말 가난한 사람들의 개였던 셈이죠. 요즘 말리노이즈는 꽤 비쌀 수 있어요. 최상위 혈통이나 최고의 사육사, 우선 분양권, 챔피언급 같은 것들을 따지다 보면, 사람들이 강아지를 큰돈 주고 분양받아 오지만 정작 그 뒤로 어떻게 시작해야 할지는 전혀 모르는 경우가 많아요. 그러다 보니 유튜브 같은 걸 찾아보기 시작하는 거죠. 거기서부터 잘못되는 거예요. 저도 유튜브를 정말 좋아하고 많은 정보를 얻으려 보지만, 솔직히 말씀드리면 개 훈련 때문에 유튜브를 보지는 않아요. 너무 많은 정보가 섞여 있거든요. 사실 어제도 알고리즘에 뜬 영상 하나를 봤는데, 제 피드에 가끔 개 훈련 영상이 올라오거든요. 어쩔 수 없이 호기심에 클릭하게 되는데, 특히 조회수가 높고 평이 좋은 사람 영상이면 더 그렇더라고요. 그런데 첫째로, 그 사람은 강아지 훈련에 대해 이렇게 말하더군요. 강아지가 당신의 눈을 똑바로 쳐다봐야 한다며 가르치는데, 그건 워킹 독이었거든요. 순수 워킹 독 말이에요. 저는 생각했죠. 물론 다 말이 되는 소리 같겠죠.
new with a good a guideline or with a program then go into somebody experienced that's supposed to know everything and they think they can handle it and then they're going to mess it up because that's what they've always done in the past as well but they do have the experience you can see where i'm going so yeah yeah it's yeah you know a higher higher drive dog can you know even even in the hands of a novice trainer or handler you know owner whatever whoever gets this dog i mean they're they're more more they can just recover easier right so like so like it's like if you mess up with your training or you're you know you're struggling because you're a first time trainer or a handler or owner um the higher drive dog is i in my opinion going to be able to recover a lot quicker yeah yeah that's a fact more mistakes with that dog than you can with one of the lower drive dogs in my opinion i think the problem is also that people they invest in doctors buying a dog these days is not that cheap anymore back in the day the mall was for the poor people uh maybe you don't know but here in this country where they were bred it was a poor man's dog because the dog was so strong it never got sick you know it was used to you know to farm to help you farm and you know pull stuff and all that kind of stuff so and only got you know some bread off the table you didn't have to feed it anything besides what the leftovers were and you never had to go to the vet because it never got six it was really a poor man's dog right these days these days a malinois can be pretty expensive right you go into the top lines the top readers the first picks the you know the champions all that kind of stuff and and then they buy this little puppy make all these investments but then they don't actually know where to start from then on so that's when it starts and then they start looking for youtube and all that kind of stuff and that's where it goes downhill because i truly believe and i i'm a big youtube fan like i go to youtube for a lot of things but i don't go to youtube for doctoring to be honest because there's so much and actually yesterday i was just looking at a clip because it does show up in my feed sometimes of you know stuff with a doctor and then sometimes i can't help myself clicking it if it's somebody that has you know a lot of coverage reviews and then first of all like this person was talking about oh the dog i'll show you how to the puppy needs to look you in the eye and stuff like that was a working dog right it's a pure working dog and i'm thinking of course it all makes sense right all this

and and just be a part of it and so that volunteering turned into me cleaning kennels right i'm just out there scooping shit and off and forth cleaning just so i could be in their space wow um and doesn't that maligator mom sorry can i call you that i think that's okay it doesn't matter doesn't that contribute to the elite mindset oh you got to clean some kennels to be part of this you're going right you mentioned it but then you're helping it you know keep a yeah i think it was just it was my way of trying to to give something back for being allowed to just come out there and spend hours out there being in everybody's way you know it's like at least i can come out here and offer something and be productive and also you know kind of break into this club you know like do my put in my work and break into the club yeah and and that kind of it's so it slowly progressed right from that to like oh uh okay can you grab zia out of the kennel can you grab diesel out of the kennel can you go get so and so and that turned into me getting to be a little bit more hands-on right and so slowly that progressed but in that time the men that were working in that same space um you know i would i would experience things like if i was asked to go get a dog um and i'd go in and i'd be putting the collar on the dog i've literally have men come in and move me out of the way here i let me get her i can get her i'll i'll help her and i'm like i don't need your help to take this dog out of the kennel you know but but there's but there was just like this attitude of you know you you can't do this like you you can't do this like why why are you even here you're not capable of this um and that was prevalent not only in person but also online you know like it was everywhere it was like you just have no business online can you give us an example online on what they were saying that you know yeah yeah um you know a lot of people thought that because i was a mother with some younger children like my youngest daughter i think was like four or so when i got into this um it was like you you as a mother you're being a bad mother by having these types of dogs around your children it's dangerous it's wrong you shouldn't be doing it that was the biggest thing was because i had young kids people mostly men were telling me you shouldn't have these dogs because you have children you can't be a good mom and have these dogs around your kids um that was the biggest pushback and then um you know you also open yourself up to just a bunch of entitling comments i think from a lot of men who see you on social media and feel

stupid the word stupid no i mean really i'm like what is going on um and so a lot of posts will get taken down i'm really not sure but what i know is is that not having the control over your own group like that to allow that community to really truly evolve organically hinders the community from growing um which is why i left i mean i didn't leave it but i've kind of been ignoring the facebook group and i started the discord group because discord is a private server and so you don't have to worry about the facebook police coming in and moderating anything okay we're going to talk about your event because you got something big to announce in a second so but anyways i just wanted to chime in here when lisa and miller is saying oh my god the belgium malinois group is that your group by the way it's pet owners versus working dog owners is that your group referring to really that's how i think i think that that's very very true i think that's a great description of what's going on especially online you know you see a lot of people who have malinois more as pets and don't understand them as the working breed that they are and so those two communities clash all right so and when you say clash are we talking about methodology then like the more positive approach versus the e-collar users of the working dogs and stuff like that are we talking that kind of yeah i think so i think so i think a lot of the pet owners um you know i'll get comments about they don't like the fact that i create my dogs oh it's so cool to create your dog that's so mean um or you use an e-collar and that's you know that's abusive or a prong collar that's abusive um and that's that's kind of the the pet dog mentality versus the working dog mentality where we see these things as beneficial tools it's part of good structure it's part of training it's part you know um and they can't they cannot seem to find common ground um well i think you know and i addressed that with larry also in one of the previous podcasts larry cron uh wrote a book about e-collars so shout out to larry but um what happens is because we just talked about youtube youtube has a lot of huge channels also on dog training right those are not the typical working dog channels we're talking about channels about just training dogs pet dogs right they have the most influence in the entire world if you would sum up all the big names all the big trainers from caesar milan to i don't know a whole lot of them but anyways let's say you have all these channels lined up and they would form the backbone of

only class look i've been spending over a decade over a decade finding people or finding at least somebody that could do it with a high drive dog and i'm talking like the hundred the 100 ones yeah yeah and do competition and get you know the clean outs the recalls like everything on point as clean as it comes it took me over a decade just to find one person like that and also a person who can think outside the box of what they were doing with this dog because most of the time when you do find somebody that is very skilled and has very it's very knowledgeable in this area they only attach it to their craft and their sport which could be for example akc obedience or whatever it is and they got their results and and that's what it is but somebody that can transcend over multiple sports you know basically a freestyler who could do it all with a high drive dog it took me over a decade to find somebody like that and i thought when i saw this person i invited her here many many times between together that was something special that i saw i said this this deserves a platform and that person never would have gotten the platform to showcase what she could do if it wasn't for me discovering her because it just doesn't happen if you would see somebody tomorrow at a club i mean you can you can't just say i'm going to pick this person up and make a whole class around this person if you're not into making classes so you know i just wanted to give something back for all the people myself included that always believe this is impossible without a tool it is possible but yeah you do have to see things from a whole different perspective on skills as well like it's not just what i'm making a conscious conscious choice about using or not using no this is about hey when you choose not to your vision on how you're going to approach things is very different and when you time and you prioritize certain exercises into the repertoire of this dog is very different so the plan of creating that making that happen requires a lot of cognitive skills also it's not just the real we're not going to use any tools or yeah i'm going to use tools it doesn't work like that it's she she is very very smart and intelligent a very smart person and you know so people see it more black and white but that's not what it is because if that's how she was for example she wouldn't come here with somebody who does use all these tools so but she sees it for what it is and she's like hey i'm i'm like if you're vegan for example that doesn't mean you hate people that eat meat you just make a conscious choice hey i

don't want to eat meat so but if you do hey i still respect you no problem yeah you can still be my best friend that's how it should be yes but these days hey you're against it or you're for or you're against it and that just causes all this turmoil that i i just it just makes me sick reading all that but that said i was the same because i never thought somebody could really do it until i had to see it with my own eyes and i was and i was very very i mean uh uh like i wanted to make sure that it was just as clean as i i wanted it to be and that's not like kind of looking like it is with tools but i wanted to see the exact same results it is possible it's just a whole different approach that's why you make this call because you can't just go in there you know not thinking not have a perfect plan to execute that kind of training so uh positive only yeah it does look it always intrigued me because i'm not a heavy tool user regardless of what people think there are some results that i wouldn't have today if it wasn't for the tool but i'm not a heavy tool user especially so you know i i like it because it does give you a lot of options but uh i think what positive only does is it makes you think about the craft a lot and not so much about the tools i never look at my backyard if you ever come to people that i've been here it's almost empty so there's almost no props here you know i like to work with nothing and and that kind of goes into that same category you work with nothing just the basic stuff right the food or something that the dog is interested in like a ball and stuff like that and that's where you got to make it happen so that means all the skill is on you right you've got to make anything happen how do you make sure this dog is still going to have an out how do you make sure this dog is not going going into overdrive when we're talking about the high drive once right yeah they make you mediocre once you could get a and he snaps out of his drive i've had a puppy like that so he wanted to go grab a sleeve he didn't know anything his instincts are grabbed the sleeve and i was like not yet hey he's like okay then i won't right a real a real malin wow you wouldn't care less of what do you say hey or that he's just gonna pick that up and and try to destroy it or run away with it so yeah here i'm going there's many levels to dogs what they are and then you know what they will respond to and the high drive ones the super ones that's going to be a really tough job handling those with a positive only

program yes so and i think and i could see that the the tool user will say it's impossible just like myself as the other people that have not used to say hey i get the results but the results are not on that level you've not competed you know as you want to go to law enforcement i do have to say that puts me on the fence a lot because law enforcement you're doing riot training where you do you know all do all this kind of stuff and you have to also protect people from uh you know getting injured i mean whatever it takes in in my opinion so that would be a long run also and you would expect too much from the canine handles also to make sure that they have all that kind of skill also and those kind of cognitive insights on what to do and the process does take longer i gotta tell you guys so that was one of the first things that i saw was like this process takes longer i'm going to give you an example yeah uh for example people if you have a high drive malinois would you like to do bike work yeah yeah of course because if you want to do protection work for example that's your goal you want to go in there and do it if you're pursuing positive only for example you can't just go in there and start doing this stuff you gotta have some level of control before you get into the serious bike work i mean as a you can give it a sleeve and so but once you've seen what it is and you recognize the talent and you recognize there's the ability to do it you got to go back into to the drawing board and make sure that when you come back you have some kind of control some kind of high level control already you see where it starts going wrong the traditional ways of course we're going to go in with talented puppies and have them do the bite work and then you know go with the leashes and this that's right just wrap your head around it going with a high drive dog to competition who's never had a leash on its neck in his life a high drive dog how comfortable would you feel she goes into downtown with a dog like packed with people and dogs and cars and buses she's not really impressive it is impressive like hey whatever you you got to stay here i'm making a class and then this class people got to see what you do that's just you know it's something extraordinary i like it a lot and i learn a lot myself too you know it doesn't matter do you feel like it's a lot of do you feel like it's it's that she is very gifted and talented do you feel like it's achievable for the average handler to approach it this way or do you feel

like she really has like a gift and a talent that most people might not be able to tap into very fair question but i feel exactly the same about the tool users so you can't say hey cognitive only oh that's way harder you know you got to be really skilled i feel if you use tools that doesn't mean you need less skills i'm going to give you an example the multitasking with tools the leash the clicker the collar using the foot on top of that hey that's where i see a lot of people fold and struggle and not make it right because that's when it gets really really hard so i wouldn't say it's easier or harder it is different it's like it's being a vegan hard i think try it you know right to me it was hard but once you're in it you're like hey yeah i can do this right so it's just a mind if you're like i don't want to touch your leash all right for whatever reason whatever your goal or maybe the government doesn't allow you doesn't allow any tools any prongs any and because i i personally really believe if you can't use a prong on a knee collar you shouldn't be using chokes instead because that's not really going to do you know the best thing for you so if i would have to make that choice because the government kind of makes you put you in that position i would take it serious and i would wrap my head around okay what will it take now what will it take that i need to change on my vision and my priorities in the training development to make sure that i won't be depending on these tools but because i can and because i've already developed myself a lot in using tools for me it's really hard to then just abandon everything because using tools is also a craft that takes time yeah it's not just something like hey got this the push of the button is the easy part right that's just what everybody can do what goes before it what goes you know during it what happens what your analysis uh means to you how you see things what too much too low all that kind of stuff it requires a lot also so i wouldn't say easier but it's hard to abandon a craft once you've already mastered that one and then go into a completely different one i mean that kind of uh thinking is is i mean that kind of change is really hard for people and that's why we also see the traditional methods you know always staying what they are because it's hard for people to go away from something that they've achieved success with it's no different for me even i'm not like a traditional trainer it is hard for me also to go only positive so what i like to do is i like to use a lot of the smart techniques that are in there a lot of good

or or trying to to share um more valuable content in that sense or the things you want to do and that's whether you like it or not that's just the nature of the game that's just what social media is so building um you know posting things that are either funny um strike emotion or are inspiring i think those are the three um types of you know pieces of content that you need to be focusing on building stories or content or posts around that and to do that in our niche of training and dogs and working dogs is no easy task it's hard to create content that inspires or checks off one of those three boxes around dog training so it's it's not easy but um but it is possible and i think that we have to to just get over the idea that our good training content is going to bring people our way because it's just not there's tons of nominal trainers let's face it no social media presence i mean it's you got to make the video but you have to edit the video you got to make some captions you got to make the create the story around it so can you imagine that a lot of people are just good doctors they're not good at editing or making videos or you know coming up with these ideas but they try to run a business any tips for them it's hard i mean honestly i would say hire someone yeah hire someone to do it you'd be surprised how many uh young folks out there are trying to get into this type of field and in marketing and social media and that kind of thing who are hungry for this kind of work they would love to get your login you know to instagram and take over your account for you and work on creating that kind of stuff so i would say hire someone to come in and do something like that if you really want to grow your social media account you don't have that time or maybe you just don't have you're not like a super creative person um you know have somebody else come in and do it it's it's always okay to to put the right people in place you know if you're not good at something that's okay i'm not good at a lot of things either but what i'm not good at i will go find someone who is good at that thing and bring them in to be on on the table that makes a lot of sense makes a lot of sense so uh there are people already struggling maybe it wasn't completely clear so let's just get that out of the way um somebody here was saying uh here do you need discord do you have to join that group uh she said she can't register yet so yeah registration is not yet open okay yeah my bad because i said register at working doc uh discord.com i already said register
