this is milsa bro and you're listening to the fenzy dog sports podcast brought to you by the fenzy dog sports academy an online school dedicated to providing high quality instruction for competitive dog sports using only the most current and progressive training methods today we'll be talking to sarah bruski about competing in up dog and all the different games you and your dog can play with a frisbee hi sarah welcome back to the podcast hi melissa thank you so much for having me excited to chat about this it's definitely a favorite topic so um to start us out do you want to just remind everybody a little bit about kind of who you are who your dogs are and what you're working on with them sure i have a lot of dogs um and i've been competing in up dog since its creation so 10 years ago they had one of their first beta tests off site um up here in minnesota and i was at that and then my dogs and i competed at the very first up diff so that's the up dog international finals and we came away with a lot of awards including overall champion versatility champion when they were still doing that across all height divisions and all of the games uh that was zip tie that did that and then um same thing for the next up diff they weren't doing the versatility champion anymore but we did place high in a lot of the games and um championed a lot of those games as well so um i've been competing ever since my current competition dogs so i have a whole bunch of retired old dogs that were my frisbee performing dogs that i used to do halftime shows and work for parina for um and we just perform every single day and then now my current competition dogs i have two australian coolies i have a two-year-old named cake a four-year-old named vibrant and then i have a little papillon who is my tiny dog named pop rock and she is two years old i don't understand how cake and pop rock can both be two already that's not i know and also at the same time like you guys you are two years old you are dope dogs now so let's talk disc uh can you talk just a little bit about kind of what it means to compete with your dog in frisbee what venues there are and kind of what is up dog maybe why you like it in particular not much what is up with you nice so the first thing i kind of want to mention about disc in general is that it is super welcoming to newcomers so if there is if you haven't been involved with a sport already and your dog loves to play frisbee in backyard is just find a local club and start competing because it's really geared

towards getting people more involved with their dogs and kind of welcoming newbies into the fold as as you know as we say it so with up dog in particular that is the whole reason behind it the founders created it as a means to get more people involved with their dogs outside of just sitting on the couch with them get them more involved get them more active we know that active dogs are healthier dogs and people doing things with their dogs are making healthier people as well and so that was kind of the whole foundation behind up dog from the creators um and so for that reason it is one of the most welcoming venues they can include things like rollers so if you're like i can't throw a frisbee that well or that far a roller is where you just roll the disc along the ground and that counts as a throw in up dog now as far as disc in general disc dog not all of the organizations allow things like rollers some of them do you have to look at the rules and kind of guidelines as far as that goes most of them are more traditional based meaning there are two different games so you have toss and fetch which is throw the disc as far as you can you get points for distance and accuracy and then there's freestyle and that's the creative routines that we do with the tricks where dogs are like jumping off of our body to catch the frisbee and that's set to music so those are the two foundation games the traditional games for disc dog and then up dog has kind of got taken those and ran with them and made a whole bunch of really fun strategy games that cater to all the different skill sets for dogs and their handlers i think um you know when the uninitiated kind of hear that people compete in frisbee with their dog you know throw and go is kind of what they're picturing right throwing the disc having the dog retrieve it um first of all is it that simple right what else is involved and can you paint a little bit of a picture of some of those different games sure so throw and go is just like the toss and fetch that i was talking about earlier it's designed to be a more traditional game however strategy games when i talk about strategy games it turns out that there are some strategies to that game in particular that up dog game throw and go that make it one a little bit more beginner friendly and two allows you to get a lot more points than just thrown as far as you can so that's one of the games that i talk about in week two in my new disc dog class what is up dog because um people don't realize that the high points in that game are

사실 10야드 지점인 첫 번째 라인으로 계속해서 던져 보내는 것이라는 사실을 잘 모르기 때문이죠. 그러니 그 게임에서 좋은 점수를 얻기 위해 꼭 45야드씩 괴물처럼 멀리 던질 필요는 없습니다. 만약 점수 체계를 확인하고 우수한 팀들이 어떻게 점수를 내는지 지켜본다면, 그 게임의 레벨 1에서는 장거리 던지기로 점수를 얻는 게 아니라는 걸 알게 될 겁니다. 레벨 2로 넘어가면 전략이 조금 달라지긴 하지만요. 어쨌든 레벨 1에서는 성공을 위해 45야드를 던질 필요는 전혀 없습니다. 그 게임에서 팀이 프리스비를 시작하려고 할 때 어떤 기술들을 기초 기술이라고 생각하시나요? 나중에 대회에 나갈 생각이라면, 업독(UpDog)의 모든 게임을 단 하나의 원반만으로도 할 수 있습니다. 개가 원반을 다시 물어오게만 가르쳤다면, 그런 식으로 프리스비를 배워도 충분히 대회에 참가하고 성공할 수 있어요. 프리스타일 외의 종목들은 모두 그런 방식으로 게임을 진행할 수 있죠. 하지만 만약에 더 많은 점수를 얻고 싶거나 조금 더 잘하고 싶고, 경쟁력을 높이고 싶다면 개에게 여러 개의 원반으로 노는 방법을 가르쳐야 합니다. 일부 게임은 한 번에 최대 8개의 원반까지 사용할 수 있어서, 각 게임의 전략에 맞게 활용할 수 있기 때문이죠. 그래서 다음 원반을 던질 수 있도록 개가 멀리서 원반을 놓게 가르치거나, 개에게 고 어라운드(go around)를 가르치는 것인데, 이는 개가 몸을 돌려 가속도를 붙여서 더 멀리 날아가는 원반을 잡게 하는 기술입니다. 또 다른 기술로는 핸드 리트리브(retrieve to hand)가 있죠. 원반을 가지고 제게 가져오게 하거나 발 앞에 떨어뜨리게 하는 것인데, 이 세 가지가 제가 생각하기에 디스크를 처음 시작하는 분들에게 정말 유용한 기초 기술입니다. 하지만 말씀드렸다시피 그냥 원반을 던지기만 하는 게임이라면 업독에서도 충분히 성공할 수 있습니다. 좋네요. 그럼 업독 게임을 위한 전략을 세운다는 것이 무엇인지 좀 더 깊이 들어가 볼까요? 게임 하나를 예로 들어주시고, 거기에 적용할 수 있는 전략 한두 가지를 설명해주실 수 있나요? 네, 그럼 이미 말씀드린 쓰로우 앤 고(throw and go)와 짧은 던지기를 활용한 두 가지 게임에 대해 얘기해 볼게요. 제 개 중 하나인 집 타이가 2년 전에 세계 기록을 경신하려고 했을 때인데, 저는 그 기록을 위해 고군분투했거든요. 안타깝게도 지금은 그 아이가 너무 늙어서 할 수 없지만, 당시 세계 기록을 얻기 위해서는 1분 안에 10야드 지점에서 10야드 던지기를 7번 성공시켜야 했습니다. 그래서 7번의 성공, 그리고 제 기억에는 1점짜리 던지기를 한 번 하고 나서... 시간이 끝나갈 무렵 45야드 롤러를 엔드 존으로 던져 12점을 추가로 획득하세요. 전략을 살펴볼 때 가장 빠르게 점수를 얻는 방법이 무엇인지 고려해 보는 겁니다.
actually scored by throwing a 10 yard throw so to the first line and back over and over and over again so you don't have to throw these monster 45 yard throws to score well in that game and if you look at the points and watch you know how these big teams are are scoring um it's not from throwing long distance in that game at the level one now level two with up dog it does change the game a little bit in the strategy a little bit but level one you don't need to throw a 45 yard throw to be successful in that game what skills do you consider foundation skills if a team is starting to play the frisbee and they intend eventually to compete you can play all of the games at up dog with just one disc and having your dog bring it back to you so if that's how you taught frisbee you can compete and be successful with those outside of freestyle um so all of the games can be played that way however if you want more points and you want to play a little bit better and be a little bit more competitive you do want to teach your dogs how to play with multiple frisbees so you know some of the games allow for up to eight discs at a time and that really caters to the strategy for each individual game and so teaching your dog to drop at a distance so you can throw another one teaching your dog to do a go around which is where they go around their bodies so they can accelerate to catch those longer throws that's another skill and then a retrieve to hand so to have the disc and bring it to me or drop it at my feet so those are kind of the three foundation skills that i think are really helpful for anybody getting started with disc but like i said if you have a game where you just throw the disc you can still be successful in up dog i like that uh so let's dive a little deeper into what it means to actually have a strategy for up dog games can you talk us through a game and maybe one or two of the strategies that might apply to it yeah so i'll talk about two ones since i already mentioned throw and go and doing those short throws so um one of my dogs zip tie was i was battling to try to take the world record spot for him two years ago now he's he's unfortunately too old and so for him to get that world record spot two years ago it was to get seven 10 yard throws so just on the 10 yard line within that minute time um so seven of those one little i think i did like a one point throw and then just as the time was ending throw a 45 yard roller to the end to get an additional 12 points so looking at you know with the strategies looking at what is the fastest way to get points

음, 그러니까 제가 10야드 던지기를 해서 6점을 7번 받는다면, 음 계산이 어떻게 되더라, 6 곱하기 7이 얼마인지 잘 모르겠네요. 6 곱하기 6은 36이고 더하기 7이니까요. 어쨌든 계산상으로 그 시간 내에 6점짜리 던지기를 7번 성공할 수 있다면, 12점짜리 던지기를 세 번이나 네 번 성공하는 것보다 훨씬 낫다는 거죠. 그리고 12점짜리 긴 던지기는 시간이 거의 다 됐을 때를 위해 아껴두는 겁니다. 업독(UpDog)은 항상 이런 스위트 스팟 보너스 점수 기회를 제공하니까요. 스로우 앤 고(Throw and Go)에서 소위 '액티브 스위트 스팟 보너스'라고 부르는 것은 시간이 끝나기 전에 원반을 던지는 겁니다. 즉 시간이 종료되기 전에 원반이 손에서 떠나야 하지만, 캐치는 시간 종료 후에 이루어져야 하며, 20야드 라인 너머 보너스 존에서 캐치해야 합니다. 그래서 어디로 던지느냐가 매우 중요하죠. 스위트 스팟 보너스로 5점을 추가로 받고 해당 던지기에 대한 점수도 받으니, 그 던지기 한 번으로 17점을 얻을 수 있는 겁니다. 그래서 각 게임에서 제공하는 추가 보너스 점수를 최대한 활용하면서도, 가능한 한 효율적으로 던져서 최대한 많은 횟수를 기록하는 전략을 세울 수 있습니다. 이건 한 가지 게임일 뿐이고, 또 다른 인기 게임인 '포 웨이 플레이(Four-way Play)'를 위한 전략도 있습니다. 그 게임에서는 네 개의 사분면 각각에서 캐치를 성공한 뒤 다시 사분면을 반복해야 합니다. 구역마다 정해진 점수가 있는데, 우리가 알아낸 바로는 최상위 팀들은 그 작은 사분면으로 긴 거리를 던지지 않습니다. 그 사분면들은 겨우 5야드 곱하기 10야드 크기거든요. 그래서 한쪽에서 20야드 거리로 던지게 되면 반대편 끝까지 닿기는 많은 개에게 정말 어렵습니다. 특히 멀리 뛰는 개라면 그 지점을 그냥 훌쩍 넘어버릴 테니까요. 그래서 핸들러인 본인이 경기 구역의 각 코너로 달려가서 짧고 낮게 토스만 해줘도 캐치로 인정받습니다. 그렇게 하면 캐치를 놓칠 확률이 줄어듭니다. 던지는 게 아니니까요. 혹은 개가 구역 안에 있어서 구역 밖에서 캐치할 일도 없죠. 바로 그 자리에 던져주니까요. 이제 점수는 제가 핸들러로서 얼마나 빠른지에만 달려 있습니다. 개가 엉뚱한 곳에 떨어뜨린 것을 주우러 다닐 필요도 없고, 실수할 가능성을 모두 제거해주니까 가능한 한 많은 점수를 얻을 확률이 높아집니다. 가장 멋있거나 매력적인 방식은 아니겠지만, 가장 효율적인 방식이며, 세계 기록과 높은 점수는 바로 여기서 나옵니다. 그리고 캐치에
um so if i do that 10 that 10 yard throw that is worth six points times seven what's quick math i don't know six times seven i know six times six 36 plus seven i hope it's somewhere in there anyway the math works out where if i can get seven of those six point throws um in that time frame it's much better than getting you know my three 12 point throws or fourth 12 point throws or however it might be and then saving that big long throw that 12 point throw for just as time is being called because up dog always creates these sweet spot bonus point opportunities and then throw and go the one that they call the active sweet spot bonus is you throw the disc before time ends so the disc has already left your hand before time ends the t in time but the disc is caught after time ends and it has to be after the 20 yard line in the bonus zone so it's very particular about where it's thrown um you get that additional five points for the sweet spot bonus and the points for that throw so that one throw is worth 17 points so i can come up with a strategy where i can really maximize those additional bonus points that each game offers as well as capitalize how many throws i can possibly get off by making it as efficient as they possibly can so that's just one game there's another strategy for one of the more popular games called four-way play and in that game they have to get a catch in each of the four quadrants before repeating the quadrants again and so they're worth a certain amount of points but we found and the top teams they're not throwing long throws to those tiny little quadrants those quadrants are only five yards by ten yards so if you're throwing a 20 yard throw from one end to the other it's really hard to hit that quadrant for a lot of dogs especially if you have like a big leaping dog they're going to leap right over that spot um so if you run yourself as the handler to each corner of the game and just do this short little deep toss that counts as a catch and so that reduces my chance for missed catches because i'm not throwing it or catches out of the zone because my dog is in the zone i put them right there um and then now the points are just dependent on how fast i am as a handler i don't have to run around and collect this that my dog's dropped where they're not supposed to and and it just gets rid of all of those chances of error and increases the probability you're going to get as many points as possible and so while it's not the most you know uh the most sexy version of the game right it is the most efficient and that's where your world records are coming from and your

어려움을 겪는 개들에게도 정말 좋습니다. 왜냐하면 미리 점프하는 경향이 있는 개들, 케이크가 딱 그런데요, 그런 개들에게는 말이죠. 그래서 케이크는 지난 대회에서 이 방식으로 쿼드 네 개를 쉽게 쓸어담았습니다. 디스크를 놓치지도 않았고, 너무 일찍 점프하지도 않았으며 구역 밖으로 뛰지도 않았으니까요. 제가 던지는 순간 바로 캐치했고, 그래서 그게 케이크가 성공하는 데 엄청난 전략적 도움이 되었습니다. 개에 따라 전략을 맞춤화하시나요? 어떤 요소들이 특정 전략을 선택하게 만드나요? 네, 전적으로 개에게 달려 있습니다. 그래서 경쟁적인 선수로서 저는 제 개들을 가장 경쟁력 있는 전략으로 이끌려고 노력합니다. 왜냐하면 순위에 들고 싶고, 이기고 싶고, 세계 기록을 세우고 싶기 때문이죠. 그게 제 목표니까요. 하지만 그게 이 게임들의 묘미는 반려견과 함께 성공할 수 있는 다양한 전략을 구사할 수 있도록 설계되었다는 점입니다. 또한 개인 최고 기록을 달성할 수 있기 때문에 필드에 나가서 대회에서 입상하지 못하더라도 자격 요건을 갖추기 위한 점수를 계속 쌓을 수 있고 타이틀 획득을 위해 노력할 수 있습니다. 만약 그 게임에서 반려견과 함께 최고의 라운드를 펼친다면 개인 최고 기록을 달성하게 되며 많은 대회에서 이를 위한 특별상을 수여하기도 합니다. 그래서 굳이 경쟁을 원하지 않더라도 반려견이 성공할 수 있도록 전략을 세우는 것은 정말 좋은 방법입니다. 저도 5파운드짜리 파피용을 다룰 때와 36파운드의 빠르고 잘 달리는 콜리에게 하는 방식은 확실히 다릅니다. 제가 그 아이와 플레이하는 전략은 더 크고 빠른 개들과 플레이할 때와는 매우 다를 것입니다. 그 부분에 대해 조금 더 자세히 설명해 주실 수 있나요? 팝락과 할 때와 케이크 같은 개들과 할 때의 차이점이 무엇인가요? 네, 아까 말씀드린 포 웨이 플레이(four-way play) 게임에서 팝락의 경우 저는 롤러를 던져줍니다. 왜냐하면 녀석은 짧게 던져주는 것들에는 성공하지 못하거든요. 공중에서 원반을 잡는 건 녀석에게 정말 어려운 일이지만, 롤러만큼은 정말 기가 막히게 잘 잡아냅니다. 그래서 팝락과는 Z자 형태로 게임을 진행하는 편입니다. 한쪽 모서리에서 반대편 모서리로 직선으로 던진 다음, 대각선으로 가고 다시 다른 모서리로 직선으로 던지는 식이죠. 그렇게 하면 녀석이 최대한 롤러를 향해 직선으로 달릴 수 있게 되고, 저는 롤러를 존 안에 최대한 쉽게 넣어주기만 하면 됩니다. 녀석은 몸집이 작아서
high score to come from and it's really great when you have dogs that are struggling catching because they pre-jump like cake cake does that and so for her she's you know she cleared out four quads at our last competition easily with this method because she wasn't missing discs she wasn't jumping too early she wasn't jumping out of the zones um she was getting those just as i threw them and so that was a huge huge help for a strategy for her to be successful what factors like do you tailor those strategies based on the dog and what factors kind of about the dog you know might make you choose like one strategy versus another yeah it totally is dependent on the dog and so while i as a competitive player i'm going to try to push my dogs to these most competitive strategies as i possibly can because i want to place i want to win i want to set world records that's what i want to do um but that's the beauty of it these games are designed in a way that there are many different strategies you can play to be successful with your dog and there's personal best you can earn so you can go on the field and even if you don't place at that competition you're still earning points towards qualifications and towards your titles and and if you do the best round you've ever done in that game with your dog then you get a personal best and a lot of the competitions have special awards for that and so even though you don't want to be competitive um setting up the strategies for your dog to be successful is a is a great option and so i definitely don't play my little five pound papillon the same way i play my big you know 36 pound fast running cooley and so the strategies that i'm going to play with her are going to be very different than i do with my my bigger faster dogs can you go into that just a little bit more like what some of the differences are between what you do with pop rock and what you do with somebody like cake yeah so for pop rock in that four-way play game that i mentioned earlier i do throw rollers because um she is not successful with those little short tosses um catching a disc out of the air is a real struggle for her but she can grab rollers like none you know like like crazy and so for her i tend to play that game in more of a z shape so i go from one corner straight across to the other corner then we do a diagonal and then straight across the other corner that way she's running straight towards those rollers as much as possible and i just make sure that i'm putting those rollers in the zone as easily as i can and because she's tiny the chance

of her catching it out of the zone is a lot more slim than my big dog that can clear that zone in one and a half strides and so it's a lot less risky for me to throw a throw for her um and get it in that zone than my other dogs interesting um all right so uh for people who are listening to this and going well that kind of sounds like fun um what's the best way to learn about local clubs what's the best way to get involved how do you start doing this stuff so updogchallenge.com has a list of different events so you'll want to click on that look in your area see what events are coming up you can also just google search for disc dog clubs in your area and while they might not be offering up dog they might have play dates they might have different competitions and they might have just a good way to get involved which would probably be your first step um but yeah just go to a competition there are a ton of updog events nowadays and just watch um and and just ask questions you know if you can volunteer that's even better there's a lot of opportunities to volunteer where you don't have to know the rules or anything like that but it gives you that opportunity to be nice and close to the field and see what's going on and ask the judge questions awesome so we're talking about this because you have a new class you mentioned the new class a little bit earlier uh do you want to share just a bit more kind of about what you're covering in the class and maybe who should consider signing up yeah it's the updog what's updog it's a strategy class so how to kind of get the most out of your updog rounds and we're going through two different games uh each week so for the 11 games including the crossover so agility and frisbee crossover games and we're just kind of breaking them down going over the rules general rules and then what strategies are the best for you and your dog and the gold spots they i'll be catering the strategies to them and so if you really want that kind of more hands-on that might be a good option i think there might be one or two gold spots left in that class but bronze is still great there's a lot of really good students in there a big variety of students and i will be sharing videos of cake vibrant and pop rock for all of the games and how i'm playing it with them and so that way you can kind of see how i adapt for each dog and i talk really in depth about what i'm doing um as far as each strategy goes that sounds fantastic i may have to go sign up at bronze i hadn't done that yet um so uh that's not the only
