Alright, the purpose of this video is to show you how to teach a dog that's little to put their feet up so you can get their leash on. Okay, so the first thing I want to teach, my hand is flat, is to push up into me. The easiest way to do this really is a chin rest. There's your chin rest. Good boy. I should have had my cookies all ready, but he's patient, so he understands that. I'm going to push him. If I move my hand forward, he should move forward with me. Then I'm going to bring my hand out in front of him and wait for him to do it on his own. And now, a little higher. Good. Okay, good boy. Down. Stay. The hand over his nose, that's how I cue him that I want him to stay casually. He doesn't have to pay attention to me now. We're going to do it again, but this time I'm going to pull his collar. I'm doing it on purpose because you pull the collar when you put a leash on. Okay. He doesn't have to do a thing. Now I'm going to combine those two moves. Hand forward. Good. Once the clip is on, he gets rewarded. Now, if you think about it, he hears the clip sound so that acts as the clicker. Can't even get it off. Now, I used a down stay with him in between exercises but the other option I have is just like this. I can just snuggle with him. He's pretty good about that. So, catch your back. You don't have to put your dog on a down stay if your dog will stay with you comfortably like this. But it's an easy answer.

If you want to be super quick and you just want to go right, okay, you want to go right back to work like that. You can. But a down stay allows a degree of crispness and I've been talking a lot about crispness. So, you know, make of it what you will. Do what works for you but it works pretty well for me. And then during the time when I was setting up the video camera, I actually had him on his own. He understood that. I told him, take a break, you're on your own time. And during that time, even when I was messing around with the camera, he'll come over and be cute but he knows that the work hasn't started yet. So, think about that. That was an example of crispness and for the heck of it, you got to see how you can put a leash on a small dog without bending over.
