빠른 귀환 속도를 유지하는 훈련은 개가 핸들러에게 돌아오는 과정 전체를 보상 체계로 활용하는 데서 시작한다. 많은 훈련사가 귀환의 마지막 단계인 앉기나 물건을 뱉는 순간만을 보상하지만, 이는 개가 속도를 줄이는 습관을 형성하게 만든다. 개가 목표물을 물고 돌아서는 즉시 클릭커나 음성 신호로 보상을 예고하여 귀환 속도를 높이는 것이 핵심이다. 만약 핸들러가 돌아오던 개가 속도를 늦추는 지점에서 보상을 제시한다면, 개는 느릿한 귀환 행동을 강화하게 된다. 반대로 핸들러는 개가 가장 빠르고 민첩하게 움직이는 순간에 즉각적인 보상을 제공하여 속도감을 보상해야 한다. 또한, 물건을 뱉게 하는 명령어인 '뱉어'를 지나치게 자주 사용하면 손의 접촉 자체가 신호로 인식되어 나중에는 불필요한 저항을 유발할 수 있다. 따라서 핸들러는 상황을 정밀하게 읽고, 개가 게이트로 미끄러지듯 빠르게 진입할 때만 보상을 강화함으로써 귀환의 효율성을 높여야 한다.
