A little while ago, I did a TikTok live with a group of people and I talked about people who want to do bite sports with a more force-free method. I'm always a little uncomfortable when I say force-free because that doesn't actually exist. But what I mean is their goal is to minimize or eliminate the use of tools and training. And unfortunately, that live took place within a very specific context. So let me set the stage for that and explain why I am redoing this video outside of that context because it's going to be much better and more useful here. The context came after several weeks of conversations, both publicly and privately, with people who were mostly on the experienced trainer side and they were coming from other dog sports who were saying that they just weren't able to make it work and they wanted to do force-free bite sports. And they just weren't feeling like clubs were welcoming them or they were running into these problems. And it kind of went on that direction for a while. And so I did a series of videos talking about like, how do you get along if you're going to be in an environment where you might be seeing things differently? And I talked a little bit about picking dogs and stuff like that. But anyway, so that context set who my audience was. But unfortunately, because without thinking about it, I saved that video and put it on my podcast without realizing now I'm pulling it out of that context. And I'm not talking about the fact that I'm addressing an audience that has already said they really want to do this force-free. And then that made it really look bad. And I feel terrible about that because that's never, never my goal to make anyone feel bad. I was responding to many of their points to me. So saying things like they went places and they saw training choices that really upset them. I have to address that if somebody is telling me that because it does happen. There is stuff that's happening in the world that is upsetting in the world of dog sports. And I recognize it. Doesn't mean it's the majority by any stretch of the imagination, but I do think it's real. And I think when we're talking about the instinct-based sports like hunting dogs or protection dogs, trainers have more freedom because the dogs really want to play our games. And that gives us freedom that's good. And it gives us freedom that's not so good because the dogs will take a lot more compulsion. What do I mean by compulsion? I just mean make the dog do it. I mean, how you define that is up to you, whether you take things away,

whether you add punishers, doesn't matter. It just means that at the end of the day, you're pretty committed to making it happen one way or the other. I also did not adequately explain that I believe the majority of clubs these days are what we call reward-based. So basically that means that there is definitely an intent to try to make the experience positive for the dog. But now what I really want to talk about is what was my point in the first place. And that is how I see drive building in a program where the person eventually wants to train in a positive fashion and they are really trying to avoid tools. And what I am saying and have been saying for a long time, bite sports or instinct sports, hunting, whatever, it's not the same training minus the corrections. That's just, if you think about it like that, I think you're going to fail with an awful lot of dogs. Some dogs will be able to do it in spite of that, but it's a different way of thinking from the ground up. So one example that I use a lot because I think it's really important is what is the, what we call conditioned emotional response, CER, of the dog towards the field where you're going to train, towards the decoy or helpers where you're going to be. How is the dog introduced to bite sports with a new person? And what concerns me is that if you want to train force-free, you have to be constantly thinking about the dichotomy between drives and control. So the dog's desire to go forward and your need for the dog to play the game and the dichotomy between the decoy's value to the dog and the handler's value to the dog. And every session I'm going to be thinking about how am I going to keep all of those things in balance? And if anything, I'm going to actually try to the best of my ability to err on the side of retaining more value to the dog than the decoy. And that might mean that for a number of sessions, there might be the dog looking back at me and such. And that does not concern me because I'm pretty sure that will work itself out. And there are things you can do later on to bring the dog in. So what does that mean? So I'm coming from what's now called an IGP background. That is where I've spent most of my protection sports training time. And so when I was working in that field, there were things you would see. So here's an example, puppy circles. That means four or five young puppies all in a circle while the decoy or helper goes around sort of agitating each one, may or may not give a bite, but it's a frustration-based method that is designed to get the dog excited about the sport,

pulling into the harness, barking. The problem with things like puppy circles is that the fact that the puppy barks doesn't mean the helper runs over and gives the dog a bite. So rather than training the dog, this is what I want you to do. It's teaching the dog to be aroused in the presence of bite sports that may or may not actually benefit the dog long-term. And I'm really concerned about frustration and bringing frustration in if your goal long-term is force-free training. Now I'm going to say again, if that's not your goal, you have many more degrees of freedom because if the dog is worked up in frustration and frustration is linked to arousal and arousal may or may not be linked to aggression, but really it often is. I don't want a dog who's frustrated because a dog who's frustrated is not in a good frame of mind to learn. I want the dog to learn at every step of the game. You do something and this result and that you're controlling the situation. Another example, which I've also seen fairly frequently in the IGP world with young puppies, the dog comes on the field, they do whatever they're going to do. And the way they leave the field is by agitating the dog and having the owner drag the dog away. So again, the dog's behavior, the puppy's behavior is not what is causing it to being dragged away or is not what is causing the decoy to agitate without giving the dog a bite. That's creating a CER, a conditioned emotional response that involves frustration because the dog's choices don't drive the decoy in a case like that. I did mention in the original podcast, and I'll say it again. Once the dogs are on the bite, that changes. Most decoys then go into working and training the dog on bite development and some other qualities. So the first thing I would say, if you really want to train a dog, raise a dog up force-free, it's incredibly important that the dog's behavior is driving the decoy's behavior in a way that minimizes frustration as much as you can possibly get away with because frustration is going to make it hard for the dog to hear you. And when you start building frustration and arousal, it gets harder and harder and harder to get the dog in a learning frame of mind where you can retain control. The next thing is about back tension. So the problem I have with starting dogs out with a lot of back tension, it's actually not straight up control. Like I don't really care that much if a puppy pulls me onto the field with back tension with a harness. My concern is that what happens next, if the dog spends several

minutes completely oblivious to the handler, the handler might as well be a post for all the value they're adding. All of the dog's energy and focus and reinforcement and fun is faced forward towards a decoy if the dog is confident and loving the game. I think that is teaching the dog that the value of the decoy is significantly greater than the value of the handler. That's great until you need the dog to do what is 90 odd percent of most routines and protection, which is really obedience, not biting. So you're putting the dog out of balance. I want the dog in balance. So an alternative might be you go out on the field, the handler uses a toy, gets the dog to start biting and then just turns the dog over to the decoy handing the toy over to the decoy. And now the decoy takes over from there. And after a couple of minutes, maybe the decoy hands the toy back to the owner who then continues to play and run around with the dog. Now, instead of the decoy spending the whole time training the dog and then the owner goes home, maybe not having any idea what actually just happened there for years, I would actually say that my first Schutzen 3 dog, I truly don't know how he got trained. I just did what I was told. I was not a fundamental part of that process. And while it works, it does mean that I can't make changes to adapt the program to things I care about, like minimizing compulsion. I just sort of did what I was told. So now the decoy might well be spending their time instead of five or 10 minutes just working the puppy, a few minutes working the puppy, but then a few minutes helping the owner understand how to play with the toy in a way that is reinforcing for the dog and develop some positive habits. That's the change. Rather than just thinking about training the dog, training the handler so they can go home and work. Another thing, what age should we be starting all of this? Well, in the old days. So the old days, I had my first IGP title, I don't know, I'm going to say 30 years ago. At that time, we did not start dogs until they were adults. So you might do that puppy circle thing I talked about. But actual training started when the dogs were older. And at least at my club, which was one of the biggest clubs in the US, if not the biggest club, that involved defense. So my puppy was 18 months old or so when I brought him out. He already had a lot of training because he was already competing in other sports. And they started with defense, actually. So they showed the dog aggression, and then they're doing a lot of switching

to prey. But he's 18 months old. He's grown up. He can handle that pressure. And he was fine with that aspect of the sport. So he was okay with it. I don't think very many people do that with a puppy. I don't know that for a fact, but I haven't heard people saying that. So what we do instead with puppies is a lot of prey-based work. But that again, that means a lot of arousal, a lot of prey, a lot of fun focused on the decoy. And the dog is learning to go out of balance. Fine if you're comfortable using compulsion later on, if it gets too high, but really problematic. If the out, see, I would suggest that the out should be part of the game from the beginning. And not just, I don't think of it as you show me control and then you get what you want. I actually think of it as drives and control are so integrated that you can't pull them apart. So let me give you an example. Yesterday, I was sitting outside with my puppy. I was not training him at that minute. I was just sitting on the ground, resting, thinking about some stuff. And he had a toy that he was holding at a distance. And then he had the toy. Ownership is very important to this dog. He put the toy down. He came over to me and he leaned on my side while looking at the toy and wagging his tail. He was asking me to play a game that we play where we approach the toy together and I move different directions and different speeds and try to fake him out, but he can't go for the toy until I send him. He needs me to play that game. He cannot play it on his own. He wasn't asking me to throw the ball for him or to play fetch or even to play tug. He was asking me to play this game. The game has rules. He's bought into the game. That is what I'm looking for. Long-term with a protection dog is that they bought into the game and recognize that there are rules to the game and that they want to control themselves from the inside. Not because there are ramifications. And a ramification can even be a positively reinforced within that camp of just bringing the dog back and doing it again. That's still a ramification. I want it to because the dog recognizes, oh damn, I didn't do it the right way. I'm supposed to wait till I'm sent and then I explode. That's my goal is to get to that point where the drives and control are the same game and the dog is buying into the entire picture. So where does that leave us in terms of when we start our dogs? Well, the problem with starting eight-week-old puppies is it's very hard to keep that balance if the dog has

nothing to resort to, no games at all. Can you start at eight weeks? Yes. If I had access to a decoy, would I at eight weeks? Actually, yes, I would. But I would start, like I said, I'm doing some play stuff. They're doing some play stuff. So the dog is just having a good time working with new people. It's not really protection-oriented at all. It's just playing games with dogs. It's toy play, really. But I also think you can easily wait until your dog is a year or two years of age and spend that time becoming an unbelievably good player with toys. So what does that mean? It means that your dog has all sorts of games that are based in obedient skills, like I just described of stocking up to the toy, or games where you throw toys and you call your dog off to another toy, or you throw toys and you let the dog get the toy, or the dog gets the toy and you ask them to drop, and then you ask them to let the toy go. There are so many things we can do with our dogs, so many games we can teach them that can literally duplicate all of the pieces that you need of the protection game. And remember, the actual biting part is very small. And a high percentage of people who just want to get into the sport, they're experienced in other stuff, they're not trying to get 99s and 100s in individual areas, they're not trying to be at the top, they're trying to do something, which is fun for them and their dogs. That doesn't mean that I don't think positive methods can get high scores, I actually absolutely believe that they can get high scores. But the primary driver for most people is to do it, it's the accomplishment itself. So if you take a two year old dog that's had no bite development, but a huge amount of training around, let's say with a ball, I'm not talking about aggression or anything. Teaching the dog all of the tracking, all of the obedience and all of the secondary obedience skills that are going to be required in protection with a toy or maybe a toy and a friend, I think that has enormous value. And we are I think more people are talking about that now and more people are using it and realizing that it's not a perfect scenario. It's not like you're going to do that and then your dog is just going to immediately look at a decoy and say, oh, this is the tug game that I play with my mom's helper friend who comes over and does tug with me. I don't think that's true. There will be a transition period. But there's also a transition period if you think about it when you go from training a dog to do obedience for food and then

you train them for a toy. Yeah, it does change the picture, but we still train with food first because it's still easier. And when we make that transition to toys, it's still going to be a smoother and more seamless transition. The same is true if you do something with food and then you do it with toys and you're doing it with toys and your friend, let's say in your yard, your most training familiar place. Then you do it at a public park, just you. You're just playing with a toy. You're not doing bite work. So it's not a problem to do that. Then you're doing it with your friend in a new novelcation. All of those little steps are breaking it down and making it easier for your dog to be successful so that when you do go to the club, a few things are going to happen. One, the dog is going to be mature and have a much easier time handling aggression if your trainer uses aggression in the sport. That's more of an IGP thing. I see a lot more aggression in that sport because of how it's judged than I see in Ring. Actually, when I bought my first, I imported a dog, I guess it was about 20 years ago and she was my first dog specifically working bread for Ring. And that was the first time I realized that in Ring, they make friends with the dog. The decoy goes to some trouble to be an advocate and a friend of the dog. I was coming from an IGP world where not really. I mean, they see the dog, it's a, they try to make the dog successful and they build the dog up, but it's still an adversarial relationship on some level. That's a really different mindset. And if you're going to be in a place where there's an adversarial mindset, then you might want to work with an adult dog. If you're working with a decoy as a different way of looking at it for whatever sport, then yeah, younger works. If you're working in Ring, you're more likely to see that friendship oriented approach. It's just, sports have different cultures. Sports are not, it's not one size fits all, even though the training has huge carryover. Like if you have a Schutzen three dog and you go over to Ring, you're going to have a much easier time getting through Ring than a person who's starting from zero and the reverse is true as well. I mean, you'll have some places where the training conflicts a little bit, but mostly you'll be ahead of the game. Another thing I've talked about, and I think is important is to go into a club with your dog trained as much as possible, because not all clubs are going to be open to the idea of force-free training, or they may be open to it, but just don't know how you would go about doing it. That's

different than just eliminating corrections. In that case, when you walk in and you demonstrate that you're competent and that you've trained the dog, you're going to get a lot more cooperation. Now, in terms of who I would be looking for for a decoy, different sports have different cultures, and you're going to get different attitudes. In some clubs, you're going to get an attitude that the decoy does all the training, sets the plan, and they're not particularly interested in your opinion. You're going to have a hell of a time doing a force-free route if that happens to be the perspective of the decoy. In other clubs, the decoy's attitude is going to be fine. I don't have a problem with that. Just tell me what you want me to do if the dog doesn't release. They're neutral. They're not really going to tell you how to do it. You're still going to have to figure it out, but they're open to it. Then your best case scenario is a decoy who may or may not be familiar with how to set a foundation for a more positive approach, but is curious and interested and wants to cooperate. I've actually had super good luck in the Mondio world with decoys who seem super comfortable with doing things differently. In my opinion, of all the biting sports, Mondio has the most flexibility in terms of a person coming in with some different ideas. They just don't seem to care that much if you want to do different stuff as long as, you know, take responsibility for what you get. If you get a mess, well, it's your mess. But coming in as a novice, I do not see bite sports as a great place to get started. I just, I think it's a complicated set of skills that we're asking. I think there are other sports that are much better places to learn to read your dog and learn about training in general because the whole bite sports thing is huge. There's just, there is so much there to understand and learn. For many, many years, I taught seminars on drives and control and toy play. And I didn't even know that that wasn't sort of a staple in the more AKC world because in the bite sports world, it's sort of a staple that toys are used for reinforcement. And really that wasn't true in AKC. So if I started teaching seminars, I have to think about this, was when Rekha was a baby. So that would have been, let's say 20 years ago, I started teaching seminars. That means that in 20 years, we've made a huge evolution. From using food, if we wanted to reinforce, to using toys as a staple. And the most common question I got, and what caused me to start seminars on drives and control, was people would say,

but how do I use a toy? And I would say, well, you just substitute it where you used food. And that just was not resonating for people at that time. Times have changed. And I think at this point, your ability to find trainers who are comfortable with toys is going to be way, way higher because so many more people are doing it. But that's, that is a transition that has taken place in the, I call that the AKC world or more the AKC sports world. Also the advent of agility would have been relevant as well. Agility has not been around forever. I was around, let's see, Justin was, did agility. So that would have been about 27, 28 years ago that I would say like the mid-1990s is when agility started. And that did impact people's use of toys because they found out that the dogs run faster and it also reduced compulsion. But I'm kind of going off on a side tangent here. What I really want to talk about though, is if you want to do force-free bite sports, in my opinion, you're going to want to set a different foundation. You want a foundation set in cooperation, not in high levels of arousal that you try to bring down later, because I think that's a super difficult path. I think every training session, you need to think about it and talk to the decoy about your concerns, where you think your particular dog is strong, where you think your particular dog is weak. If you don't have that information, they can help you get it for sure. But make sure that you're asking them, what are you doing and why are you doing it? And what are your thoughts about how this is going to impact control later on? If everybody's thinking about it and talking about it, you get on the same team because you need your team. You need your club, you need your decoy, but you don't need them right away for things like secondary obedience. If you're an experienced trainer, if you're not an experienced trainer and you go out and buy a really good dog, a really good working dog, and you go to a club, you can be successful, but you're going to have to follow the path that that club follows. Whatever it is, it's going to be very hard for them to explore a new way of doing things with you. If you don't already come in with thoughts and ideas and basic skills on board, and I just think that's kind of an unrealistic ask. If somebody asked me to help them do that, I would be leery because people come and go a lot. They show up at a club or a trainer and they're all excited and they want to do this thing. And two months later, they decide they're not

so excited anymore and they don't want to do the thing. Fine, but people don't want to waste their time, especially on clubs which are heavy on the volunteer side of the equation. So in summary, try to start with the dog bred for the sport. It's going to make a big difference. It's going to be a whole lot more fun, a whole lot easier for you. My very first dog was not bred for the sport. I did end up putting a championship on him, a UDT with high and trial awards in AKC or one at the nationals. He had tracking titles. He did have a Schutzen 3. And what I said afterwards is I'll never work that hard again. It was very difficult because he just didn't have that basic level of push and drive that we want to see in a working dog. It is possible, but it's hard. So I would suggest you get a dog that's well suited to the sport. I would suggest you go into every training session asking yourself, how are you going to balance drives and control? And how are you going to balance the dog's interest between the decoy and the handler? Over the years, I've picked up a fair bit. The last couple of dogs I did my Schutzen titles on were not only working bred, but I was very vested in the idea of doing it without tools. And I really wanted to do that. Now, what I can't say is that I never used tools because I just don't remember. I didn't have an epiphany where I woke up one day and never did. But I do know that if you ask the decoys I worked with, they'll say, no, that wasn't her thing. She was doing harnesses and flat collars. And that was working for me. But I'm also going to say that what I learned from those dogs, even getting high scores on them, I don't really use that information. It's not how I train now. And that doesn't worry me. It's the same as when I got my obedience championships. The way I trained those dogs in obedience, there was no compulsion that I'm sure of. It was reward-based, but it's still not how I teach exercises today. And that is because I've learned every year, every dog you train, every dog you see, every seminar you go to changes how you think. And watching other trainers who are sophisticated in all different sports. I watch people who do bird dog work. I watch people who do protection work. When I'm watching people train and thinking about modification, I'm not worried about what I did in the past that worked for me. I'm thinking about, oh, that would prefer this. If I did that, it would probably prevent this issue I had or that issue I had. So like, for example, how I teach

healing today is nothing like how I taught it to my obedience champions. It's very different, but it's better. And I don't need to compete in obedience to know that. I just know it. I know it because I've done stuff in the past and I can see where I don't have the same holes. The way I use props today versus how I used props in the past. There's lots of things I do differently. I have not proven those things in the ring. I haven't been in the ring in several years. I'd say at least maybe seven or eight, maybe around there. I'm not sure, but it's been a long time. It doesn't change the fact that you continue to grow and learn by working with dogs and seeing things and filling in the gaps. The terrier I have here was probably one of my greatest learning epiphanies. If it, if man, if there was anything to cement the fact that dogs come with a temperament and ideas of their own, that little dog certainly convinced me that Belgians are fantastic to train. They bring so much to the table. They allow me to get away with sometimes just straight up bad training because they're so forgiving and they're working so hard to understand. And he taught me a lot about doing better. So there's some irony there that probably working with him is one of the most fundamental things I did. What I really did learn from the dogs I competed with is how difficult it is to go from training to competition and the little details about how many different places you have to train, how many different people you have to train with. I hadn't realized before those dogs, how stressful, especially if you compete frequently, which you do, if you want to get a championship, how you're going to keep the dog in the game for the long haul that I've not changed my perspective about, and I will prepare my dogs the same way with that. But the actual skills, the skill building, the thinking about arousal and change, I am on a better path. Now I am quite sure of that. I am on that more force-free side of the scale. That's how I see myself. There are others who are accomplishing already in dog sports, all manner of things in both field and in like AKC obedience. Petra Ford just won the national obedience championship a couple of years ago with a force-free dog. That was a big deal. I've certainly not done that. And I never will because I don't care enough about competition. That's not my driver. I'm a trainer. It's really what I love. Other people are competing in Mondio and French Ring and IPO or IGP force-free. We share a lot of the same techniques.

I would say most of our techniques are very similar and we have our differences and that's excellent because the more different things people are trying out, the more open they are about these conversations and talking and interacting, the more options we're going to have long-term to explore and the better we're going to get. And I really think over the next 10 or 20 years, we are going to skyrocket in our understanding of how to bring dogs up in the instinct sports, regardless of sport, so that even if you do choose to use compulsion in your program, that is going to be severely minimized in quantity. And I've already noticed that generally the high-end trainers in most sports use actually a lot less compulsion because they don't need it. They're very clear in their communication. And so the dogs figure things out very quickly. And so it becomes much less of an issue. So anyway, those are the things I want to say. I would love to see more people involved in instinct sports, not using compulsion. And I think hopefully this gives you some information to think about if you decide to do it. And I wish you the best.
