all right this is it we're live as promised eight o'clock Brussels time 2 p.m est so what are we going to talk about today is uh loading the clip loading the click not really like talking about loading a clicker we're going to talk about markers and the priorities that you make in your doc training all right so uh let's just uh introduce you first Becky so uh thank you for joining me you're on the SCS K19 and we're going to talk to you a little bit about your previous journey on what it is that you did before and what it is that you did today hey guys hey Alisa hey Madeline welcome and uh really excited about this one you know because marking has been such a huge thing for people traveling and seeing people train I always see them you know raising their hands when I ask who's where you know who's using a marker why is using always a marker so but let's just see in depth like what are they doing with this marker what does it mean to them and uh you know what are the priorities that people you know put on themselves like when it when you get a new dog what is the first thing that you're going to do besides making him potty you know outside and stuff like that that's the obvious but what is the first thing that you're going to do all right so let's just put on that question so people can respond this is interactive you don't need to hold back you don't need to be shy you can just put in the comments so we can read it what is the first exercise that you would train if you got a new dog or you you got a puppy in what would be the first thing that you would train what is the first thing that you would do with your dog hey guys from Puerto Rico we got people from Swiss Alaska wow Great Britain nice good to see you guys so think about think with us a little bit what is the first thing that you would train when you get your new dog so um Becky can you uh pop up the the screen with what the latest poll said like uh two weeks ago I asked the same question in a post and people responded and this is what came out so at two weeks ago the people that I asked on my channel said number one would be a recall what they would train number two would be the marker see that's why it's interesting to talk about the marker number three would be the set command number five would actually be the no command and the five would be the stay command so what is a marker all right great question so for people that don't know what a marker is I went out to get it here it is so this is a marker for example a clicker but you can also use a verbal marker so that means this neutral

signal is introduced to a dog and the purpose is that you teach him a response a conditional response what they call it in the science terminology to make a dog understand that's exactly what I want sounds great doesn't it now the question then is well then how great is it actually when you put it into practice because all the love that we have for Pavlov he wasn't a dog trainer now was he so let us just see what it does today for us and and when it comes really into play to kick up the action and to become an asset an attribute that you really want to have so um do you feel uh there it comes uh do you feel clickers are better versus verbal clickers are consistent well you see that's a that's a great question and uh before we get into that let's let's put this one on hold a little bit because I think we first need to talk about the importance of the marker before we start talking about the preference when we're going to use a marker so let's put that one on hold um Brian I think it is so uh we'll get back to that one hey from Germany Farina thank you for joining all right somebody says hello pretty lady I assume that's uh towards you Becky hi all right so hey Ben Ben good to see you so uh all right guys you can put in the comments what is the first thing that we're going to train um can I start use a clicker now if I didn't use it at the beginning you see there's a lot of confusion it surprises me you know that there's still a lot of confusion now let us start with the beginning who told us to use a marker can you go back in time can you go back into your memory and dig deep and think who ever told you to use either this or this verbal marker than what we call to say yes to do all these things to there's and there's even different kind of markers Becky help me out with this so there's people also using a duration marker right I think you're one of the people that used to use a duration marker then there's the release marker as they call it there's the marker where you kind of have them stay keep doing what you're doing I think that's the same as a good right keep doing the same as a duration yeah duration markers all that kind of stuff so you see so people build actually varieties in the marker training very confusing stuff if you ask me because dogs are pretty straightforward and when you put on an action plan that should be straightforward as well you shouldn't be doubting things you shouldn't be crashing scratching your head and thinking what is this for what is the purpose of this and that's something that you got to ask yourself with everything that you do what is the

purpose here of what I'm doing what is the outcome what is the direct impact that I'm creating with this dog based on the tool in this case the clicker that you're using what does it mean to your dog what does it do now Becky let's go back in time a little bit before we met before you adapted to you know the system and and became part of the team I want you to talk a little bit about where you got your marker idea from and and what it did for you and and why you started doing it in the first place so let us go back and go the first working dog you got which is biker first true working dog um that what did you do what were what was your top three of things that you taught your dog as a puppy and talk us a little bit through the markers that you started using and why um I initially like with biker um with my previous training systems I guess to go back before that um and previous studies we did more of a a good and uh yes like yes would be released we did more verbal markers we also did touch base on clickers as well okay and then we also did no all right so are you talking so you got a working dog but you were referring to sources that were into pure working dog training or more pet training or was like a cross between pet and working dog what was it it was definitely a cross between both because uh in the training system there were both working dogs and pet dogs previous two okay and did you see like a distinction between when they were working working dogs in the marker system and using pet dogs was there any difference or was that kind of the same that covered all um I think it became uh more individually based because I found that uh in a lot of cases with pet training that the timing and everything got lost into the marker system and it became too complex and too confusing to work with all of the different verbal markers or clickers uh versus the working dogs uh with uh working dog handlers they uh they're generally better with their timing and and they have that not to say that there aren't exceptions as well but um yeah I found that the working dogs people like tend to have a better grasp on the timing of it but in terms of performance they're in terms of performance between your system and their system I found that it's a little easier so before we get into performances and stuff so you started implementing what I then would call the crossover between working and pet training and you use a what a clicker when you first trained your little puppy a clicker and verbal okay and uh what what kind of

reaction did you get like were you really happy using this clicker everything worked out fine um I mean in the beginning they he didn't really understand what the clicker meant until uh we kept using it consistently it's the same with the verbal marker as well so um he as soon as he started to understand that a reward immediately followed then of course the clicker became more valuable and valuable to who to you or to him uh to him because he was getting his source well sorry that I interrupt but let's say I wouldn't use any clicker never heard of it going in with the dog got my pockets filled with food per definition with a high drive dog I am interesting right because I got the food if I'm coming in quick with everything that he does in close proximity and I can reward him whenever he does these things what would be the benefit of using a marker for example would there be any benefit only for future down the road perhaps but it's not needed right away all right so here we go so only for future down the road so what is your vision then and you don't need to respond to this but let's address the people that are watching this you got to have a vision because if you say right now from the performances that you have from your dog it wouldn't have been all that much of a difference if you would have used that food in your hands and get him the reward right away and not mark any of it if you would have just not said anything to him no good boy no marker no yes no cheerleading nothing he would just be straight to the point give him the reward whenever you felt it was something good that he did and you open your hand and he got the reward that would be already reinforcing for the dog he wouldn't need your marker he wouldn't need your verbal praise he wouldn't need anything because he got what he wanted so of course not down the road there's where you kind of make sense and say okay you might need this when you're going to use fade fading techniques when you're going to use a differentiation between you know rewards are you going to use food now you're going to use a ball like there's even some protection work going on do you still have control over these rewards or it's just like a release of a marker and then get anything what you want you see so there's a lot of nuances that you have to understand when it comes to marking and people i feel don't really understand all the nuances all the time so that means they pick up something which is okay guys use a marker and then they use a verbal or a clicker we'll talk about that later but then they really don't have

a plan or a vision what this thing is supposed to do is this supposed to acknowledge that the dog is doing fine and then he just keeps on doing what he's doing is that a set me free and i'll do whatever i want is that a i'll click and snap out of whatever i was doing and then come get something at your place there's many many accents you can give this thing and uh but before then we start really focusing on this clicker because now you already feel it we have options here somebody says hey charging a marker is an imperative before using it i completely disagree that's why i love having interactive debates why because i never really think about loading something i think about different things and that's why we have to do a priority or make a priority on things that we need to trade if your priority maria is loading a clicker by the time you load that how you can respond how long it would take you to load it right but you can get a conditioned response with a young dog in five to ten minutes even you can get a conditioned response really you can have like if you put on you know click it comes to food click that comes to food you can see the dog going click on it where is that where is it coming from so you can see that condition response so when it comes to loading it doesn't require a whole lot of skill everybody can press this button right and everybody can open up their hand brain right so if you're going to train a puppy so you have this challenge in front of you or you have to train this working dog so that means you have to think fast you have to act fast you have to move precise there's so many things that you should be considering and what you're going to focus on is pushing this so you can communicate with him now i get that i get that you need to communicate with your puppy and with your dog but the first way a dog communicates is not necessarily through your marking system is through the movement and through the delivery on what you're doing so the first way of communicating is through movement because if you want to do all these things you have to show them how to move in these positions and it doesn't really matter if you like spin them let's go with the basic of the basics the pup you get the puppy and you spin around his own axle and you open up the food you i mean you open up the hand i mean there there it is he he ran around and he chased it got the hand open so that's the first thing that you teach your dog basically is you teach him how to move it you don't really teach him how to you know go on with a clicker because what that does is you are now

multitasking already got this in one hand and this in the other hand now who says you're already at the level where you can handle a super fast puppy he's trying to bite your hands who's chasing who's gotta you know who's gotta learn how to be precise how to coordinate his body and on top of that you're finding that sweet spot when you got a mark when you got to open up it might be already too much and that's why i wanted to do this that's why i wanted to reach out to people that want to watch this and and say hey maybe this shouldn't be your first priority because that's what everybody says right you go and see any dog trainer these days oh load a clicker you know get a marker says who what what kind of result will i get if i do this a dog that can respond it has a conditional response to a neutral signal oh great i can teach that to a 10 year old dog i can teach that to an eight week old dog that's not going to be the super challenge there's some professionals out here now how long does it take to get a conditional response out of a dog it shouldn't take all that long that's the easy stuff guys so why are you prioritizing the easiest stuff first because that's something you can handle is pushing that button i understand that's something that you want to do but that's maybe not what you should be doing look i've met a lot of trainers that had you know big ambitions on what they wanted to achieve with the dog and they were talking and marking all day right verbally or with a clicker you can you can choose you can pick and what i saw was they they're not getting they're not moving forward because they're not hitting those angles they're not controlling the speed they don't see they don't have the eye for precision what i call so that means oh they they're already delivering rewards or marking but it's sloppy so then you should ask yourself then what are you going to mark because if you're looking to mark a highlight if you're looking to mark something that is really good but you don't have it yet because they're not completely in this kind of movement yeah you you can't focus on coordination you know symmetry with you and your dog synchronization that should also be one of the things that you need to train and not necessarily load that clicker first look and and becky you can you can also interact if you like if you would have not have used the clicker the first six to eight months with vikers you think that would have been a significant difference in his overall performance today no i

don't believe so and i'll tell you why because i remember that when you dropped your first video when we started doing a video submission review and i saw that your marker at that point was a release i said this kind of marking training with that kind of dog with the vision that you have for him which is to have control over his drive at all times is going to get you in trouble because if a dog is set free is released by marker and he gets to choose whatever he wants to do you know what he's going to pick right if he's got all the high drive is he's going to do the protection work is he's got so that means at some point your marker will be a anticipation for your dog and that anticipation is always based on the highest reward the highest source in his proximity in his environment that means you're now competing with your marker so all the time when you were you know laying the foundation of your marker training you were setting yourself up for a marker that was going to be not your ally but your enemy in the highest state of drive now why is that because if you if you set everything up and you have the highest state of drive which is for working dogs mostly if you go ever to the highest you know of intensity usually that is a protection work if you make a marker a release and he gets to go and bite whatever he wants that sort of anticipation that you will get by you wanting to communicate and tell him hey this is exactly what i want but it results in you know immediate release and biting what he wants there's no way you're going to control his drives he's going to control his drives he is going to decide what he's going to get and he's going to anticipate on your style of communication at a rate that you cannot handle anymore so what will happen is you will not use this clicker anymore we'll put in your pocket and say i'm done clicking here i am done clicking because my dog is anticipating like crazy always forward that means you're going off balance everything that is in his advantage and it's exactly leading to what he wants so your clicker that you so long have prepared to use to communicate can no longer be used that is the problem so but let us just take a video uh with us so we can we can actually see what i'm talking about okay so all right so in this case starting out with rocky for example doing a few obedience moves so only sit front and heel position is look at me all the rest is a default looking at the target and here we're going to approach the target a little bit closer

click and he snaps out of it accepts the reward but then goes straight back to the target that's always his default where he reverts to okay so he reverts to the decoy when i click that means i can make him snap out of it he comes out of it he will accept wherever i give him even if it's the tiniest piece of food you do teach him that you condition him also to do these kind of things which are way more important than just you know only loading clickers the first days is you know how to downgrade how to accept lesser rewards better rewards all that kind of stuff and then in this setting in this equation you still have control over the dog's drives and what he wants to accept if that clicker was just to do whatever you are and keep doing it nothing would change if it was a release set free he would just grab the decoy would be a problem because that then would be the only reward that i can give because he would tell himself it's that guy it's that one that's the one i need to get and that's a problem right so but of course if you've not been exposed to this problem if you are new and you think that the marker should be the release by default and do whatever he wants you don't know this is going to happen because you haven't been in this situation right and now for the people that use a marker as a keep doing whatever you're doing you're clicking some people are clicking and this dog keeps going keeps going keeps going click keep going click keep going keep going that's also something i can't wrap my head around because if you wouldn't have clicked he also would have kept going but i see if i go in the human brain i start to see okay then you probably want to tell him that he's doing a great job but if he's doing a great job you might as well then give him the reward but then if you give him the reward why should he keep going because if that reward for example was a ball you don't you know want your dog that when he gets the ball and then he would keep going with the ball in his mouth that's something that you go of course not no when i throw the ball when i toss the ball it's over it's game over he doesn't need to do anything more when i toss the ball then he can just walk around with the ball and chew it do whatever he likes but for some reason people start using markers which should be at some point a replacement of your rewards and then they expect this dog to keep doing what he's doing now how do you explain that becky how do you explain that that you know you want the dog to understand that a reward that means that's it that's what i want you to do and it can be replaced

by a ball for example if you've done the the job well and then when he gets the ball you don't want him to keep doing what he's doing that would be impossible also you can't just have a dog like catch the ball and then stay put so that's why people i believe created the duration marker right a duration marker to let the dog know you know what you're doing great keep doing this keep doing this you feed him good and you keep doing this all that kind of stuff that's also something i couldn't wrap my head around really because i believe it was also to uh build anticipation that a reward is coming uh from like i said from previous training i believe it was to help elevate the dog um in order to anticipate that the reward is going to be present shortly so then they you could notice the elevation of drive that's always the case as soon as you go into a dog training he will always assume the reward is coming once he does not assume the reward is coming he's not even there anymore you can go look for him he's gone he's out he checked out working dog training is all about manipulation all about manipulation you make him believe it's coming man it's coming so why you even have to tell him it's coming he knows it's coming because that's that is the foundation of your training he knows it's coming he's gonna move combinations combos what i do with little puppy 10 15 20 combos because he knows it's coming why does he keep going he knows it's coming do i have to tell him to keep going good good no i don't because he knows it's coming anyways so i can choose when it comes so why should there be this in-between world where you can tell him good now okay let's go into the position of the dog here right i'm a dog and i'm trained that i do stuff and when i do stuff at some point it will come exactly what you say it will come rather it be the ball the food or whatever you have in store something's going to come and it's going to be good now when i'm in this position that you want me to do because in the end what dogs want to control is also movement and directions they want to actually do something else at some point but they're not doing it because they believe if they keep doing what they're doing they're probably going to get also a reward out of this now when you say good what exactly changed about my life that i didn't have a second ago nothing i'm still in this position waiting for it to happen right now you say good again now i'm still in this position waiting to happen so what difference would it make if i didn't use the word good and just

extended this behavior with two seconds and then gave him the real reward see and that's why i've never used the word good in my hole i never used the duration marker and yet i'm able to train a dog now what does that mean all you guys saying good to your dog are wrong look that's not about wrong or right i'm talking about efficiency if i can do less and i can have the same outcome or in some cases even a better outcome that means we should be looking also about maybe not having to do that because the less we have to spend time and focus on doing that kind of communication when it's not really helping us all that much then maybe we should revisit the way we are doing things but you don't have to why not because your whole life probably you said good and it all worked you see it all worked why change the winning combination if the world champion tells you i i told my dog good we got the world champion two weeks ago here on a podcast a private one for the mvps but we're going to ask him again for a public one and the world champion says i use duration markers for example right then the whole world will say yes bravo exactly what i'm doing that's the road to my world championship level he uses a marker duration marker i should use a duration marker that's how traditional training works is you get a guy that has success in whatever he does and then you ask him how do you do it and then he'll tell you a few things that that's exactly what i'm going to do and that's why i said it uh to you know two weeks or last week in a different podcast is just observing and imitating what somebody does is not going to get you the same outcome because a performance is based on your unique combination of skills your passion your discipline your focus and you know your speed of learning curves etc and same goes for the dog so it's not just a copy paste that you can apply so you shouldn't just take you know he does that yeah okay that's great but maybe he would have been the world champion also if you've never marked in his life really i mean that he could have been the world champion not marking ever not marking like completely not marking for example i'm going to give you an example guys you got to use your imagination here a little bit let's say i would have my dog heel with a ball underneath my arm let's say not that i do that but for example there's a lot of people that do that kind of stuff when the dog is healing i open up the arm do i need a marker to do that no i just open up the arm well these days they have devices they have

electronic devices that you can sew in your pocket you can put that ball in there so he doesn't see anything right and then there's an electronic button that you can use to open up like a vault hope and then the thing pops out do we need a marker we don't need a marker to do that dog is in his position healing boom all of a sudden the thing drops great don't need a marker to do that so he might have had the best healing in the world a hundred score without ever using the marker but yet let's say he says he uses a marker you're gonna think the marker it's all about the marker because that's something you can handle right that's something you could do so we take the stuff that we see now i see myself doing that i can see myself you see yourself pushing this button i think i can do this right but then i see for example a few years ago i do a freestyle in san francisco without a dog i didn't see any people freestyling the next week because you probably thought oh well that's that's awkward i don't see myself moving that way and sure as hell not when everybody's looking you don't want to look awkward you don't want to look weird but i can do this right let's stick with this you see people want to do what they assume is tangible is something i can see myself doing this and you reach out to this clicker this marker and you make it become something that it's not it's not going to make your dog lightning fast it's not going to make your dog super precise it's not going to make your dog dynamic and elegant and explosive and all everything that he does it can help for sure it could do things at some point look i even got my label on this so that means i do use it i do use it but i don't believe that this is going to be the key element of my success truly not if i could choose right now today would you want like the perfect marking in two weeks or a little puppy that can do a combo of 10 50 moves at a time without using the marker let me choose the movement all day every day i'm going to choose the movement above this why because this is something you can implement at any time everybody that is out here you can teach a dog a conditioned response to a neutral signal but try to get a five to ten year old dog out that is stiff as a board huge dog you need to make a move all you professionals out there board and trainers you've done some board and training too becky didn't you like you know some years ago yeah and people bring you a dog and i would ask you hey becky you know could you teach my dog to respond to a marker you got 21 days three weeks in board and train could

you do that please all right you can let's let's go back to the banner here what the poll of results was okay so you're a board and trainer oh you can teach in the marker right okay nice can you teach in the sit maybe also in three weeks oh yeah getting the knot yeah okay i can do that recall can i give you the dog to recall you could do that too 21 days oh fantastic guys send your dog to becky right on top of that can you make him stay please stay good boy you can all right you've got 21 days you can all do do all of this and now if i tell you hey you got 21 days i want the perfect healing and the fastest combo middle to set front to heal in 21 days i want the angle straight i want the prance when i sit down i don't want him to just down i want to explode into that down and then when i call him he's gotta come shoot right through the legs go into a print all that kind of stuff could you do that in 21 days depends on the doc and my skills in combination yeah but that's gonna be a little bit tougher than just loading a marker wouldn't it correct yes so if you would have to pick your priorities if you knew that client was coming with that kind of ambition you would put your priority on different things and just making it stay making it sit of course yes and then the number four was even more significant it was teaching the note guys if you have a pet i understand that he comes in the house the first thing you gotta teach him don't need the couch don't need the cat and don't need the kids right so this communication that has gone viral now it's literally viral this influence that has gone viral of people saying no don't do that doc yes that's exactly what i want doc come get your treat and good keep doing what you're doing you're almost there almost oh it's coming it's coming yes now we got you okay so now i got three words three ways to communicate now problem is people think based on these three words you have established a communication now let me give you an example you go out and train your dog to do something and he's doing something and it's not exactly what you want you tell him no but it's not no because no means a no no that's not exactly what i'm looking for he's doing more like it good he hit the he hit the the spot yes great what is that kind of communication this is how people talk right no no no good yes you hit it but that's not how you train a dog if you truly believe this all this verbal communication him telling him that's it almost there yes you hit it you really believe that is going to build the ultimate performance dog if that's

what you're looking for okay let's just you know look at it from the scope of that is what you're looking for you know the fastest dog the strongest whatever whatever reason you bought the working dog you wanted to do something that he's really good at do you believe becky today that those three words are going to get you to that level where he is on the top of his game no no so no so you're saying now we need other other things to focus on all right i wouldn't hold a top priority for me to teach any of those in the very beginning but yet we do a poll and ask everybody that wanted to answer what is it that you would do first and actually the note was on the number four so you're first going to teach your dog not what not to do in the top five then to create something that he will need for the rest of his days that's because the pet influence majority of the professionals on this planet are pet trainers the majority so what happens is the pet trainers are getting more traction and voices and influence so their system whatever they do is climbing up that ladder of influence so when then somebody gets a dog a pure working dog for example i want to put on a performance he is going to go out there on what is available on youtube on the internet of what people are showing and that usually is all the stuff that we discuss is clickers the first time making a dog stay the first weeks by making a dog stay i mean look my little puppy now is seven months have you been following our challenges i've not put in a single challenge where he had to stay for 30 seconds i did now how long could he stay i have no clue maybe at this point 20 30 seconds probably but it's the least of my worries i have different priorities for this dog different priorities and is he going to be able to lay down for a minute yes he is it's not his biggest challenge his biggest challenge is how do i maneuver with you how do i you know move fast how do i use this body how do i bite how do i out how do i use technique technique all that kind of stuff that takes time that takes a lot of skill to build and it takes a lot of effort so you have to prioritize things differently okay and that's something i really wanted to share today because it's super important that you do the things that matter the most when it matters the most so when the dog with little puppy is young when you just get it you have to do things that will contribute to the vision that you have for this dog right so becky can you play your video because you know you change your system also

and i really would like you to share your video on how viker your dog your uh malinois uh you know was interacting with his ball he's super high drive super intense and you showed with that marker what it could create when it comes to creating an option for the dog so it wasn't just one dimensional where a marker would mean yeah that's it you actually gave it more depth because now there would be more options so let's let's play this video thanks yeah for sure oh i think we need to play it again uh okay yeah yeah okay here it is all right so yeah i'm i'm a big fan of that kind of stuff because you know the dog was getting zoned in into that's what i need that's what i need you marked and boom he snapped out of it and he was able to actually get the same reward from you right so this creates options this you know gives us more power over what reward we will use and the state of drive the dog is in if he can get him back from that kind of drive setting if you always confirm with the source over and over again that's not the best thing and on the other hand what people sometimes do is they revert everything to the handler and then they're surprised the dog is not engaging to the source he's not fast anymore he's not super powerful anymore he's not really being that dog that he could have been because everything is now reverted first to you then to the source anyway that's a whole different conversation whole different topic uh but here you showed that you you know had some really good impact on his behavior and and his drive so also also keep in mind that i was using the clicker as a general release beforehand so so whenever he heard the clicker it meant go for whatever highest value reward that you chose and then once we started getting coaching and having that um you know that session in place when you said you know if you let him dictate dictate what exactly he wants to go for you're going to lose control later down the road and then by expressing that it showed okay you know like if we're public we can't have them you know just running off of the field somewhere going for whatever he wants so it created a very good base and turning back to you know you can change it by controlling the environment and then building from there as well so it can be changed if if people want to change it yeah so yeah same you could like also put this in a scenario where you kind of throw food to the dog and let's say you don't want him to catch the food let's say if you would bark then a dog is used to hey when i get

marked i just pick up whatever i want you have food there's food right in front of him you mark then he's going to eat the food but if you make it really clear that the marker is where you decide what reward he gets well then you just get a you know you get more options from the dog so you can surprise the dog you can do you have way more attributes to use so let's talk about loading that clicker so somebody already said and marie i responded to you so load that clicker load that clicker i say like i don't load anything i don't know anything or the time that i want to implement it because you know if you get really sufficient with your movement and and you know how to coordinate puppies you could you could basically give commands almost the second day for example it doesn't really matter because if you can combine multiple skills well then you can add the marker and all that kind of stuff then it becomes something that you know you you increase the learning phase of the dog by using everything simultaneously but you know most people are just not ready to use everything simultaneously and that is not a shame why should you use everything simultaneously if you're having trouble mastering one skill now why you have to combine two because you see somebody else do it no you should you know prioritize the one that you're struggling with and that is gonna have the most significant impact on your dog in this case you need to know how to move guys really and people say hey look at the videos in the comments that we you know that we get usually when when videos go viral and we just had one uh like this week and we had a viral one like two weeks ago we're like plus hundreds of thousands of views what people always say is of course it's deluring right it's luring try it really try it you'll see how hard it is even if you have you know all the the the sources the assets in front of your dog's nose make him do it try to make him spin it do with 360 three times in a row see how he does he doesn't even know how to use his body because he's uncoordinated he wants to lift his butt you can't get the butt down even even when you can use whatever you want it's still hard now then comes a fading process and that's where the clicker because it also becomes very valuable because you replace that reward and you can manipulate things again and so instead of the food then you have the click in your hand pop click and then it comes to food etc this is all great in the fading phase but then again it's the same kind of people that ask you when can i stop luring that

don't know how to move first don't know how to lure the first thing they'll ask is when do i get rid of the food and then the next thing they'll ask is when i get rid of the clicker the next next thing we'll ask you when is he finally going to listen look that means you don't understand you have to consistently assess what's in front of you and you have to look at things and then see where it goes from what you see so you always have the perfect plan in mind that doesn't mean you execute it every day of course you know at a year you want your doctor to know everything that's not always the case sometimes you got to go with the learn with the speed of learning your own skills and i think you made a significant difference in your training when you started understanding the coordination of your dog better and synchronizing your movement to his that's why and i saw that you're talented and talented means that you have that fast learning curve you can't combine multiple skills at the same time i've seen you do it and and contrary to a competency where you you know can build this craft or skill over the years and years and years and regardless you know liking it or not but it's just going to take you a whole lot longer and same goes for your dog right so that's why some dogs are competent to do things and some dogs are super talented and the talent can you know be displayed in multiple facets so it's not just the smartest dog is the most talented dog it's it's not like that you know the way a dog moves you know it's it's also you you can see that you know the way you make it move in in two to three weeks how it adapts to that movement it'll tell you you know what he's capable of and some dogs are better than you know and this kind of stuff than than other breeds that's that's normal so all right so um let us see on uh what people think of all this stuff so when you use a marker and then another one would be the one or the double click and to me that doesn't matter if you click once or you do you know this or this this it doesn't make any difference you know you marked it you should respond it on the first one that's it so maybe there's some people i give it like multiple outcomes i've never done that to me if i clicked or double clicked it means either i was super excited and i might have gone click click but it didn't really matter to me i mean or to the dog i should say so one or double click is something that i never really cared about so maybe out of excitement i click twice but not maybe purposely so then another one would be do you prefer the verbal

marker or a clicker and this is interesting because the clicker at first because if you are all about movement you need to you know absorb a lot of information and it's really interesting if you can mark that you know just by a push like a reflex almost without first having to process and then create that sound and then the sun always has to you know sound the same right because you don't want to have any yes yes all right it always needs to be the same so this creates more consistency i believe but in the long term you know if you want to free up your hands and if you are going to work with multiple people for example in law enforcement where you're going to train a group of canine handlers and everybody's just clicking around clicking around that's going to be very confusing to some dogs and especially if everybody's working close proximity and then somebody clicks and all the other dogs go yeah this is it so that's going to be a little bit of a problem but i first start with this and then you can you know condition the dog to your new marker which can then be your verbal marker and then you have two markers for the rest of his days you'll have your verbal and this one so you can always revert to this one and you can add more to it so that's not the problem but i like to personally i like to start with this one like the clicker what they would call all right this chloe says a smart dog can be a disadvantage oh yeah yeah i was just actually talking to becky yesterday it could be a serious disadvantage because what happens every time you train a predator is you manipulate the dog you do things and assume the dog he's not on to you right that's why when you go to trial you know when dogs start losing focus they're like i'm onto this there's not nothing coming here what is this right and then they go lead their own lives it's looking at hey if it's not this guy maybe it's some something else that can please me and that's where things go south so then of course when the dog is very smart when he reads your body when he reads every movement when he knows you're like ah there's not really something on the end of it right that's when things get a little bit tricky that's when he goes outsmart you and he can outsmart you all day because that's all he thinks of what's next what's in his pockets do i smell something what do i see is a pocket zip is it not is it you know am i off these all these kind of things these dogs read it like an open book and they set up the trap because they're waiting for you

to acknowledge that oh it wasn't there you see it wasn't he was full of bs it wasn't there they're really smart dogs they'll give you the finger so that means fading is a craft on its own because fading means i'm going to try to see what i can do to get rid of all the the help because i already have something solid here now let's hope that i can remain this solid coordinated movement and get rid of the food get rid of the very obvious that's what you want that's the second phase and that's when the clicker can become really good but that doesn't mean the clicker is just going to bridge the whole thing you need to be subtle sometimes you need to go back to it he's on to me can't i better be ready at some point to still make sure that hey if it wasn't coming from this i was coming from this side you see there's so many ways then to creatively get yourself into action to adapt to what the dog is seeing that's not entirely right and uh and that's that's also a big struggle so you can tell that the struggle is not coming from oh the dog is used to markers or not the struggle is coming from analysis movement so that would mean your visual talent also do you extract the information that you see and then can you immediately find a solution that is going to avoid your dog outsmarting you avoid the dog anticipating on your fake what do you call it fate it's not there he's onto it you lose the attention you know how many people email becky how many people get us and say a dog doesn't focus as soon as i i have no food he doesn't focus as soon as the ball is in the equation he focuses on the source and then everything is all around the focus but the fact that the dog is interested in a source means that you can train him he's not trainable when you can't you know get him interested in anything then that's going to be hard to get a performance out of him you can make him a house dog you know that doesn't matter but it's going to be hard to get a performance working dog performance out of him so when you're going to use the assets that means you have to master these you really have to think of what kind of food how much food how am i going to hold this how am i going to steer it how am i going to to maneuver myself with this food how am i going to position my hand it's going to be this way on the outside on the inside i'm going to fade to the back i'm going to fade to the side i'm going to fade to the front all these kind of things people are not talking about they're not talking about it there's a whole platform called youtube and you can watch it every day and it's always going to be

the same guys pick up the clicker and click this thing and then give the food to the dog right yeah okay you got that now what literally now what you did it one day now what now you can teach him to say yeah okay he knows how to sit now okay he can he knows how to sit who controls the pace that's my first question who controls the pace you're the dog you want to make him sit how fast does he sit who controls that hmm well i guess i guess you right you control the pace oh how how you're already fading the next week sit sit sit he finally sits that's it and then hope every day when you go to sleep i wish he would be faster but maybe tomorrow he's bigger he's stronger he's faster and he's not he's still slow he is you are not leading the path you're not leading the way you don't understand fast twitch he's got to do it fast he's got to move fast you have to embed embed this stuff in him even though he was born natural with fast twitch muscles with quick responses you will have to guide and lead the way that's the beauty of training dogs yourself because when they do this you know it's because of you it was always in him but he can't expose it himself he can't he just can't you have to show him you can have the most talented dog untrained nobody's gonna watch it look how good he can fetch this ball and then he runs after it fetches it and nothing happens oh wow oh that's a beauty are you gonna watch this all day becky dog fetching a ball no what do you want to see you want to see a move uh show me how good he is show how good it is how he bites right the indication for all working dogs show me how good he bites look i've seen dogs like bite the first year as sloppy as you can imagine and it's good craft good technique good equipment after a year they finally found it and all of a sudden he's biting like he was worth a hundred thousand dollars no you can't do that really biting is also about body posture how does the dog stand with his legs where's the neck position all that kind of stuff so much that goes into bite development grip development that also i don't understand where people get their information from but that's a different topic i would love to discuss that on a different topic so can we use an e-collar like a marker robert can we use an e-collar like a marker so do you mean like a uh e-collar that has like a tone into it is that what you mean or you want to like give stimulation to a dog output and then use that as a marker you have to define a little bit what you mean all right christoph first movement if dog learn which position giving him a treat and release you

want to be in that position from one symbol combo and reward that you can make multiple combos yeah that's it i'm gonna learn that it's a marker clicker yes first is motivation by luring speed reward or that after i can put a marker i think no i agree i agree if i would have a student i would want him to be able to coordinate his his new puppy and that he can lead then he could show the path rather than pushing this button i mean a five-year-old can push this button a three-year-old can push this button but they can't train dogs why because they can't and analyze analyze what the dog has to do and what he needs and when he needs it and etc but he can they can push the button so go with the hardest thing first don't go with the most comfortable thing go with the hardest thing first and i know making a little dog move if you don't know how to move yourself that's going to be pretty awkward you've been there becky even though your dog moves super nice remember the first time you had to like really get into it you said oh this is awkward this is something that i'd rather not do oh but you rather not do it then okay then don't do it you see sometimes it's not about what you want to do or you feel comfortable with in the beginning it's also about what the dog needs what vision did you have for it well then go with that do that you see a dog that you like in his speed and performance well then become that kind of trainer who does that kind of stuff it's not all that hard people make it too complex sometimes so well christoph mvp yeah well he's a student so uh leave dog with board and train or train yourself seems like dog needs to train with owner to build bond i say amen to that alex i know a lot of people that you know are professional board and trainers will not like to hear but they're not going to go out of business why because people just don't like to do stuff themselves it doesn't matter if i say people all over the world please listen to me train your dog yourself it's going to give you the best bond you know the best results and it's just going to give you a lot of satisfaction that you've put in that work it doesn't matter people are not going to do it anyway so uh yeah train it yourself if you can master the craft who says they're better than you to start with did you ever do a talent assessment a skill assessment no of yourself you might be really good at this you just need a few weeks but hey your dog's going to need a few weeks too so why not both of you develop the skill at the

same time that works fine really i would encourage that for sure so good question yeah creating a bond is about you know if you become a source of interest for the dog where he can play he can move he can enjoy himself you know he can really engage that's what dogs do that's what dogs do they just love to move isn't that like you know something that is universal if you see a dog that can't move oh that's such a pity look at that dog he can't move anymore he broke his legs or he doesn't even have legs oh no see you want to see dogs move we love it we love to see that energy we love to see that going on and if that movement can be coordinated into a flow and something beautiful oh we love it even more without forcing the dog nobody wants to see the obedience for the dog is like the tail is all the way down it's like it doesn't want to be there it's still moving but it's not flowing these days the bar gets raised you know again and again and again the champions of 50 years ago would never be the champion today because they just use different methods and they were a little bit harsher for example dogs just didn't you know look as happy as they they might today so i think it's really important to to have a vision of where you want to go with your dog so when you were talking about um uh luring and fading the marker and what markers to use and everything i think those are things that really need to be um that people need to go into before they even like train with their dog to know exactly what game plan they have in place and evaluate themselves if it's going forward uh forward or backward from that goal so um like you were saying as well as with the bond um i i find that bonds increase the more that you move with your dog and the more that you do with them and and if you're proactive with them and you're part of that mood motion and movement and synchronization with them that it just it goes deeper and i feel like when i'm working with new people and they're learning how to move with their dogs when they start moving with their dogs they're just like oh my gosh i just had the most fun like they start letting the stuff go they start yeah they stop worrying about themselves so much and they and they go into it and i mean the the reason i talk about is because i mean i got stuck there myself and i still get stuck there time to time where i'm like i don't want to do that yeah yeah look becky go you make fun of it but i always tell you yeah your next level up is you not standing in your own way you gotta stop standing in your own way

really oh yeah it doesn't feel right it doesn't like ah i feel stiff i can't i can't oh yeah then you for sure can't look i'll tell you guys when the first time i wanted to you know do this kind of stuff and i'll go out i went out and i saw somebody do it exactly what i wanted i looked at it and i saw this dog flow and his movement and he was fast and he was precise and was explosive and i was looking okay now what is this handler doing here that cannot be done why is not everybody doing this why is this only one guy doing this right only a few guys and then i saw there's nothing here that can be done physically by physically mean he's not doing a handstand with multiple push-ups he was not super explosive he was not i would say you know a dancer by nature if you know an elegant you know ballet dancer no it was just like all of us he can move his two hands and he could put one foot in front of the other all right what you might have to do with a really young dog is bend over a lot so that can't hurt with your back so you get to train those quads a little bit so you don't have to waste your whole back training puppies which i find like that's also one of the challenging things is people just don't like to bend down the whole time which has them way too high with the luring and way too tight on the body which causes side effects as dogs leaning in and stuff like that and dogs trying to find their own positions because the guidance is not really crisp and clear so you guys got to start working on your own movement really because that's one of the the biggest things i always see show me your movement without a dog and i'll predict what's going to happen with your dog all the time really because you are the one transcending this stuff so if you're like very tight rigid and stiff how is this dog going to solve this problem then he's going to solve it by using his own imagination of well and i guess maybe you know a little bit like that or he's not going to flow that's for sure so you you have a big saying in this i just tagged a a line of edward who says don't forget the negative punishment marker believe it or not edward inside the training context inside the training context i have never used a negative punishment marker never just as i have never used the word good or a what you call duration marker i've never used that and i've never used a negative punishment marker so there is in my training equation there is no no it does not exist no it does not exist because if the dog does not do what i've

asked and what i've taught him what i've you know shown him then i can either decide to come in automatically with a correction if he doesn't respond or negative reinforcement as we would call it like slight compulsion whatever and he would go automatically into this behavior i would not have to warn them no something is coming what is that no something is coming to me that is outside the training context look dog is running and sees a rock and says i want to eat and bite this rock no and just before he gets it i can correct him with the leash or the e-collar or whatever that's not the you know the discussion point today it's not the topic but anyways you correct him yeah so you announced that you were going to do that but why would i ever do that in a training context that does not make any sense it does not make any sense because you taught the dog what to do so if he doesn't do what he needs to do that means you either have not trained it well enough or the dog is confused and when he is confused you go out and help him and not start telling me no no no it's a cold it's the the cold and uh hot game cold cold hot better warm warm hot no it doesn't work like that guys if he's confused go out and help him go out and help him with the food go out and help him with moves go out and help him with the leash with the moves and the marker go out and help him with the do whatever it takes to make it all clear on what he has to do but then when it has been made perfectly clear and he does not do what you want him to do now you can come in with what then we would call a correction which going to put him in the behavior that he does know because then all of a sudden he does remember you don't need to say no he knows you don't need to say no you don't need to warn you need to tell him well you already told him what to do so example because we need examples this is always theoretical right negative punishment marker i almost need to throw up when i hear this as a new dog handler if somebody would you know come up and say i just got my dog what do i do negative punishment marker verbal marker but all this terminology it makes me sick to my stomach really all right so don't worry about it too much first create build then when you build that means your dog understands when he doesn't understand or when he doesn't want to do let's say for example i tell him to bark and hold and he's done a bark and hold on the leash a million times he knows how to bark and all of a sudden he does decide that for some reason he is hung up on the decoy and he's just gonna smack him right away

without the barking do you think i actually run out there and say no and then come in with that correction no no no no no no no no for me as in he opens his mouth and as soon as he was going to he got a correction with that be it from the leash or the e-call or whatever but then that correction put them in the wanted behavior meaning that oh oh oh all of a sudden he barks how is that possible nobody said no nobody told him hey that wasn't what i wanted but he was able to put that correction in the behavior because he actually knew what the job was so that's how i see things recall same thing you recall the dog you've done it a million times the dog for whatever reason decides now i'm not going to come back would you say no or no i'm just exaggerating a little bit here i don't want to pull it by its hair but you know you know you're just going to give him that pop that little correction because you already said what he needed to do now if you for whatever reason doubt that he heard you that is a different story it might be on the highway so there's some traffic he might have not heard you then you recall him again you give him a second chance right the benefit of the doubt is what we would call it that's it look guys you could do way less now but it's what bottom line is you can do way less and get more out of it less confusion for the dog so unless you actually start talking to a dog the better it gets you know when i talk to him i talk to him the stuff that he needs to do heel between sit front do all that kind of stuff that's what i when i talk if not not talking not saying anything i'm not saying anything when he's when either it's super good or it's if it's not i'm going to help him by movement by using the reward better using the leash better doing whatever it is that i need to use skill wise to make him do it better i can't talk him into doing it better i can't i wish i could because that would make it easy no no good yes that would make it easy right i'm telling you we've been brainwashed here brainwashed not uh purposely by the people they that ones that are telling us this i truly genuinely believe they also want to help they also want to help because that worked for him that worked for them her whatever yes but maybe that's not the only way things can work if you prioritize things differently you see and that's where we're going it's not about good versus evil bad versus wrong everybody's right the good thing about dog training is everybody's right because if you win it if you do it if your dog understands it

and if you're happy whatever you did i guess that was good unless you kicked the out of him for no reason but i mean obviously then you're right and that's why dog training will always be arbitrary everybody can hop on this life right now and tell me idiot you're full of you're lying or it's just not true not tell you well i have the videos to prove it that's exactly what i do and that's exactly how i get the result and if you don't like it well bad luck for you but that's how i got the result okay next question that would be if you want to play fair you would ask well then how long did it take you to get that kind of result because like i said if it takes you five years to get that kind of result maybe it wasn't all that good then not that efficient so well then if you could say hey i did in less than 10 months for example that's interesting because if you could do all this stuff in less than 10 months that means you have years to go to enjoy and to do all the things to pick the fruits of the labor that you put in and that is what dog training is about is that it's going to be grinding it's going to be hard work it's going to be a lot of movement it's going to be hot and cold and you're going to have you know greasy hands sometimes and you're going to have you know uh you know some bumps around the road it's going to go up and then it's going to go down again a little bit but that's that's how everything goes in life there's never a straight line all the way up that's never how it happens so this is the part of puppy life that's why every day we get puppy questions got the dog that was easy part you got the dog you spend the money he's in shit now what do you prioritize isn't it like that to me it's like i don't even need to think about it because it's what i do but i can i live i empathize with the people that bought a dog today and ask themselves what do i do here what am i even doing why am i doing this stuff but this guy's doing it so i'm going to do it that's how it goes if you go to a club no matter how nice these people are they're going to tell you what they know which might be more than you know because you know nothing so they know more than you and that's why they're giving you advice does that mean you have to take that advice does that mean you have to take it i'll let you can if you want to be like they are so if you look at what they do and you say that's exactly what i want listen to them and if you ask them how long did it take you and they tell you reasonable time go out and do it but most of

the time what you find on youtube what you find on you know for free for example you know this is also for you you can take it or leave it that's why you know this is great because there's no obligations you can take this information and then apply everything or you could say hey the hell with this i'm just going to go whatever with what i i'm doing that's totally fine we don't have a coaching relationship there's no you know accountability towards me of what i'm telling you you can take it leave it you can use it look we're giving it the information because the information is one thing it's the application some people they're afraid to share theories right because they think if they know the theory everybody's going to do it you wish you wish everybody would do it it's not the case even if i tell you everything people have told me before i wish i could download your brain and then what then what well you would know maybe things doesn't mean you're going to do it doesn't mean you have the you know the same skills doesn't mean you build the same skills so many things that go into it but at least understanding what could work for a dog might be a good one to start so all right so we could do some q a's if you guys like i missed a few um i missed a few lines here oh adwords that was sarcasm well sorry man i didn't know that the it sure as hell didn't say that so i thought you know yeah that was worth mentioning um there are trainers out there too that seem to have decent results and they do a lot of verbal markers and cheerleading with their dog as well what's your take on that yeah well good for them i'm so happy they do because look usually when it comes like if your best trait is talking to a dog i don't believe you're going to get that crazy good results but some people have some skill and then they talk over it and they believe that it's a combination of this talk and what they do and then they got this great result because of the talking because that's something tangible they can relate to i did that i marked really well i i talked to the doc i motivated him it was all me or maybe it was maybe if would have not said anything and done the same thing physically you might have had the same outcome who's there to say right that's why it's it'll always be arbitrary we can all come in here and come with great theories on why i got five titles and why i got three certifications on police docs and all of that kind of stuff well you can get an ovation you can get a validation through a certificate but you'll never get a scientific validation not ever so that's

why great great but do not use that reference as it worked for you it's going to work for everyone just as i'm saying hey that's what i do it's probably not going to work for everyone you got to be into movement if you don't like to move you don't like to be active you don't want to be involved don't do this it's not going to lead to anything you might as well then go ahead and load your marker and start talking away that's up to you guys really nobody's making you do anything nobody's making you do anything when it comes to dog training at you know usually when you go to a club they make you do things not like physically make you do things but psychologically make you do things if you go in there as a novice the newbie and the the guy with the most experience in there says hey you know try doing that you're going to turn around and say you know what grandpa's method doesn't work anymore you're not going to say that you're not going to say that you're going to say yeah i'll do that even you kind of i'm like feeling this but you know i can't disrespect this person giving advice you're you're just coming in even though you saw him work his own dog you're like oh what the hell when i was telling you hey try that okay that's usually what happens please disagree with me if that's not what happens i've seen it so many times in clubs and so many times at the police also these young guys just stand there taking it i guess we'll have to do that right that's what they think because somebody just said it and he might be in the position where he calls the shots for example or he's the oldest guy with the most expertise experience whatever might not be the best plan for you what are you going to do that's why you the home training that's where you can be yourself you can develop yourself you can be stress-free when you're in a stress-free environment that's when you thrive you can add the stress once you've got the skill once you can master the skill you can add the stress really then you can also cope with the stress and you could still do what you're good at it's about talent is also about using all the skills simultaneously when you're under pressure when you're in a stressful environment and you could still do it that also means you're talented so that's what you should be looking at is your backyard training is actually great training yeah so you know when people always think they need somebody breathing down their necks some people do but the majority does not they do best when nobody's watching so all right becky we have another question that we want to get into

yeah we have uh quite a few up there uh let's see oh thank you so somebody's saying that they trained their one-year-old in igp and it was boring god then found me and then said hey the moves and having fun and the speed and this you know it's yeah it's a fun the fun factor is something if you want a life time of memory and the skill that you've developed that skill's got to give you some satisfaction it's got to give you joy else you will not remember it for the rest of your days you will not relate to you you will not gravitate towards it the the fun factor is super important we are not training navy seals here as dog trainers we are training people that are looking for enjoyment why do you get a dog in the first place it wasn't to kill the number one terrorist it was you know for you to have more fun in your free time to have a dog with you to do fun things and then you're going to train with something that's not fun uh how does that how does that align it doesn't so yeah you should have fun you should always put that out one of the priorities that for yourself and your dog you got to have fun so go and do something that gives you satisfaction that you gravitate towards that you feel like hey this has been a fun session i'm like you know you're even sweating like i did some quite some movement there with that dog i exercise yeah it gives you great great feeling really that's when you go out again and you do it again so excuse me becky so you you had somebody that you wanted to i also just wanted to add as well just to to carry on what you were just talking about um just because movement like if you're doing a new movement and it feels awkward doesn't mean it's not going to be fun either like once you get used to movement and once you get used to doing certain things with your dog that it does become fun and it does become joyful and it does give you energy it goes back and forth between you and be the animal because you're going to see a direct reflection with your dog when you're working with them you're going to see them pick up the energy and then once you get used to you know say a certain movement or technique then the dog gains confidence in it as well by working with that so i think awkwardness doesn't always equal not fun i think awkwardness can also once practice can become part of the fun yeah i agree with that so and more awkwardness look everything that you attempt the first time always feels awkward i've never played uh what they call baseball the popular sport you put

a bat in my head look i just want to know what to do with this thing of course it's going to feel awkward but i can have fun with it if i keep doing it i'll probably become fun so anyway i highlighted a question that which i thought was really interesting because it kind of relates to the pets again and the behavior how do you stop you see and here's the emphasis on for me as i read this to stop a dog from pulling right how you stop a dog of 50 pounds of pulling that's a 50 pounds of trouble right there because what is the first goal why is he pulled because he wants to control directions maybe there is something more interesting right there is something more interesting because there's always something more interesting that's what life is there's always something more interesting when you go out with a dog than you right there's other dogs there's smells there's so many things in the world that of course he wants to go to so then he starts to pull and when he's 50 pounds he probably has a good chance of pulling you with him right so this is like a what i would call the you know the typical question how do you stop him well then let me reverse the question and ask you what have you created also what have you created have you created a dog that accepts rewards that understands when you recall him he turns his back for example does this dog know how to wait then does this dog know things does it you only know how to stop him from doing things so you also created some things that would be my first question then when he pulls well if you if you use like a harness for example and the dog leans into this you actually support that pull so you you actually tell this dog this is great you keep going and you pull and the dog pulls as well and this is fun same goes with the flat collar for example like that doesn't really get establish any communication that you don't want him to pull so how do you stop pulling well how do you even know how does he even know he has to stop who told him to stop because you so told him stop stop what you know when he goes into the harness for example and you pull that's not a stop you can say stop but that's actually to the dog well keep moving forward you see that where it starts is communication how do you stop maybe he doesn't know how to stop truly he doesn't know how to stop he's supporting him so then we can get more into technologies and becomes like you know custom advice or custom training you know because we need to talk and we need to some feedback we need to find

out did you just get this dog is he already trained like what is this is this real out all that kind of stuff right but anyways i wanted to highlight this one because i thought okay seems like a reasonable question how do you stop a dog well then well first how do you create things also the you know the balance again of things in life you can stop things but you can also get things done so uh what else we have um there's my one-year-old shepherd loves to bite any help i don't know because i'm i always every day i wake up and hope bite better harder stronger so does he bite you the missus the kids that's a different issue so uh yeah i you know these are typical new people questions that's why i highlighted it i got this dog loves to bite any help well that's good right he wants to bite bite the ball bite the wedge but not bite the kid but we don't know just uh just a question uh all right do we have a we have time for two more and then we're going to wrap this up then we got nine minutes in there's one from johnny hi johnny what can i do when the dog is easy distracted again you have to make the analysis on well what is your dog like like first of all does he have source interest and if he does well how long and what is the you know his first interest of like you want a ball is it food what is it that interests him you have to know the dog before you can help the dog or you before you can train him so assessment of a dog that you have should be your number one skill actually your assessment on what is here in front of me what am i going to do with this so when a dog is easily distracted can also be because there is a lack of interest in things that should interest him and then it becomes stopping the dog from doing this stopping a dog from doing that because you can't teach him to do something by using anything because he doesn't want anything so the question then is then why does he not want anything is it like pure genetic problem is it because he's used to getting everything for free he's not used to moving he's not used to being interactive with a handler he's not used to having fun oh there's so many reasons so many reasons that you know given a you know advice given advice to this specific question there's so many outcomes and so many reasons we have to know more but you know also i think these all go in the top 10 of most asked questions easy distracted how do you stop a dog from pulling like all these things that people suffer with but they haven't gotten down to the analysis of what they needed to do

what is in front of you and how what was your plan in the first place and what was your blueprint do you even have a blueprint if you don't how you're going to make things work this should be a you know a solid plan of what you need to do what your dog needs to do how a routine looks like a schedule look like what is it that you are going to do in the five minutes where you can have it all where you control the resources and the rewards that's the question what are you going to do you don't know what the dog's going to do is either going to eat it or bite the ball we know that kind of outcome question is what do you do all right joe are we gonna if you have joe goodwin uh what's your experience with taking a let us show the uh can you put that on show yeah for sure joe okay what's your experience with taking a a dog twin a different system initially and reducing your own you find changes in speed intensity or permanent or is there a tendency to revert back that's a very good question i love this question because inheriting what has been embedded by somebody else is not just something you can override a dog is very into pictures of what what does this mean healing is i'm walking next to a handler and then there's some kind of focus and this focus is is created by somebody else and not you so where this person has consistently rewarded the dog in this angle or at this angle or like that that's been embedded to the dog that's something that he was successful in and he will keep and keep doing or he will keep reverting to that as an example let's say your dog is super stiff he doesn't know how to move he wasn't into nino's you know movement business and he was very stiff that's going to cost you a lot of energy to get that dog to move he's not used to moving when a dog is stiff and he's not used to it he doesn't really enjoy it either in the beginning so also the bigger he is the more you also have to work harder right so you know there's there's always a combination of things going on is like what do you have to help him with what he lacks because if you're saying changes that means you don't like what it is and you want to change it you want to make it better you want to make the speed better in this case or the intensity well then you have to work with the things that create speed and intensity which is the source which is the movement how they're going to use this source if he's crazy about the ball but all he can do is latch on to it but he can't be maneuvered he can you you don't know

how to play the drive game you don't know how to actually bond with a dog with that source you see then you have to go first into how do i develop drive and then if i have that drive how do i have control over this kind of drive how do i get him out of this drive how do i even get him out of this ball you see so there's so many things that people might have done for you but you don't agree with or you you wish it was different there's ways to do it but the hardest ones are always the ones that he relates to as most common which is positions he's used to doing slow positions or sloppy positions right so these kind of body movements he relates to he's like i've seen that before i mean and he does it the way he was taught and then you inherit that and then you have to override his brain which is not that easy but it can be done it's just you know it's more fluid and fun and you know it's going to give you more satisfaction if you put in the right movement from the first time but it can be done do we have time for one more yeah sure one more we have one um with the i see that a lot with shepherds as well uh that they have a lot of handler focus so how to gain an external source so that they can focus on that rather than the handler the million dollar question the thing is that everybody had asked me how does the dog focus on the source how did you teach him i did you didn't because your dog literally gets to you when he's little and he's not focused on you right but then yeah you see the most common questions is how do you get the focus on us on us on us on us and that's what people do then is let's show you again guys got food in this hand you got food in this hand right you got you know two little hands with food and then we go hey look which one is it which one is it and it's i don't know i know and it looks at you yes and there comes the food and from there on you're going down the drain when it comes to highlights speed dynamics using the dog's natural abilities into your advantage from then on you're already built it's not about the source it's about looking at you first and you destroy everything in front of you how do you go back to that by making sure the dog gets success in actually doing this so when you get them back to move in and hug the source of interest and then if you teach him a clean out where you also don't have a physical impact on the dog and you're not in his face he can do his out like remotely from you literally that means now we can focus on his source and he doesn't need to go to you so make sure you're not in the equation make sure you're behind the

dog you're above the dog whatever so he doesn't have to start looking for you all over the place and that's how you can slowly establish back to what he was built for once you establish back to what he was built for be careful because he's going to revert to the old ways like i just mentioned really easy so if you step in the trap not being focused you're just going in not thinking you just got him you know the same reward again by looking at you and you go back to scratch very frustrating but also again a game of skill because in order for you to maneuver a ball and and just to lay it on the ground use that you know little leash so he can't touch it making sure he can out like on his own you you don't want an out like some people come here and i ask him do you have an out and then they say yeah yeah i do i said show me and then they always take the dog with them and then the dog has to out like with their hands on the dog well no the out is look he's there i'm just holding a leash for example i say out and he drops it wherever he is that is an out the out is not where you put your hands around him and then you say out out and then he goes okay then that's not an out so you don't want to be part of the odd either you can become a part of it but you don't want to be a part of it in the beginning so anyways i'm going off topic a little bit but oh thank you ernesto thank you you know somebody's having fun training all right fluid motion that's what it's in about guys so that's what i wanted to share is a story about you guys have to make the priorities yourself what do you want to do first you want to click this thing away from day one and after two weeks you know it's the marker but in in my system in two weeks he's already doing combos and if he's really good at this you know finding fun in his source you can you can you know do so many things in 10 14 days it's it's beyond your belief what a dog can do check it out on the videos what dogs can do in just 14 days does that mean you're going to get the ultimate dog in the long term long run no but you can definitely enjoy more of the things than just loading up a clicker that's for sure so all right i think it's a wrap becky thank you so much for joining today and sharing your video and experience guys thank you for joining us on this podcast there's more to come and uh let me see is there still a question that we missed oh somebody wants uh subtitles and in spanish you don't we don't have spanish subtitles live but we are going to make our classes all subtitle we have one class pop university 2.0 does have spanish subs
