어떻게 그런 교감을 이끌어내시나요? 어떻게 그렇게 속도를 높이나요? 어떻게 그렇게 즐겁게 만드나요? 어떻게 개들이 그렇게 당신과 교감하나요? 어떻게 당신과 호흡을 맞추나요? 어떻게 당신의 말을 그렇게 잘 듣나요? 그렇게 멀리서 이 모든 행동을 하고, 당신과 환경 사이에서 상호작용을 주고받나요? 당신의 손이 어디를 움직이든 시선을 유지하세요. 개는 항상 당신에게 집중해야 합니다. 누가 그걸 생각해냈을까요? 만약 그 사람을 찾을 수 있다면 왜 그런지 물어보고 싶네요. 왜 그랬을까요? 아니면 제가 대신 그 질문에 답해볼게요. 왜 그런지 작은 추측이 있거든요. 당신이 개에게 그걸 가르치려는 이유는 개가 당신에게 집중하면 다른 곳에는 집중할 수 없기 때문이죠, 맞죠? 당신에게 집중할 때 개는 당신과 더 많이 교감하고, 당신에게 집중할 때 당신의 말을 더 잘 듣게 될 겁니다. 그들이 아마 당신에게 하려는 말은 그런 것일 겁니다. 하지만 이제 강아지의 입장에서 이야기해 봅시다. 강아지는 손에 있는 것을 원합니다. 그래서 당연히 손을 쳐다보죠. 원천을 보는 거예요. 강아지를 끌어당기는 것을 보는 거죠. 하지만 손이 여기저기 움직이면 강아지는 혼란스러워합니다. 도대체 무엇을 봐야 할까요? 그러다 갑자기 아주 잠깐 강아지가 당신을 쳐다보면 당신은 그걸 마킹하고 '그래, 바로 이거야. 내가 찾던 게 이거지'라고 합니다. 하지만 당신이 생각하지 못하는 것은, 당신이 지금 강아지의 에너지를 뺏고 있다는 점입니다. 강아지는 교감하고 싶었고, 자신이 좋아하는 것을 따라가고 싶었는데 당신이 그걸 빼앗아 버린 겁니다. 당신은 강아지의 가장 자연스러운 특성을 시작부터 빼앗아 버린 셈입니다. 그뿐만이 아닙니다. 당신은 강아지가 계속 당신에게 집중하기를 바라죠. 강아지에게는 그저 이것을 바라보는 것이 전부였는데 말이죠. 왜냐하면 이것이 바로 강아지를 움직이게 하고, 에너지를 얻게 하며, 참여하게 만들고, 진정으로 타고난 모습이 되도록 이끄는 도구이기 때문입니다. 즉, 작은 존재가 되는 것이죠. 자신이 원하는 것, 그리고 소비하고 싶은 것과 상호작용하는 포식자들입니다. 이것이 바로 그들이 사랑하는 것이죠. 그런데 여러분은 그것을 빼앗아 자신에게 집중하게 만들고 싶어 합니다. 그리고 진심으로 그렇게 하면 개들이 여러분의 말을 더 잘 들을 거라고 믿죠. 아니요, 그건 오히려 개들을 더 좌절하게 만들 뿐입니다. 왜냐하면 그들은 사실 다른 무언가를 하고 싶어 하고, 다른 무언가와 상호작용하고 싶어 하며, 자신이 보고 싶어 하는 것들을 보고 싶어 하기 때문입니다. 그런데 여러분은 항상 개가 밥을 먹을 때나 공을 가지러 갈 때, 혹은 명령을 들을 때조차 항상 자신을 바라봐야 한다는 이 '눈 맞춤'이라는 상황을 강요합니다. 아니요, 개는 다른 곳을 보고 있으면서도 충분히 명령을 들을 수 있어야 합니다.
How do you get that engagement? How do you get so much speed? How do you get so much fun? How are these dogs so connected to you? How are they in sync with you? How do they listen to you so far away and do all these things and then interact with the environment with you back and forth? Maintain eye contact no matter where your hands are moving. The dog should always focus on you. Who came up with that? And if the one that did, we should be able to ask him why. Why was that? Or maybe I will fill in that question for you because I have a small suspicion on why is you want to teach that to your dog because when he focuses on you, he can't focus on anything else, right? While it was all for the puppy to look at this because this is what you will use to have them move, to have them energized, to have them involved, to have them become truly what they're destined to be, is become little predators that are engaging with what they want to have and what they want to consume. This is what they love. And you want to take that away to focus on you. And you truly believe that's going to make the dog listen to you better. No, it's going to frustrate them more because they actually want to do something else. And they want to be engaged with something else. And they want to see the things they want to look at. And you always make it about you this reference where a dog's supposed to look at you when he's eating his food, when he's going to get his ball, when he's like getting commands all the time. No, he should be able to get commands while he's looking at something else, but he's still
