But I'll get into this. First I'll read the question that this person answered or asked. Hi, my five-month-old Boston Terrier bit my mother Monday night because she wouldn't let her keep jumping on the couch. Last night I was petting the dog on the floor and she was sniffing in my pocket for treats. I didn't have any and she got frustrated and nipped at me. What's the definition of a nip to me? Definition of a nip is she got bit. I am shocked and horrified. Do you think this is a result of poor training? I've been training her since she was eight weeks old or a person or is it a personality issue? If it's training, would I be able to rectify it? I'm really the only person that trains this dog. Please help me. So Cindy wrote her back because there are some things she can do to fix this. It's not at this point without being there, without seeing this dog and knowing how the lady trains it and handles it. We can't tell you that it's going to always go away, but the odds are if she follows some of the advice we give her, they're going to fix the problem. What you're describing is pretty normal adolescent puppy behavior when a puppy isn't given enough management. management. And by management, I mean that we raise puppies here and we don't allow puppies the freedom to jump on furniture and off furniture. We never allow that. And this puppy shouldn't be allowed to do that. We try to set these puppies up for success by not getting down the floor with them either. If they are the type of puppy you have, it gets too excited and overly aroused and then that creates the problem that you had. I know many Bostons and they tend to be high drive puppies. They're energetic dogs that need to be taught how we expect them to behave in our home. And really that's the goal. Anytime you get a new dog, anytime you get a new puppy is we have to teach them how we expect them to live with us. And we do it through management training. People always have behavioral problems and this and that. And they say,

oh, I can take my dog to a six or an eight week basic obedience course. And I did that and it didn't do anything. You're right. The basic obedience doesn't teach a dog how to live in your home. It's a behavioral problem that you have. It's a management problem. You can go to an eight week obedience course and come out of it with the same behavioral problems you went into it with. So enough of that. Since these dogs are puppies, they don't have a lot of life experience or training experience to know how we expect them to live with us. She said, our puppies are on a leash all the time in our house, unless they are in the X-pen or the dog crate. And that's so truthful. So many people don't realize, okay, I've got a leash. I'm gonna take my dog for a walk. I put him on a leash, walk him. I come home, I take him off leash, let him go in the house. Why do you do that? What are you going to do with a puppy that comes in the house? Maybe that puppy didn't poop on the walk. You bring him inside. When do puppies poop? After they eat, sleep and have exercise. So you take your puppy for a walk and he pees, but he doesn't poop. But what is he doing? He's getting a lot of exercise. You bring him home, cut him loose in the house. He's going to run behind the house, behind your couch or your chair, and he's going to poop on the floor and come back out. And it only takes seconds to do that. We keep our puppies on leash 100% of the time. And usually for many, many, many months. There's no reason for a puppy to run around in your house. We want them to learn to come in and lay down. We don't do a lot of playing with our puppies in the house. We don't get down on the floor with them. Play happens outside, okay? In the house, if you have an energetic wild puppy and you get down on the floor, you're just asking for some kind of a behavioral problem to pop up. Puppy jumps on you, bites you. Puppies have sharp little teeth. If you've seen teeth on puppies, and I bred German shepherds for 35 years, those baby teeth are sharp little needles. And they have those teeth until they shed them at about four or five months old when they lose their baby teeth. So if you have them on leash, you can block them from jumping up on the couch or sneaking into another room. It says we have a lot of content on our website about how to manage puppies. And you're, you have a resource here of people who have been training dogs for, you know, I'm 75 years old, and it's all I've ever done for my whole life. We try and help people with what they have. Cindy goes on, we always have a multi-dog household with the range of breeds varying from German shepherds to Malawas to terriers to cattle dogs, shih tzus, and we, we recently added a chihuahua. We're down to a four house doghouse environment. We have Artie, who's a German shepherd, working line German shepherd. We have Stella, a border terrier who's pushing 13 right now. Love her. I have my shih tzu, Rosie. She's eight. And Pip is the chihuahua. She's a little over a year old. She's crazy, crazy, wild little puppy. I love her. And she is fast as grease, grease lightning. We don't let her run around loose at our house. It would be an accident waiting to happen. And even when we take her outside and we have 45 acres with horses and it's fenced, we don't let her loose out there too. We couldn't catch her if we wanted to catch her. So, what we would recommend is for people to take a look at some of the resources that we make available. Some that we sell and a lot that we give away on our website.
