Dog Reactivity Success Story: What Actually Worked

I get emails every day where people saying my dog doesn't listen. What do you mean he doesn't listen? What is he supposed to listen at? Well, my commands. Well, your commands based on what? The dog 6 months old. What what commands could he possibly do? Command. I command I tell you what to do and I have to do it now because I told you to do it. It doesn't work like that. A dog wants to do things and at 6 months they never want to do what you want to do. I never met a dog at 6 months I want to do everything that I want to do unless I create the environment where he feels like well, now I want to do this. Well, this happens to be the thing that I want to you to do also. You see? Now you created you manipulated a predator into what they thought they wanted also served you. That's how you combat reactivity. Remember your list, your A list of problems, weaknesses all over the place. What are the strengths? What are the strengths? Which brings me to one of our students, MVP students. Let's see her video. We have her video on two reactive she had the luck the sheer luck to have two reactive dogs at the same time. How about that? GSD reactive and I think it was an Australian Shepherd also also reactive. So you have two for the price of one at the same time. Here you go. So let's see that video. >> No. No. >> [music] >> All right. So and we happen to have Tia here today. So and I want to get her on live in just a second because we need to talk about this. Because for most people this first scene is very familiar. That means I'm going out with my dog. He's like he wants to go towards that dog and you say no and you try to pull away and the dog is like, "No, no, no. I'm choosing directions. I'm going that way. That's where the action is. I need to put my energy into that dog." So, you turn the tables here, not just with one, with two dogs. Uh Tia, why don't you join us here and we can talk about this a little bit because it is important for people to see or understand maybe what you have been through. Can you add her to the stage? Okay, here we are. Hello Tia and welcome. >> Thank you. Hello. Good to be here. >> Yes, thank you. Thank you for joining us. So, we want to talk about this a little bit because this is like uh what we would call a a cut scene from, you know, YouTube basically is okay, this is the before. Now, how did you get to the after? This this all looks like great, but there what happened in the middle? That's what we need to understand because first of all, Tia, I understand that you did not have any background of dog training. It's actually I think your husband who who actually had the great

idea to have two dogs or one dog. Uh and now you they happen to be reactive, of course. Now, can you tell us a little bit about the journey here? Uh how did you end up from one place to another where the dog is now choosing, not not by command, but choosing themselves to just say, "You know what? Maybe healing is more fun than killing another dog." How do you get to that point? >> Absolutely. Actually, before I I share my story, I just wanted to say something real quick. I'm not a trainer and uh I'm just happen to be a dog owner whose dogs uh used to be extremely reactive. Most likely, just like many people uh who are here on this webinar, I was frustrated and I was looking for answers. I never thought I'd be in a position to talk about this from the other side. I'm very honored to be here. When I joined uh MVP, my goal was, you know, to help my dogs. I didn't realize how much it would actually change the way I look at them now. Uh before MVP, I was focused on everything my dogs couldn't do. They couldn't stay calm outside. It was actually impossible to take them for a walk outside. Anything could set them off. You know, people, bikes, cars, and I'm not talking about dogs. That's a whole different story. So, they were crazy reactive, but at home, you know, they were sweet dogs. But once we stepped outside, it was a different story. They would completely check out and it was impossible to switch them back to me. So, I kept thinking, you know, there's something I'm missing. Our relationship was missing something. At home, everything is good. Outside, I was nonexistent. One of the biggest breakthrough moments for me was when you, you know, you talked about working with dog strengths instead of only trying to fix their weaknesses. That was a huge mindset shift for me. I realized I was coming to every training session with the intention to fix them, address whatever the problem I was having with them. I was trying to fix their reactivity, the pulling. And the thing is, my dogs are not only reactive, they're also extremely low drive. So, it happened many times after I joined the MVP program, they would walk away from the training session. They didn't want to take food from my hand. They didn't want to lure or anything like that. So, I had to really build it up. Just like I said, it's that mind shift mindset shift when I started focusing on their strengths instead of just saying, "Oh, I need to fix this problem, fix that problem." So, that change change everything for me. >> That is an extremely interesting point you're making here because you were down on two sides. Which, first of all, is you have two dogs now simultaneously

checking out as soon as you open the door, you don't exist anymore. I mean, that is a feeling that we get a lot of people asking us these same questions. Dog completely checks out. But on top of that, remember the whole great story I was talking about countering with you know, value and and and the dogs assets they have for food or any prey. I remember on your porch because that's where you showed us those videos first you submitted your first videos. They were completely checking out. So they had no drive. They had no interest in nothing. Now you're combating two reactive dogs in a real world and and basically you have nothing to counter. So, can you give us a little time frame because I want people to be realistic here because this is beautiful before and after but what was the time frame approximately of having this desperation of well, my dog does not have any interest towards now your dog is choosing to align with you you healing and there's another clip with your dog healing also beautiful. They're all off leash. They wait at the end of the street until they come into contact. I mean street heel. It's it's beautiful. What was the time frame to you? >> Well, it depends. It was a lot of up and downs. So maybe first change happened around at 3 months mark after after into the program. But my German Shepherd is a female. So she was going through a lot of hormonal issues herself. So I went through a lot of ups and downs with her. And at some point she just you know how German Shepherd loves their balls. She she wouldn't touch it at some point because my approach just like I said, I was coming into the training session. Let's fix something instead of saying let's have fun. Let's bring out the best in you. So when I changed that approach, she changed. Even though she was going through a lot of hormonal issues and reactivity herself, she changed. And also um she started becoming reactive towards my other dog my Australian Shepherd. So she was actually building up to be this crazy dog and I'm so happy I caught that video you talked about strength versus weaknesses. This is what changed everything everything for us. When I did that, I started building strength inside the house. Same like Vanina, I worked with vacuum cleaners. >> Yeah. >> My kids have remote cars, you know, remote control cars. She was terrified of everything. So, she was just fearful. And I needed to build up her so we could be outside and tackle the outside triggers. >> Yeah. So, we happen to you know, had the honor to follow your entire journey. You on the community you posted a lot of your videos at the porch. And that we really saw it all coming together and

and you graduated in this program, which is you actually initially started as a standard for working dogs. And there you are with two reactive low drive dogs graduating in the MVP, which shows that the potential of these dogs it doesn't even show on the surface. There was not even something to hold on to where you went like, well, this is great because Vanina literally has some some drive. The dog is interesting. You did not have this. So, that's why I invited you because you're the underdog of underdogs when it came to Oh, well, well, of course your dog had some natural interest in something else, right? Because if you show it with RJ, RJ is a dog that is interested um you know, by by default in things that move and and things that he can consume where your dogs were not. That's why it's an incredible journey. So, um anything else you want to share because you already mentioned like the ups and downs, of course. And this What was the hardest challenge for you? Was it mentally the fact that it was going up and down? Was it the fact that I already said on the MVP multiple times, this is not a 1-2 week. This is a 3-6-9 month journey, basically. It What was the hardest for you to mentally to overcome this not seeing immediate results in 1-2 weeks? >> Yeah, absolutely. So, um I realized, you know, we all have Okay, before I get into it, I want to say something. On the What I love about the MVP and the community, there's so many different people joining with different goals, different aspirations, different uh breeds of dogs, you know, different ages and everything. But, what I love is that MVP equips you with with skills. My goal was to walk calmly outside, to be able to go for a walk. And that was impossible. But, when I tried to do that, I realized I was actually on step let's say 15 on development, right? So, I had skipped everything I needed to do, and I was demanding my dogs to walk nicely outside. So, what I love about MVP is that it gives you layer by layer how you need to build up the dog for dog eventually to be calm outside. Because here's the thing, the trigger and the reactivity, it's all has to do with their uh energy and arousal. So, for me it was extremely counterintuitive, right? Not counterintuitive, but it was like extreme opposite. I couldn't understand in the in the beginning. My dogs are low drive, has have no drive to training, but they're exploding at the triggers. So, that means they actually do have drive. I just needed to channel it, and this is what MVP helped me to channel, to understand, to build that drive, and bring the value in me, build the value up in me, so they can actually have the

reference and start trusting the world and start seeing the world through me. So, that was the thing that many people skip to step 15, and they don't realize you need to build them up layer by layer, step by step. Then, eventually you'll have a nice calm dog. >> Yeah, I think the the recipe itself here is is not like a magic, you know, spell. It's It's There's nothing spectacular about it if you look at at the day-to-day journey. It is spectacular now in the before and after because the development is skipped, you know, nobody sees the development. Nobody hears the voice of the person that is in desperation and says, "Hey, I don't know what's going on here, but this doesn't feel right that you know, my dog is not interested in anything and explodes on any trigger outside." And the reason I wanted to do this also is because the amount of emails we get of people in desperation because that's when they reach out. We got to be honest, people reach out when they feel like I am stuck here or this is not moving forward. And what do we do? We had the most uh subscriptions ever on this webinar, over 2,000 people wanted to join this live. Uh why? Because it is a genuine problem for a lot of people. And people only look at how can I fix this today? And this is the wrong webinar, the wrong class to be in because this is starting with you. If you cannot be the provider of those skills like you have developed yourself, Tia. In the beginning, we didn't even look at what the dog was doing exactly. We looked at what are you actually doing, Tia, with your food and with your handling skills and with your leash. What are you What are you doing with this stuff? Because it's one thing to get stuff and buy stuff, it's a whole other thing to actually use them with intention and with some finesse. And that's what we're missing in a lot of cases. So, um anyways, I'm very happy you were able to speak here today and to maybe inspire some people to get some work done. Anyways, um is there anything else you want to share before you leave? >> Yeah, I just wanted um just to share a little analogy what MVP is like for me. The way I see it, think of it I'm I'm talking to the viewers here. Think of it, it's uh like a canvas, right? And MVP gives you the brushes and paint and the coaching shows you how to use them. And the community Oh, the community plays a huge role, which is we have an incredible community that supports each other, especially people with reactivity. You know, you feel lonely sometimes. Struggle so MVP community keeps you going. So, but you know what? You still get to paint your own picture with your dog and I find it it's beautiful.

No matter what dog you have, you are given the skills, you get equipped with skills and strategy and plan and you get to paint it the way you want it. It's like in the poem, you know, Invictus. How does it go? I'm the master of my fate, I'm the captain of my soul. >> Wow, philosopher. Philosopher, yeah. >> [laughter] >> Interesting. So, yeah, yeah, thank you. Thank you for sharing that. I appreciate it. So, Tia, good luck to you and your dog. So, more about you. We'll also link your Instagram if they want to follow you, see what you're about to do next now because now you have all the skills. So, what are you going to do next, right? You you got what you wanted. So, all right. So, anyways, thank you, Tia. >> Thank you for having me. >> You're welcome.
